Some posts in the Diana thread and in another Guard Corps thread got me thinking about this.

Next season we lose arguably the best guard in D1. But we pick up a promising guard from Serbia and may have a big guard returning from injury. And we’re still waiting on one last potential commit. This leaves us with a guard corps that could look like this:
  • Seniors — KK Ash
  • Juniors — Kayleigh Allie Morgan
  • sophomores — Kelis
  • Freshman — Jovana
Of course it’s possible Geno will secure one more. If things develop as I hope, we’ll have a pair of decisive PGs in KK and Kayleigh, a trio of perimeter shooters in Ash Allie and Jovana, and the foundation of another tremendous defense.

Have I missed anything?

We might see a big lineup from time to time that could possibly include Blanca at the two and Sarah, Big O and Jana up front.

Try getting a rebound against that group.
This would be fun to watch and likely will see some minutes but based on Geno's past strategies, highly unlikely to be a major part of Geno's strategy. Even when UConn had future pros Stokes and Stewart, they rarely played together. With the current team, while Blanca has the quickness to play the 3rd guard position, she also has the strength to compliment Strong inside. Since the begining of the National Championships, Geno has liked the small lineup approach (see 2002-some say best college team ever with Geno quoted many times how he liked the iterchangeable player lineup). Now with Blanca and Morgan, he continues to have the talent to maintain this style.

Hopefully, by that time, we'll have two other guards who are both decisive and perimeter shooters in Kelis and Morgan.

It would certainly be nice to have another shooting guard to bring it up to 8 guards for insurance.

I opined in the other thread that I think we have the best guard corps in WCBB this year. I don't see a hellalotta dropoff next year, and probably some improvement in the front court with Vukosa coming, and improvement in Jana and Ayanna and possibly Ice if she's returning. Plus it's still possible for Sarah to improve (sounds impossible but it's not), and Blanca will undoubtedly improve, and Morgan should be available, so solid at wing.

My thought is if we are gonna be pressing and playing suffocating defense we need alot of guards who are interchangeable to cover us in case of foul trouble. I am hoping that Jovana will become a scorer much like Blanca has. Next season we have the bigs down low. Sarah and Blanca along with Jana Olivia Yana and Ice. We are going to be very tuff down low.

With this line up yo may as well put Morgan in as PG. At 6'2" wouldn't that make her the shortest ?

I’m very curious about Morgan at PG. she has the skills. It may not be the best use of her talents, but I think she could make it work. In high school, she engineered a victory over a LuHi team that featured Kayleigh Syla Swords and Kate Koval.

She is very hard to think of with a specific position, being a possibility at 1-4. There probably are specific players that might be ahead of her at all of those positions, and yet having versatile skills and able to play so many positions helps her chances of making the rotation somewhere, and if not, be a good insurance policy and glue option in case of injury everywhere except for the 5.

I think of Morgan as a bigger Evina Westbrook. One of those Swiss Army knife type players, but with more size. Good handles, decent outside shot, scrappy, and willing to leave it all on the floor defensively.

That lineup would be lots of fun, if only for two minutes in a blowout.

There is always the " portal" wild card. WE have been pretty successful there lately.

Okeke could close that "wildcard" option, completing the over-seas selection from Spain, as our favorite USF coach (Jose) is slated to coach PB in Dallas. Someone needs to gain the EU talent, might as well be Geno.

Go Huskies!!!

I can’t wait to see Morgan back! She’s the “Bee’s Knees” as far as I’m concerned!

I got to be honest with you, Cuango...I never heard the expression, "Bees Knees". I had to plug it into AI to find out what it meant, and I am with you on this one... I, too, am looking forward to seeing Morgan come back.

I think Harmon of Texas might disagree with who is the best guard in D1

We don’t know much about Morgan and Jovana yet but presumably they will be just fine. That leaves 5 other guards that can play in two or three guard lineups that will have good experience and are all worthy of the UCONN jersey. That is amazing depth. I suspect we will continue to take opponents out of their comfort zone with in your face defense. With a years experience it could easily be as good or better than this years D.

I share the sentiment. But I also am not sure what to expect from Morgan. I watched several of her games in high school and she was a high energy oncourt leader. By the time she saw the floor in Storrs, she seems a bit different. More perimeter shooting, less scrapping in the paint. Maybe this is just the usual transition that happens when kids finally arrive at a D1 program. And maybe the high energy game she used to have don’t translate that well to D1. But if it could, if we could see that Morgan, the one who stunned LuHi on their home court, that would be pretty awesome.
