President Herbst and Warde Manuel will appear on John Dankosky's Where We Live show on WNPR, today at 9 am.

The station may be found at 90.5 MHz FM or online here:

http://www.cpbn.org/program/where-we-live

It looks like podcasts of their appearance will be made available later (at that site), as well.

Atleast someone other than Joe "monitoring is really all we can do" D will be interviewing. Perhaps 1 tough question will be asked. Thanks for posting the heads up

Herbst made a point to describe UCONN as a "research" university.

This is one of those 'be careful what you wish for' moments.

Some of you have built up an elaborate fantasy where strings are being pulled by different conferences and schools and that UConn has received winks and nods and you want some interviewer to pull that out of Herbst.

And when she or Warde answer the questions with as much tact as they can, you get miffed and make snide comments about 'monitoring'.

If either one were to come out and bluntly state the truth, it would explode whatever fantasy you're subscribing to as a coping mechanism and it would ruin your Christmas.

My advice - don't listen. Read the 'Big1G' thread instead - it's more of what you're looking for.

Advanced notice on bball schools leaving...inevitable bc of tension...discussed by president prior to try and make it work...talks to commissioner ofter...it is undeniable who is controlling our conference realignment

SH - the C7 leaving was less of a shock to us (administrators than it was to fans / general public)... they knew it was coming, inevitable but they'll be missed.... been tension between football and bball.

Presidents are optimistic, forward-looking, they don't sit around and moan but move the instutution forward.

I voted for all the institutions... Temple good for UConn academically, regionally...

I'm not in any kind of panic, I'm excited. Hard to lose the geographic proximity... it's great to be in Dallas, Houston, Orlando, for academics, CT losing population.

And on that note...........Herbst is very pleased with every new member recently added.

Herbst:

-Had advanced indications of the departure of the C7
-Historical inevitability of the split
-Unanimous vote on every school added
-Looking forward to building the league and take new members soon.
-This is shaping up to be a PR support for a national conference.

About the C7 leaving....Herbst's reaction:
Less of a shock for them.
Had advance notice.
Historical inevitability given the tension between FB and BB.
Presidents don't moan about the past.
Very pleased with the new members. Powerful and compelling institutions.
Not panicking.
Building a greater research university.
Increadibly aspirational in sports

National conference...Warde's reaction:
Not tied to geographic location and proximity
Losing rivalries and takes time to build new ones

Dankosky - why can we be aspirational for the institution, but when we talk about athletics, we throw up our hands and say "that's the way it is"?

SH - we are aspiration in athletics, mentions hockey east. Mentions KO saying he wants his kids to be leaders. Want to #win...

Dankosky - openings came up in the ACC, seems UConn was lobbying, didn't get in. More teams leaving your conference. Direction of college sports going towards profits.

WM - to support financial aspect, you have to have resources. Wants athletics to be self sufficient... doesn't take away from aspirations to be #winning... championship caliber.

Dankosky - revenue will go down

SH - working on media contract. No one university controls the landscape, for sports or research funding (i.e. NIH, stem cell funding)

Herbst accusing the host of setting up a strawman. This is getting good, but what the heck are they supposed to say here?
