Happy Rip vs Washington Day

We lost 2 days later and missed the Final Four. Championship or bust right?
Nah, you could tell something was brewing. Not to mention, playing UNC in Greensboro.

Keven Freeman gave it everything in that scrum too. Seem to remember him laying on the floor exhausted for a while after the celebratory pile on cleared.
If I recall correctly there was some illness making its way through the team and he just ran out of gas once the buzzer sounded.

I was in attendance at this game, just a middle schooler at the time. It is still one of the greatest moments of my life, and I try not to think too much about what happened two days later. The main thing I remember is a 360 Vince Carter fastbreak dunk.

We were right in it w UNC for most of that game, just ran out of gas. Didn't help it was yet another away Elite 8 game for us. At the time you really had to wonder if it was ever gonna happen.....of course, it only took a year to find out!!

I've mentioned this before - but one of the UW players from that game worked at the W in Westwood where I stayed for years when in LA on business. Every time I rolled up wearing UCONN gear he would just shake his head and laugh - like "why you gotta keep torturing me"...

Correct. To UNC like 25 miles from the UNC campus. A neutral site with Carolina blue towels on the chairs.

Also underappreciated that it's the best kind of buzzer beater -- losing to winning in a blink. Kemba's shot, much as I love it, if he misses we're in overtime. Still have a chance.
Rip doesn't hit this, we're going home.

Nice soft shot by Jake, just didn't fall. The relentless rebounding is insane. Washington was never getting the ball, basket or buzzer no matter how much time was left. Looks like Freeman also had a tip.

I hated UNC ever since. Permanent list. That dunk is still seared in my mind. F them.

Sure. To UNC with Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison, who would go 4 and 5 in the draft a few months later, in Greensboro, NC - a mere 55 mile drive from the UNC campus

I was recording this on a VCR in my dorm room while I was in the library banging out a paper at the last minute. I can still remember the name of the kid who said "Well, you're gonna have a good night" when I ran into him on the way home.

Nah, I was in Greensboro for both games with lots of UNC fans and they were VERY grateful that the elite 8 game was in Carolina even with two future NBA all-stars on their team in Antawn Jamison and Carter.

It took a loaded team and home court advantage to keep the Huskies out of the final four, so strong & ultimately correct feeling that it was now WHEN not IF.

If I remember correctly, late in the game there was a Rip corner three in the air that would have tied it or put us up.

That I think UNC rebounded for a fastbreak dunk.
