Look if you can't discuss or debate preferences without making very general, inaccurate and unfounded accusations we have nothing to talk about. Both my children have UConn degrees and very successful careers in education and public relations. My commitment to the academic quality of the University is longstanding and unqualified. As I have often noted here, I have been a fan of the basketball program since 1960. I have never viewed, despite the current inter-conference feeding frenzy, the success of the university's athletic department as "football driven". I understand the reality of college athletics as big business. However, as simply as I can put it, I am almost exclusively a hoops and soccer(my son played for the university) fan. There are a large number of top academic institutions who have nationally known and very successful basketball programs; and either no football or comparatively low level football. Do you think Gonzaga,Butler et al are craving football so they can be successful?
This football related nonsense is for those who can never have enough power and money. I am really not a fan of insults hurled anonymously on message boards and I apologize for my earlier comments. HOWEVER, I would strongly suggest, when you feel the urge to take a very narrow view of someone else's opinion, that you tread carefully with the conclusions that you draw from that line of thinking. If I was not convinced that hoops success was absolutely possible(TV contracts included) without football, I would not have advanced the case. The evidence is there historically. There are plenty of examples complete with top level academics, very successful basketball programs and extraordinarily loyal, passionate and driven fans. And I would ask many of the university presidents and athletic directors to seriously reconsider the concept that bigger and richer is better. Okay, I'm done.
