Good Luck Liam!!!!

I’m looking up salaries now. Liam gets 2.8 million guaranteed for 2 years so 5.6 million. Based on his performance when that runs out he should be able to get another contract worth 20 million right? But even if bounced from the league he has his 5 million.
The Hornets have team options for him for years #3 and 4 worth $3M and $5.4M respectively. Unless it's a complete disaster his first 2 years, they'll pick up those options with little hesitancy.

While those amounts are the official rookie pay scale #'s, teams can go +/- 20% of the rookie scale salary numbers.

It was definitely still the right choice to leave, but the 1st round vs 2nd is a valid discussion. For example Tyler Kolek got $6.6M guaranteed last year as a 2nd rounder
Over 3 years, of course.

Next year's draft class is pretty loaded too. Have 2 projected All-NBA players in Dybansta and Patterson. Then the Boozer twins, Nate Ament, Alijah Arenas, etc. Even if Liam came back and had a BEPOY type season, very possible he'd still be a fringe lottery pick as he'd have 1 more year of tread off his tires. Not to mention the injury risk.
The injury risk has already been incurred. That's the primary reason he fell to #29 - he got hurt and never really recovered fully.

It's a 4 year deal with two club options. If he's as good as advertised, the options get picked up and the deal is worth $14M

TBH, if he had just shut it down for the season after injuring his ankle he probably ends up going higher than 29th. But he's a competitor and wanted to get back out there to help his team win, even if he wasn't 100%.

It was the right decision to go in the first round. I do think if he had stayed, he would've been drafted much higher in next year's draft. But, who knows, right? He's now a multimillionaire who will get to play the game that he loves at the highest level. Hard to call that anything but a huge win.
yourpost is quite accurate
Additionally, the difference in money between Being draft 20 and 28 is not particularly significant

.-.
I think we're all circling the same thing in the end.

  • He came in with a lot of press. Lauded instantly as a probable 1 and done.
  • Got off very hot and backed up the press clippings.
  • Got hurt and missed 5 weeks.
  • Never really was the same after that.
  • Had a pretty average (at best) postseason that didn't help his stock.
  • He was slated as 15-20 and dropped quite a bit. Ended up going to a horrible franchise.
Is he getting paid a lot to play basketball? Did he achieve his dream of the NBA? Yes.
Could he have come back, averaged 20+ and helped lead us to a top 5 rank all year? Yes.
Could he have blown his knee out in preseason? Yes.

He obviously did the "right thing" for him and his wallet but it potentially could have turned out better with different choices.

Clingan's deal at #7 is literally TWICE as much (4yrs $31.1M). Staying at UConn for an extra $17M seems like a better option IMO
So you’re saying that if he stayed another year, he would be drafted in the eighth slot
maybe if he stayed for four years, he drafted first

Congrats to Liam. A great player who never really got to showcase his skills at UConn due to injury. Great late first round pick.

People scoffed at the idea he would go low, when any pair of honest eyes saw it coming. He’s lucky he didn’t fall out of the 1st round. I hope he thrives but I’m not seeing much more than a journeyman on a good day. He just doesn’t have the physicals to hang with NBA super freaks.
pretty much agree but it’s also very possible he could have a 10 year careeer
Look at Pat M in Milwaukee
with changes in the league low paid players
who can make the rotation have more value
the key will be his ability to shoot the 3 at a high
level

What is it with Charlotte and UConn players? Liam, Bouk, Kemba, Mek, Bazz, Burrell & Lamb have all been drafted or ended up there eventually.

.-.
I read somewhere today that Flagg made $28 mil at Duke last year. Is that possible??? Holy *

Yes, the guy who was arguably the best player on the team against Gonzaga in December and getting talked up by the likes of Pitino as a lottery pick, very likely could have returned and moved his draft stock from 29 to 8. And made an additional $15M in the process.

This nonsense: maybe if he stayed for four years, he drafted first
Doesn't deserve a response

Bottom line: a mistake not coming back. He needed time to gain strength and refine his skills getting to the basket. Maybe he would have become next years, Kon Knuepple. Now he gets to be his . . . . backup? Insult to injury. Instead, he falls almost to the second round (guess he wasn't the lottery pick many BY'ers wished he would be.) Should have taken NIL money and improved his game. And for the rest of BY, please, let's not bestow "one-and-done" status on any of our incoming freshman. Let's enjoy the good ones evolve over a few years into greatness.
