Harper vs Lawson.

Yo Vols! Y’all really should’ve gone after Lawson in a big way. Duke is out recruiting you and ending up in a lot of players top list. Imagine the pull with your storied program and Karas notoriety.
Ha the pot shall be kept stirred, huh?

i think the Tenn athletic department shot itself in the foot..... First Pat handed off the whistle to Holly and one could tell immediately, even the year where she filled in for Pat..... that she was not HC material.... terrible coach.... yet Fullmer kept her in that spot for 7 years.... how can a top flight program surrender to mediocrity like that.... shameful IMHO...holly got the recruits she just was not a leader..... and didnt command respect..... Lawson chose not to entertain the idea of becoming coach... though she is loyal to the Lady Vols and Pats memory.... I think the Duke job came up and it was too good an opportunity to pass on.... as for Kelly.... well she is better than Holly of course.... but Tenn is in danger of becoming irrelevant.... no Final Fours in the last 13 years and counting.... and now in conference there is Dawn and Mulkey as well..... Notre Dame football hasnt won a national title since 1988, but at least they are in the mix every year..... they are competitive and thus relevant.... as for the LVs you dont see them win the games they are supposed to win on a consistent basis..... losing 5 straight to Alabama e.g. I have contended that the most important player on WCBB team is actually the HC..... so Kelly off to a reasonable start her first couple of years..... let's see if she can push the needle forward

She has a career record of 3-1, she's really climbing the ladder. Unfortunately winless in conference play still.

A career winning percentage of .750 is pretty good in my book.

boy did this Duke team just completely fall apart in shambles. I know it's early, but Kara better get this team together next season. Always said she is a great recruiter, doesn't mean it's going going to translate into a great head coach.

Holly W. was a great recruiter, look how that turned out.

I have great belief in who we are. I have great belief in what we can be. In moments when you’re not showing what you can be, I think you continue doing things the right way and continue to compete, continue to encourage, and continue to try to be disciplined. It’s been true my whole life, so I’m going to stick with that, because it’s been true for me in a lot of situations I’ve faced. Most people in life quit before the turn. They’re not ready to endure the length of a trial, the length of a struggle, or the length of losing. They stop just before it was about to turn. The one thing we will never do in our program is stop believing, stop pushing, and stop trying to make something turn. You don’t sit back and wait for something to turn; you’ve got to go make it happen. So, that’s our job – we’ve got to try to go make something happen on Sunday and I’m excited for our group to have that opportunity.” - Duke WBB Head Coach Kara Lawson, after last night's loss to Boston College

I think next year will set the bar. It will be her first recruiting class, which is a good one! This team is mostly all transfers

Coach Lawson coming for all the naysayers.
im totally with you. she is one smart cookie. in the past years, anytime she was yakking on the tube, i listened, which makes aboot a grand total of 2 or 3 of those types.
not any kind of regular attention payer to wbb other than our squad. don't need to be since watching most of it is just a matter of 'how much do these teams stink?'
sorry, that's the way it is.
it's called the "UConn Invitational' for a good reason.
i'd rather listen to geno reading the menu from his restaurant.

on the udder hand, the men's board is all up in my grill for saying 'azzi can play for the bottom 100 in that league.'
they don't like hearing that. too bad, still true. i respect quality whenever i see it.

and, the obvious answer to the question on azzi, 'bbut what aboot the d?' is 'hide her on the top of a zone.' she got great hands and judgment. duh.

Tennessee fans: "Fahr Holly"

Duke fans: "Give Kara whatever she wants so she never leaves"

Funny thing is Tennessee fans had no idea how good they had it with recruiting when they had Holly. Kelly's recruiting has been close to disastrous. The best player to date she recruited transferred out to Vandy over the summer. Amazingly she has had success in the portal which is the only reason Tennessee won any games the past 2 seasons.

One wonders how she keeps getting good players out of the portal.

Just a guess, but Tennessee DOES have an amazing history (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth)...

She may play to that nostalgia - telling transfers they are the missing piece to help get them to the top again, etc. Heck - last season, with all the transfers in, the "experts" had Tennessee as a probably final 4 team and I think preseason were ranked 5-ish or so. The ended the season with 11 losses, altho they did make the sweet 16, falling to Va Tech.

But they had Horston, Walker, and Jackson to lead the way. This season they added a bunch of new parts from the portal, had great expectations from them, and are led by Rickea Jackson, but now she's out with an injury so... They also brought Hollingshead back, who I think was expected to anchor the post along with Key.

This year they were preseason 11/12 but now are 4-5 on the season and won't be sniffing the top 25 when the polls come out next week (they were 29/27 before the loss to MTSU). I'm sure getting Jackson back will help. They might make it back into the top 25 sooner rather than later - their next 14 games are against unranked opponents until they face SC in February, but I suspect they will lose numerous SEC games, even to teams they feel they should beat.

Funny thing is, they only lost to Florida State by 1 point. The only other losses before MTSU were against ranked teams (Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio State). AND they did beat then #22 Oklahoma by 3. But Jackson only lasted 2 games and the game after FSU was an OT win against Memphis. The wheels fell off pretty fast.

For their sake, I'm sure they want Jackson back ASAP. I'm happy to let her be out indefinitely and see them sink further once SEC play starts. BUT I suspect when Jackson comes back they will percolate back into the top 25 and at least make it to the 2nd round of the NCAA's...

The players in college today can't actually remember when Tennessee was truly a national power though, right? Last Title/Final 4 was 2008, Parker's last season. There have been a few 30 win seasons and Elite 8s since then, but it's been quite a while even for that.

No, they can't, really. But this is true across the board - RU fans were maundering about recruits not knowing Tasha Pointer or Coach Washington from their playing days, and truthfully, Arizona recruits don't remember Adia Barnes as a star college player or even being in the WNBA. And this applies to so many coaches (and even historically successful programs) out there.

So it is either "what have you done lately" or "educate them".

Clemson???
This thread definitely got bumped a year too early.

Lower Carolina owning Tobacco Road.

Best two days of Clemson basketball ever.

Yall just getting us back for what happened during the football season

Shoot me if you want to but I feel like the difference between the 2 is recruiting. Otherwise, neither has done much with the players they have

I think I'd take Lawson, but the jury is still out on both.
Lawson is a way better recruiter than Harper. I'm still not completely sold on her coaching though but thats just me. Their young talent is amazing. Provided no one transfers (you never know) next year will be pretty telling for Duke/Lawson

Harper is lovely but she seems very passive and her HS recruiting is a major problem. When TN, loses Rickea and Powell this offseason, TN will have to strike gold in the portal because if not they are in a huge hole in the near future with their recruiting issues the last couple years.
