Great quotes in UConn history

"Isaiah Whaley... THE WRENCH!

He RAN everywhere."

Actually, since this is from one of my all-time favorite interview segments (Dan interviewed by ESPN late in the 2024 season: DAY IN THE LIFE OF DAN HURLEY) I believe it deserves to have the quote and context laid out in full. So here goes:

The quote starts at 3:06 and goes to 3:19 of an interview that ran for 3:39 total.

"(Our) championship program was built with men who ran everywhere, right?... Adama Sanogo Ran everywhere; Jordan Hawkins, he RAN everywhere! Andre RAN EVERYWHERE! Isaiah Whaley... THE WRENCH!"

by the time he said Andre's name he was already hoarse from yelling as he was building himself into a frenzy... and then came Isaiah Whaley's name. And as he said Isaiah's name and then his nickname, he squenched up his face and curled his fingers into a ball as he gets completely lost in the moment thinking of The Wrench. It's freaking hilarious and awesome at the same time! Quintessential Hurley.

If you have never seen it (and I am sure many of you have) then click on the link below and go watch it. The whole interview is good, but that particular segment of him exhorting the team to keep working hard at practice by mentioning the names of guys who helped reset the standard for how to be a champion at UConn, only to work himself into a frenzy, is the best.

.-.
"You are not a point guard!" - Jim Calhoun screaming at Justin Brown in 2001 NIT game at Gampel after Brown tried dribbling and turned the ball over. I think it was in the loss to Detroit Mercy.

The thing I love about UConn is you got to kill em 100 times in March before they die once

I hope it haunts them as long as the Laettner shot haunted us. Hopefully much longer, actually.
Look for a StllH8Mullins handle on their message board in a few years and you’ll know. 😂

Unfortunately Duke has been good for a long, long time so it’ll sting but they’ll get over it. There wasn’t a person in the world who thought we would be seconds from a Final 4 in the 89-90 season which is why it hurt so much. It was a magical season for those who experienced it.

.-.
I can’t find it on the superinformational super highway but bill raferty said after ray allen made this spectacular dunk
“Mr Allen, please come down!”

I have to include the history to make this complete. Many in this site were either young or still unborn. It was the 1986-87 season. It was Calhoun's first year. At the end of the first semester Cliff Robinson and Phil Gamble were suspended from the team due to academics. There were less than 5000 at the civic center vs Seton Hall. At about the 8 minute break the announcer announced to the crowd to please stay to the completion of the game as Coach Calhoun wished to make an announcement. Our record that season was 9-19. After the game Coach Calhoun thanked us for staying with the team and supporting the Huskies. Then the quote. " I promise you you will never have a season like this again." He kept his promise. I believe it was his only losing season

Shabazz taking the mic in 2014 is on top for me. Especially when he told the crowd to be quiet and listen first.

Close second is El Amin before the Duke game. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I’ve been watching “We plan to shock the world today” over and over since the Duke matchup was set. I can’t get enough of all this UConn hype and lore.

First season showed promise even though they were really undermanned. The Huskies did fight hard in the powerful BE. I remember that Greg Economu(sp?) from the golf team was added because Calhoun needed players.

Saw this one today in the NYPost. Very funny.

Hurley said to Andrea on the plane after the win against Duke: "this is wild. Three out of four years, you're going to the Final Four. Did you ever imagine this with your life?"

Andres says "I didn't even know the Final Four existed until four years ago."

“We came here for rings not watches.”
— Hurley during a press conference today on what he told he players getting ready for this weekend.

He went on to say “we don’t hang final four banners at UConn.”
