Hines visiting tomorrow!!!

A realistic portal haul would be Hines, Freeman, and adequate backups at pg and center. And both may be multi year guys to help with continuity since we’ll be losing so much after next season.
This is what I’m hoping for and we’d be lucky if it shakes out

He’s probably more explosive but his offensive skill is not close to where Reed was this season (yet). He’ll be a drop-off from Reed overall but Reed was also an elite two-way big this season so that’s hard to match.
I think if we get Freeman or another scoring PF the staff is fine with a drop off in scoring from the Center position. You really can't compare Sr. Reed to Fr. Hines in scoring as obviously one had 4 years compared to 1. I expect Hines to continue to improve there as he did show some moves down low and is agile for his weight just like Tarris. The big thing we want from the Center position is rebounding and rim protection. 2 things Reibe didn't really do well at a high clip like Hines.

Ideally - getting him to lose about 10-15lbs would be ideal. I would want him at 6'10/6'11 and around 250. Then lean that down and tone. IF he could reach that weight i think it would make his footwork so much better and quicker. His game reminds me so much of Greg Monroe stylistically. He is very fluid for a guy that big. He does not have the perimeter game Monroe had, but he does not necessarily need it for what UCONN needs.

A Hines/McKeever center would be a dream, but I'd assume McKeever is searching for a starting gig.

If Reibe doesn't come back, a defensive-minded center like Yale's Samson Aletan or Charleston's Chol Machot would be a nice fit. Both guys are super switchable on defense and are excellent shot-blockers. He's skinny, but Machot has some stretch to his game too.

Another idea, replace Reibe as the backup center with another German, BU's Ben Defty. The seven-footer ranks as the team's best defender and finished his sophomore season averaging 15p, 7r and a pair of assists and blocks apiece. He's another guy who could earn a starting job, though.

What better realistic option would you rather have? And don't say Reibe....he made his decision and that ship has sailed.

He might be the best option we have, it doesn't make him a great player. People need to be realistic about that this kid can do.

Imagine our shooters are pretty pumped about Hines setting some picks/screens as they're running our motion offense. Big difference between an athletic big- with a football brain- setting screens who is okay with physicality.

I do not like a foul prone player burning his fouls on ball screens. The guards need to be really careful here, especially when reversing on the screen.

Listen, with the expected lineup we have coming back at guard and SF, what we really need out of our C is the ability to play defense, rebound, and set screens (especially with our expected lineup). Any offense the C gives is gravy. If we could just get Jake Voskhul 2.0, with the screen setting, rebounding, and solid D...we will be a terror for any team to play against next year.

Voskhul was an NBA player. I am pretty sure everyone would take Voskhul 2.0.

It’s a different era but Hines had a similar freshman season to Jake’s. Voskhul was a solid anchor which I would expect Najai to be also. BTW I doubt anyone believed freshman Voskhul was going to be a pro.

Momcilovic will be in the NBA next season. Massamba Diop or Donnie Freeman would be perfect. Either one of them would give us the size, athleticism and be a compliment to Hines if we lock him down. Diop is more forward than center despite his height.

AK's skillset and intangibles really can't be replaced. I think Hurley will go bigger and more athletic at power forward instead of trying to find a watered down AK clone.
Bigger at PF doesn't work in our system. Our 4 has to be able to pass and shoot or the offense bogs down. Hurley isn't going back to the Whaley/Sanogo type lineups (though Whaley, to his credit, could shoot a little by the end).

Voskhul was so effective as a passer in the offense, and insanely strong. That said, his early stats were modest. So are the stats of all the guys that never develop into anything more than a backup.

I like Hines, I don’t love Hines. I can live with it if he is the best we can get, but you would think he was the second coming of Hakeem reading this thread.

Strongly disagree that a bigger PF doesn't work in our system.

If your point is Hurley wouldn't recruit Whaley to be our starting power forward, no duh. Whaley was a nobody recruit and had no offense.

The reality we fans live in with NIL and college athletics has me watching every opponent during UConn games and thinking whether or not they'd be a good portal fit.

Hines checked off most of the boxes in spades. I liked his physicality around the rim and his springiness getting off the floor.

Even if UConn gets him, they still need a high level skilled four and another 5. Getting Hines is a piece of the puzzle, and I'd be very happy with that piece.

Pretty sure Hurley wants to continue to play 4 out & 1 big man down low- meaning he’s going to want his 4 man to be able to shoot threes & spread the floor- he has already said a dozen times when Karaban hit Gampel the Huskies entire offensive system changed.

The best coaches adapt to what their players do best.

A search for the new Karaban may be desired, but it could also end up with a lot of wasted time and effort.

Voskhul would be prized for his pick setting skills within the current offense.

Who's a comp for what you're looking for in a bigger PF? Samson Johnson? Charlie Villanueva?
