Hawkins Starting

Shoot until coach tells you to stop shooting. The Pelicans were really bad at three point shooting, that’s probably at least 75% of the reason they drafted Hawkins. And their best shooter is injured along with 2 starters

The minutes are there and shots are available. Shoot until you’re told otherwise!

After five games Hawkings is averaging 25 minutes a game. He is shooting 31% from the field and 27% from the arc. He is getting plenty of open looks.

I've seen some of his play. His overall game is pretty good. He is an average to plus defender. He has pulled down 16 rebounds and has 9 assists in the five games. He has turned it over 4 times in five games with a 2.3 assist to TO ratio which is a good number for a guard.

Hopefully as he settles in the shooting will move up.

His defense was pretty good last night, but the Pistons didn't really put much pressure on him, to be fair. They had him playing both man and also on top of a 2/3 zone at times.

Hawk has played three games off the bench now:

Games 1, 2, 6 and is shooting 8-16 from three, 1-4 from two.

As a starter:

Games 3, 4, 5 and is shooting 5 - 25 from three, 6-14 from two.

It is possible there is more to it but it appears either he is better defended when he starts, he plays better off of Ingram (he's taking his position as a starter), or he is asked to do too much with too many minutes as a starter.

Hawkins shot 4-8 from three tonight. The rest of the team shot 4-23. This is why they desperately needed to draft him (and why they desperately need Trey Murphy back)

He’s in a great position as a rookie where he fills an immediate need and has plenty of minutes to prove it.

Need more shooting performances like tonight

It could also be that random stuff happens in 6 game samples. I’m happy he has a bounceback game tonight.

Sure, thus why I said it could be more to it.

He is looking more confident the more he plays. Love that Uconn rebounding guard trait and trying to lead transition if possible.

Didn’t see this game, but in a prior game all I noticed (besides Jordan missing a lot of open 3s that you have to think will start falling with his stroke) is how lazy Zion is, especially on D. But even on offense he does nothing if he doesn’t have the ball. If a loose ball is more than 6 feet away from him he doesn’t even think about going after it. Just watches.

They teach that at Dook.

He needs to lose 40 lbs

I would like to know if Hawk is shooting worse later in games. That tells me he will get better as he gains game fitness.

I dont think so. I havent tracked it officially, but it seems like he spreads out his makes throughout the game.
Also, he seems to shoot so much better when he has a defender draped all over him.

I’m not sure how soon shooting splits become meaningful, and I suspect it takes a lot more than six games, but he is in fact shooting much better in the first half than the second half.

First half
2-pt: 2-7 (29%)
3-pt: 10-23 (43%)
Overall: 12-30 (40%)
EFG%: 57%

Second half
2-pt: 5-11 (45%)
3-pt: 38 (17%)
Overall: 8-29 (28%)
EFG%: 33%

I wouldn’t put too much into it now, but it is probably worth watching for any rookie who is playing a lot of minutes early on.
