This shows why the playoffs were necessary. It's not sufficient to just say "the SEC is the best conference" anymore.

Oh yeah? You just got your butts whooped. You are a recent Big12 addition (Texas) away from being shut out of the Final 4...

SEC was legitimately the best for a while but it was overstated. People acted like they reinvented the sport and nobody else could keep up.

FBS is finally learning what the FCS has known for decades: go out there and prove it...
I think a lot of people are also getting sick and tired of so many making it out like football is just a Southern sport now. It's nonsense, they're more obsessed with it overall but football is huge in a lot of places in the north and there's great players everywhere.

They're more obsessed with it on a percentage basis. But based on total population, I'm guessing the north has more football fans. Alabama's population is only 1 million more than Connecticut...

The SEC has had a rough bowl season. Favored snub 'Bama got beat by a mediocre Michigan team, Tennessee was crushed, their best, Georgia loses to a Notre Dame team that some questioned, by a margin that was worse than oft-belittled Indiana (who had to play Notre Dame at home, rather than in the south), the one team who is still alive Texas did so by playing the worst two teams in the field, playing the most competitive of the first round home games to the worst team in the field & needing two OTs to beat the second worst team in the field.

Using the playoff ranks & not seeds:

#11 Alabama lost to unr Michigan
#7 Tennessee was blown out by #6 Ohio State
#2 Georgia lost to #5 Notre Dame in New Orleans and was largely uncompetitive
#3 Texas beat #16 Clemson at home & #12 Arizona State in 2 OT in Georgia

With the playoff in general...

I think it still does actually make sense to protecting the top 4 conference champions with a bye and saving them from the first-round home games, I think it rewards and retains at least a modicum of value on the conference championship games. You have to reseed the quarterfinals once it gets to the neutral sites, otherwise you run into a situation (like this year) where the 5 seed is arguably the most desirable seed.

Had they done it this year the first round is unchanged, but the quarterfinals go as Oregon - Arizona State; Georgia - Boise State; Texas - Ohio State; Penn State - Notre Dame. You run into a situation where you're setting up the Oregon - Arizona State winner vs. Penn State - Notre Dame in one semi... and Georgia - Boise State winner vs. Texas - Ohio State in the other.

All 4 top seeds lost, but it also shows they screwed up the seeding big time. No way top seed Oregon should draw Ohio State after a month off of not playing IMO. If anything I think it shows playing in that 1st round did provide an advantage to being a little sharper their 2nd game. The playoffs however are great to watch even if the games haven't been thrilling. They're like a final four atmosphere every game and that's fun to watch.

Rest vs Rust.

SEC was only considered the best because Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Georgia. The rest of the conference was pretty lackluster for a while. But other schools definitely have hired some good coaches.

I understand it may not be popular to defend the Dawgs, but there's a good chance that's a different game with Beck out there.
I don't think so ND defense has been historically great this year. UGA wasn't as dominant this year.

Gotta throw LSU in that group. Multiple national championships.
