this is such weird coincidence this topic was brought up. i literally woke up this morning, wanting to watch the departed or the town and decided on the departed.

If you thought Bound was interesting, then you would definitely like Mulholland Drive (David Lynch neo noir, with some mobsters). There’s about 6 minutes in this movie that is a cut above of the rest.

Awesome movie. I can't even imagine how much more dramatic it would have felt watching that movie in the early 1940's.

I'm not sure I would put Casablanca above Citizen Kane or Gone With the Wind (as politically incorrect as the subject matter is) but those three ans the Godfather all belong on an extremely short list.
 
New series Mob Land - Tom Hardy, Eastern Promises, Legend, Mean Streets.

The mafia is fascinating always was for me.
 
The Pope of Greenwich Village is mob adjacent.

I've never seen Godfather 3. I've seen 1 and 2 countless times and never, ever felt like I wanted to watch it.

Much as I'm tempted to convince you it's great in order that you waste three hours of your pathetic life, I just can't do it It pretty much sucks.

I remember seeing godfather 3 in the theater and still remember the feeling in my stomach when i saw that consiglieri Tom Hayden (Robert Duvall) had been replaced by Father Guido Sarducci and Friggin tan George zorro the gay blade Hamilton. Casting atrocity

It was far from good, but it wasn't as horrendous as the critics made it out to be.

Andy Garcia's character was entertaining and Eli Wallach, as what should always have been expected, did a great job.

All in all however Coppola should have left it on the scrap heap.
 
If there was a such thing as the Godfather Part III then I wouldn’t even acknowledge it.

I thought part 2 was better than the first and was then blown away when I watched part 3 and it was significantly better than the first two.

It's so rare that a sequel is better than the original, obviously Caddyshack 2 was the better of the two but you rarely ever see part 3 being better than the first two.

I never really thought of Casablanca as a mob movie, I think of it more as a type of war movie, even though it does not really contain war battles in it. Whatever the case of what type of film it gets classified as, Casablanca is one of my favorite movies of all time.

That was a little topic drift. Someone said that the Godfather was the best movie of all time. I responded "It's in the top two anyway." and then someone asked me what was the other one and I responded "For me? Casablanca."

It's one of my favorite movies of all time as well. It's beautifully made without a wasted scene. Everything in there has a purpose.

Funny thing, before I started attending UConn in the late 1970's, my favorite movie as a teenager before I went to college was probably The Graduate (while it is still a good movie, it is no longer one of my absolute favorites).

I believe I saw Casablanca for the first time as a teenager prior to attending UConn, but I saw it a bunch of times while at UConn. Casablanca was often shown at UConn while I was a student there, as it was presented by film societies at UConn, and also various groups would sponsor it at UConn, as it proved to be a good fundraiser for various dorms and clubs at the school that were trying to raise money. I really fell in love with it during my years there.

I was beginning to think you really went off the deep end. I'm sure we agree that Rocky 5 was the best of that franchise.

Casablanca and the Frank Capra "Why We Fight" series were are the highlights, at least to me.

I skip a lot of the American mobster movies, but have an affinity for the British stuff. Saw Layer Cake mentioned earlier, thoroughly enjoyed that. Also several of Guy Ritchie's. Snatch is my favorite, also like RocknRolla and The Gentleman (there is both a film and a series).

Snatch, it's more of a comedy, but it's a great flick
 
Black Mass is Johnny Depp’s last good movie. It also doesn’t glorify being a mobster. Good movie and true story.
