Give me an example of Whaley locking up a skilled big. Im not being an ass im seriously asking.
Isaiah Whaley held Evan Mobley to 4 of 10 shooting last year with 5 blocks (not all of them on Mobley). He also had 7 rebounds and only committed 3 fouls. That’s a pretty solid effort against against a highly mobile 7 footer who shot nearly 60% from the floor on the season and was the 3rd overall pick in the draft.

A side note, Whaley also had 10 points in that game.

The only person Gonzaga doesn’t make pay for mistakes is Mark Few.
He paid with 2 games for a non-basketball related issue - he paid in court and through public embarrassment
If it had been an ACC or other P5 coach it would have been brushed under the table
He's a really good guy who made one mistake

A lot depends in this hypothetical UConn-Gonzaga matchup how much and how early Hurley makes the ref call elbows and travels on Timme

Well stated. Too many here not taking into consideration how much of an impact Isaiah had on the defensive end the last couple years. Akok, while a good shot blocker for sure, doesn’t guard as well and didn’t when he was 100%. AA is playing great and he looks like he will be a factor no doubt. But bottom line is if we aren’t making shots we can still stay in the game with solid defense. That we know we get game to game with Whaley.

I will say having he and Andre in the lineup isn’t pretty on the other end for now early on. But I think we need to look at AJ if a change is to be made.

This was also a senior vs a freshman. Drew Timme is 29 years old.

His game reminds me of a more mobile Jorts Josh Harrelson

His antics are super annoying but hard to deny the results

You don't really stop Timme. His touch is too good and their offense allows him to get into position rather easily.

You punish him on the other end in ball screens.

Noticed on the ticker it said Uconn has won two games in a row by 35+ points for the first time since 2006. Thats pretty crazy considering how dominant the 2009 squad was.
Good catch. Turns out that season we never went more than 4 games without playing a ranked opponent. And we had two consecutive 30 point wins during said stretch

That’s quite a stat though, like who is tracking win streaks of 35+ points lol

Not sure if thats accurate. Wasnt Timme a freshmen when we played Gonzaga in the Elite 8 with Rip and Co.?
I'm sure I've said many times "hasn't that player been there for about 8 years?"...but this is stretching credulity a bit past the breaking point. :)

Tre Mitchell sat on the floor in front of the scorer’s table waiting for a stoppage in play so he could enter the game.

He and his Texas teammates were in the process of being routed, 86-74, by Gonzaga, the nation’s No. 1 team. As Mitchell waited, the Longhorns started to show a little bit of life, even though it would eventually prove futile. That’s when coach Chris Beard motioned Mitchell back to the bench. He wouldn’t be checking into the game.

Did Mitchell really transfer from UMass to Texas for this? Potentially, he could have been the preseason Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. A player good enough to finally get UMass back on a winning track with big individual numbers. Instead, he disappeared into the transfer portal.

He went to Austin so he can come off the bench, play about 20 minutes, and basically just be another guy? Based on two early games, that’s what his situation appears to be. He sat on the bench instead of squaring off with Gonzaga’s Drew Timme and measuring his skills against an All-American.

It sure seems like Tre Mitchell would be more valuable at UMass than he is at Texas

You can’t be mad at the kid… he’s being told to do these things. Someone convinced him to transfer.

The big fish left the small pond. I would rather be quality depth in Austin than the A-10 player of the year in Amherst. Either way he is world's away from being an NBA talent.

Either way indeed, you may be right. There are only a couple hundred NBA jobs or there. I’m just addressing all this criticism on the kid himself.
