Houston Chronicle exclusive: Texas, Oklahoma reach out to SEC about joining conference.

Marquee match ups will have more value in a streaming universe....

People watch games between "big" teams....Oklahoma-Bama...Texas-LSU....adds more must watch football to the SEC...

Today in the ACC Kickoff meetings, the Commissioner addressed that...

"Football must be No. 1 priority for us ... for all of us." Says they want 24/7 and 365 mindset when it comes to football. "We're just getting started." Says that will not diminish investment in other sports. But will have a "renewed commitment and emphasis" to football."

True, but fans will also buy streaming access to their schools. SEC just made a power grab to pick up a bunch of them.

If this is the mindset on main football focus for a basketball conference like the ACC, it's easy to see why a Big 12 school like Kansas will be left out in the cold. Just like our bball didn't do anything for us in realignment, theirs won't do anything for them either. They will get stuck with the rest of the dregs. Right now Kansas, OSU, and probably Baylor are scrambling to find a home. They know their livelihood is on the line and they need to convince someone that they are worth it. The other schools are doing the same but those three are the ones with the most to lose IMO.

The real question is will the conference that remains after Texas and Oklahoma leave remain a power conference and I think not.
I think this simple movement could result in about 100 schools being in a different conference in 5 years.

They wouldn't merge, the Big 12 would just poach the best teams from the AAC. If the Big12 then expanded by 6 or 8 would UCONN get an offer? and would they accept?

Hopefully if the SEC decided to go to 16, all of the Power conferences would go to 16.
UConn has to tread lighlty in such a scenario. Leave the Big East for potential B12 that may evaporate like the old BE Football conference? Don't think the BE would take us back a 3rd time

They would. LOL but I don't think we are going anywhere.

The beauty of a conference is that the TV value is more than just the sum of its parts.....fans from other schools in a conference will tune in to watch their conference mates/foes.

For the record, we never left the BE. We left it's successor the American to move to the NBE.

I imagine that there will be few millionaires playing on SEC teams....or at least players getting decent money...

and since FOX would be controlling who gets added to the Big12 its doubtful the BIG 12 would add UCONN as Fox wouldn't want to hurt the Big East.

Which raises the question would FOX want to add UCONN to the Big12 as a football only member? They wouldn't need to pay us much.

TV values appear to be taking a precipitous drop. I think that logic applies equally well to digital streams though. If you pay to watch your team, you'll take advantage of other competitive or interesting games.

But would support a UConn to the Big 12 football only as way to cost effectively prop up that product? Maybe link it to a BE KU OOC scheduling deal to keep KU happy where it is?

Pop quiz: If the BTN+ network charged $5/mo for access and over 50% of UConn BB/FB games were on it, how many CT households would subscribe? 400K?

UCF has to go to BIG 12.
Agreed. Big 12 would have to immediately take Houston, Cincy, and UCF. Maybe flirt with BYU, USF, or us. The Big 12 schools have money and a decent media footprint. They aren't just going to quietly fade into bolivian....That said, future tv contract might not be very good.

As others have noted, the purpose of the P5 was to play magical chairs and reduce to a P4.

BIG 12 was always weakest conference.

If the other P5 conferences can kill it, they will.

Best chance for survival is if Oklahoma state government makes a hard play for OU and OSU as a both or nothing.
