Very excited about tomorrow's game vs two great teams. You guys are obviously favored but maryland has a sneaky talented team this year. Terps have more length on almost every position but uconn has a big backcourt and quickness edge. Terps rebound very well even after losing len. Will be interesting to see if dez wells and roddy peters handle your pressure. A couple notes on our players:

1- Dez wells - strong, great finisher, automatic on the break. Team leader
2- nick faust - big and talented but often makes bonehead plays/off balance shots.
3-Jake layman - great hair, big coming out yr for the sophomore. 6'9 and likes the 3
4-Evan smotrycz - very solid all around flex 4
5-shaq cleare, - center, is a big big boy, he will not be pushed around. but he also doesnt provide any offense.
backup 4/5 - Charles Mitchell - 6'6 but rebounding machine. Will avg double double if he gets the minutes.
backup 1 - Roddy peters - 5 star frosh pg. first Big test for him. 6'4 and loves to run. crafty

Look forward to a close and well played game! If you have any questions I'm happy to answer! Don't feed the hogie after midnight!

So from your post the matchups seem to be:
Napier-Wells
Boatright- Faust
Giffey - Smotrycz
Daniels - Layman
Nolan - Cleare

Backup Bigs
Brimah/Olander - Mitchell

Backup smalls:
Calhoun/Kromah - Peters

Obvious height advantage for Maryland at the guard and weight advantage at the center. Of course Napier and Boatright are two of the best guards in college and play most games at a height disadvantage. I think Daniels should have an advatage at the four.

Appears UConn has more depth, considering Marylands injury. Should be a good game. It will be interesting to see how well Marylands guards can defend UConns backcourt. I don't recommend a zone, ask Cuse how that worked for them.

Edit: curious where you see Peters as a five star? I see him as a four everywhere, not saying he isn't underrated but just odd to call him a five star when he isn't listed anywhere as one.

Considering new hand check rules, I am curious to see if teams, including us, play more zone. I could definitely see Maryland trying some zone if they pick up a few fouls in their backcourt. IMO if we encounter the same problem, then we alternate Napier and boat and let someone else play the 2 until crunch time.

Layman is from Wrentham, ma. Family of D-1 athletes. Outstanding lettuce. It's hypnotic. Kid can play as well.

Yeah, family attends the same Church I do. I don't know if BC missed on him or didn't recruit him.

I think our tempo and outside shooting should prevail in this matchup. Looking forward to seeing these guys as a team, since I couldn't watch the pre-season games.

I hope Daniels and Giffey find that soft spot at the top of the key in a zone. I have confidence these two can knock down the shot from the elbow if the team is zoned. UConn can make teams pay for zoning them with 3 outside shooters in calhoun, Boatright and Napier, and two PF-SF types who can shoot from the elbow. Actually, a zone takes away the big man in the middle, which is UConn's weakness. It may seem to play into UConn's hands.

Thanks for the breakdown. 5 star for your boy Roddy P's a bit of a stretch considering both places I looked had him as ranked 48th in his class and a 4 star, but appreciate the optimism. I'm a little worried about the size of your backcourt....I'm assuming we'll have to put OC/NG/LK on Dez as he's probably too big and strong for Bazz/Boat.

247 has him at 5 but you are right, elsewhere 4 stars.

Layman is a 3, smotrycz 4
Will uconn press a lot tonight?

We didn't press much last year, but we had depth issues. This year we've got a lot of depth, so I wouldn't be surprised if we pressed a decent amount. You won't see it the whole game, but for sure we'll use it from time to time.

I read that Wells is turnover prone. Might be a tough match-up for him at a new PG position.

Link not working. 247 has roddy peters as 5 star and #20 in 2013 class

Interesting. I'd say the consensus is a 4 star though. Nothing wrong with that, all of UConns guards are 4 or 3 stars

Well I'm off to Barclays.

Maryland's backcourt is young. We will press and hopefully run.

This is a good first game for Uconn as they are able to face a team with *thick* players. If there is a negative on this Uconn squad is we dont have that 6-9 260 pd guy or even a 6-6 250 pder but Maryland sure does. So we will see speed vs strength ton
