How big would this win be?

Tough to compare an end of year win over a storied program having a mediocre year to a second game of the season win over a middling program against which we have a winning record..

The first brought us notice on a scale we'd never seen but meant little over the long haul (as evidenced by our record the last fifteen years) while the second could help maIntain and grow recent success and serve as the needed boost to hopes of gaining admission to a conference with the media money needed to thrive long term.

honest question because i wasn't a fan back then - how "program defining" was the ND win? what did it do for us exactly? asking bc i don't want to get my hopes up that a syracuse win would really do much for us, in terms of inching closer to a P4 invite.

It won’t have the level of excitement ND did. We were desperate for a win after Jazz died and South Bend was the perfect setting. It was a magical situation.

In terms of helping right this program and showing that we are back on the level of power conference teams, it would be absolutely huge to beat Cuse. A win would give me complete confidence that we can run the table if we stay healthy and play well. It would also begin a real media boost that will last all season. It will put us on the radar as a great story in week 2. That can get us a lot of publicity over the course of fall if we keep it up.

It would be more clear evidence that the program’s trending back up. But nothing close to what UConn accomplished when they were in a power conference during Edsall 1.0. Those years are evidence of what Uconn can return to if they get back to a power conference.
This is such a big game for UConn but it doesn’t really stand out (if we win) in comparison to other big wins that we’ve had. Syracuse commentators calling this our Super Bowl but it is far from it. It’s just a really important game on our schedule.

But for Mora, for us UConn fans, I do not wish to take anything away from the importance of this game.

This is a key time for the program… are we for real… are we going to be in the national discussion as a solid football program in the top 70 teams in the country? If we are then we absolutely have to start winning games like these.

Close score - not going to do it.

No moral victories.

No excuses.

If we were to win this game, it would be huge, but Syracuse is not even in the top 50 and this would not compare to other games / mentioned in this thread.

To me the best one that I can remember is when we beat Houston and stormed the field against ranked team. If we ever wanna get back to that high note, we’ve got to win on Saturday. :)

This game will be more of a reality check for their asinine fanbase moreso than our Huskies.

If we can cause the demoralization of their football team (we know the basketball team is literal hot garbage), then the only thing they’ll have left to do in Syracuse NY between the months of Sept thru April is methamphetamines and/or heroin.

I still have pictures on my phone of my father and I rushing the field, all time UConn memory for me

When we beat Syracuse on Saturday, would this win be as program defining as the win over Notre Dame in 2009?
No.

In fact, it's not even particularly close. Beating a Notre Dame on their storied field for the first win after the tragic murder of Jazz Howard is a tough memory to beat. Beating a mediocre Syracuse in a tin can won't do it.

Not that the win isn't an important statement for the program, but it is just another incremental step towards relevancy.

The first thing is that we had a very very good team that season and we got derailed in a tragic way.

I wasn’t at the game. But I remember watching on TV with friends who were neutrals at the start but were solidly in our corner at the end.

It felt like we had to beat two teams: Notre Dame and the officials. The calls just felt unfair but I can’t remember if they actually were or not.

This was the year we lost Jasper Howard. There were several gut wrenching losses against Rutgers and WVU following his death. The Rutgers player that scored the winning TD was Jasper’s friend and he dedicated the TD to him (argghhhh!!!!). So the win was a bit cathartic and made those losses seem a little less painful.

Notre Dame did some sort of pregame thing to honor Jasper and as far as I could tell they wed very classy about the loss.

It seems like the win should have been more defining and something we could have built on. I am sure Rutgers PR could have found a way but Notre Dame was kind of pathetic at the time and Charlie Weis was on his way out.

We should have checked our egos at the door and signed up for that series that Notre Dame wanted to have with us. That relationship might have been helpful.

Assuming a win over Cuse this Saturday and/or BC later this season, I think the Duke game/win could rival the ND win. At home, multiple P4 wins, likely setting up a double digit win season, would have the optics for a real jumping off point and a declaration of being firmly competitive. As always, what comes after matters just as much as the game result.

The biggest piece of the ND win was that it was the first win since the passing of Jasper Howard after three heartbreaking loses including on the road at no. 4 Cincy, and a walk off kick return vs Rutgers after we took a lead with seconds remaining. First of 4 straight wins to salvage the season.

I imagine that there will be far more ands than ors.

I don’t think so.

A Duke win would be big, but the Notre Dame game was on national TV.

That is fair, but a 3:30 window could be a slot where the slate is not packed and neutrals are looking for a game and CBSSN is on enough streamers/cable boxes.
