You know its really unbelievable how well this team is playing even with freshman mistakes which almost go unnoticed to the average fan but not with Geno and CD. I attribute the improved play, cohesiveness, and team chemistry to a few things.
The reason for the unbelievable stats has been brought about by belief. Buying into the team concept and believing in the execution. Truly when you watch the teams passing and cutting and look especially at the team assists you understand this is not a team led by one person or by one on one plays. There are alot of kids on this team that can make plays. Yes this team has unbelievable talent so do alot of other teams. But this team is all about the team. Individual stats are a direct result of the cohesivness of the team, the team chemistry, confidence and belief in what theyre doing. All the talk about blow outs. I enjoy watching this team execute and make plays. I dont care if its a blow out I enjoy watching them do what they do because theyre so good at doing it. As someone said Uconn make good teams look bad. That is a direct result of each players mind set and wanting to hustle for loose balls, and rebounds and getting back on fast breaks. Every one of them do it not just a couple. Theyre all on the same page.
All the talk this season has been about the incoming freshman and what a great and talented class they are. There is also alot of talk about the development and improvement of players like BB, Stef, Kiah and KML. Caroline looks great coming back from her injury as does Bria. So what happened to make this team become so dominent?
IMO
Making a Total Commitment
So what does a total commitment mean?
I have an ole saying. To become Great at anything you do .
First you must make a total commitment to it.
You will pay a huge price in advance and
there are no guarantees.
That means give up the way your running your life and do whatever it takes to become what you want to be. In other words you must change.
Here is something to think about that you can relate to total commitment.
How many minutes do you think BB worked to get to where she is today?
How many times do you think Stef wanted a hamburger, or chocolate and didnt eat it?
How many times do you thing Kiah got tired of rebounding and going back up for a shot?
How many times do you think KML shot the ball from one spot til it became automatic?
See this is the price these kids pay to be great. We watch the games today and think WOW look how good they are. Well when we were watching tv, or goofing off they were working and drilling themselves. Its called self disipline and commitment.
How bout this when Bria Hartley goes home she works out with her trainers and coaches that helped her get to where she is today.
These kids didnt get this good by accident. It came from hard work. Nobody gave them the talent. They worked hard and were relentless. I Cant isnt in their vocabulary. Thats what it takes to become successful. Now look at them, they make it look easy.
See today imo to many people are looking for the easy way out. To many people go through the motions and expect great results. To many people are not willing to pay the price for success, they want success handed to them, thats why lotto is so popular.
There are no short cuts to greatness.
Heres something to think about. Geno once said when asked how did he become so great. His response was " It takes 20 years to become an over nite sensation."
Some fans complain that Geno and CD get all the top players. Well they get alot of them and why is that? Because theyve built something special, that attracts recruits to them. UConn isnt like any other team. This is UConn. This is the premier team in WCBB. They have earned that respect, they werent handed it. They built it. UConn is where many of the great ones want to come. There is a standard of excellence at this program. Championships are expected, they are not a wishful expectation. Those of us who have been watching this team develop over the years are now seeing the results of Geno and CDs hard work.
Some fans, some teams and some schools are jealous that SNY has taken UConn and plastered them all over the country on national tv. I know for a fact other teams have asked for the same deal but no one will take them. Why? Because UConn attracts fans. The casual fan will watch UConn Women because of what the UConn Womens program has done and SNY makes alot of money because of it. When you think about the TV contracts you have to wonder how much money Geno and CD are really worth. LOL hint hint. LOL
So if your a high school recruit and UConn comes looking at you or perhaps UConn is in the gym looking at someone else like when UConn went looking at Stef and found Bria who scored 37 pts in a game. What do you do? Well the days of people putting down UConn saying you dont want to go to UConn because its to cold, or its a BB factory, or you'll be playing for a tuff man. That dosnt work anymore. Kids know what theyre getting into when they come here and Geno tells them right up front what he expects and there are no guarantees. That seperates those who are willing to pay the price for success and those who dont. You weed them out right away. The hardest thing to cure on a team is a bad attitude and weeding them out early is a must. Understand... winning is an attitude..unfortunately so is losing. UConn is the vehicle and Geno is the driver that can make recruits better then you ever thought they could be, and take that learning experience to a professional level and make money doing what you love to do...playing BB. Now isnt that a great way to make a living. Doing something you love to do and get paid for it.
