Someone said on this site today he should only play 7 minutes a game this season. Still feel that way?

I'm a little nervous about this. Sure hope Niels is longing for Storrs right now.

He's playing against grown professional men in this tournament (and even NBA all Star Tony Parker) and logged 31 mins. I think it's safe to say that the person that suggests only 7 mins is a fool.

You guys are selling his performance short: 6 for 6 from the field, 1 for 1 from three, 1 for 1 from the line, 5 rebounds, +15

Nicolas Batum, who averaged 14 ppg in the NBA last season and I assume Giffey spent time guarding: 9 points, 4 for 11, -14

Now we're supposed to believe he's not one of the best six players on the roster even though he just outplayed the guy who was 5th in the NBA in minutes last year.

People forget that NG played 24 minutes in the NC game as a freshman getting 6 boards and 4 points. Look for him to have a break out season this year.

It will be interesting to see how this translates into the college game this year. Over the years there have been many people who have finally put it together in there senior season. I think he has that potential to be a double digit scorer, and definitely the potential to be the starter at the 3 position. Sometimes we forget that when you are on teams like Uconn with a lot of talent year in an year out, sometimes it can be difficult to really shine. I think we can make all the predictions we want, but ultimately every team is different, I think this team will not lose a majority of its fire it did last year and that attitude...I just see them having more resolve...Just remember how many of us were thinking repeat two years ago...we will see

question, with the tourny going on a couple more weeks, will this effect his ability to get back to academics in time? How does this all work?

Yes indeed he played mostly versus Batum. Here you can see the game re-live: http://www.spox.com/de/sport/mehrsp...chland-vorrunde-gruppe-a-frank-buschmann.html

What impresses me most is, that he is getting better every game the play. He started good in the summer with german national team. Especially for such a young kid, but he got better every game the played.

Fiba called him the player of the game. No wonder because when he was on the court the germans outscored france by +15 points! CONGRATZ to Niels!!!

I wonder if many posters here are saving face. NG is the least talked about Husky and perhaps the most ignored (e.g. forgotten). Kid spent 3 years here, endured Calhoun's wrath, never complained about being benched or not starting, cheers wildly for the team including Calhoun and DD, doesn,t fuss when he's open and teammates don't pass him the ball, biggest cheerleader on the team, consummate teammate, keeps himself out of bullshlt, AND earned a Championship ring!

I hope it didn't take one game played a thousand miles away to wake up the fanbase.

Anyway if he doesn't make Captain I will make a public complaint to Ollie and staff, for more than the reasons stated above.

He's a gem! And he's ours.

I also would like to see Niels be made a captain in addition to Bazz. I hope he comes back confident and ready to challenge for a starting spot, not just accept bench or glue guy status. I'm not saying he should be a starter, but I would really like to see him test the limits of his game. Some think he has already done that, but I think he has another gear/level he could reach if he stopped deferring all the time.

For those with a screen to spare at work, Germany is about to tip off on ESPN3. Giffey starting.

Missed first quarter. Giffey having a bad second quarter. Belgium up 30-18 with 3:34 left.

Dang! NG pulls down a rebound at end of first half and rims a 3/4 court shot. He makes that and he's on ESPN's top ten high lights.

the only explanation is either batum was half assing it or Giff is actually the real deal. His earlier double digit performance against France solidifies the latter. He is Germany's best defender.

Germany plays zone. Luckily, Giffey won't have to put up with idiocy at UConn.
