Geno VS Dawn

Dawn has a significant losing record to Geno. The reaching some of ya’ll do around here…
No argument there, but Dawn is only, seemingly, getting better as a coach--and stronger and more compelling as a recruiter. I am a staunch UConn WBB fan, but truth will out.

I never made any declarations. I pointed out facts and said let us see how it turns out.
No, you didn't (make declarations, that is). My post was about the thread in general. You just happened to be in the crosshairs when I made it. No offense, didn't mean to single you out.

A'ja had about 30 points in that game. She was going up against a team that was loaded with McDonald's All American. Getting to the elite 8 was the ceiling for that particular team. No one expected that team to beat UCONN.
The team that lost Coates, Davis and Gray to bring in Jennings, Cliney and a freshman Bianca Jackson into the starting lineup was doomed from the start. Once Cuevas medically redshirted that year and Lindsey Spann went down for the year with injuries even the elite eight seemed like a pipe dream for that squad.

South Carolina played a wonderful game against UConn and deserved to win. Right now they are ahead of us in their overall team refinement..... we will get better I am sure.

On your statement here.... I think that you may just be throwing red meat for a reaction.

With Dawn... she is a good coach yes. And she has been getting good recruits yes. But look at some of the facts.... She has been coaching 20 years. She has one national championship. 5 years ago she had some great recruits just like now. Aja Wilson was a transcendant player. She won 1 title at SC. Much like Griner at Baylor or Ewing at Georgetown. A super blue chip recruit .... 4 years and 1 title to show for it. Taurasi had 3. Stewie had 4.

The great teams and the great coaches win titles. When is anybody going to win 11 natties again? Mulkey and Tara have 3 each. Dawn has 1. And I wouldn't shut the door on Geno and Chris getting 12, 13, and up. Too early to shut the door on them.
Wilson was nowhere near the level that DT or Stewart were. Bad comparison IMO. The level of talent SC has now is much better than it was during Wilson's era.

UCONN was loaded with collegiate All Americans...they had KLS/Collier/Williams who each won multiple AA honors, the national DPOY in Nurse, future WNBA ROY in Crystal Dangerfield and brought in Stevens off the bench. No one ever expected SC to repeat or even contend for a repeat title with the roster they had.

When Geno was coaching the Olympic team and Dawn was an assistant coach half of the Olympic team were UCONN players. I’m speculating that Dawn has an idea of what Geno likes to run. Dawn has an understanding of what Geno run. Hence “I think this may work”..

Ya that is fair and i agree with you..... having said that.... people have got to stop saying that Dawn is the second coming..... she is a good coach..... but she has been doing it 20 years..... how many titles will she win? Boston was a great pluck from genos backyard.... she is a junior now... how many titles will she have

Second coming may be a stretch but her teams have gotten better and better over her time at SC. Back in 2014 everyone called SC a pretender for getting the #1 seed somewhat controversially, and from there she's steadily improved the program into a national power.

I dont see anyone claiming that Dawn is going to go on and break Geno's records or surpass him at an all time level, but people do believe she could take over the role as having the dominant program in women's basketball. Historically only Pat Summitt has been able to recruit at a comparable level to Geno but now Dawn is on a recruiting tear with loaded rosters projected for the next several seasons that are comparable to Geno's. In the first matchup this year, Dawn got the better of Geno with relatively equal rosters. Time will tell if she can take her program to the next level of being the perennial title favorite.

Boston could win 2 or 3 titles potentially if she stays a 5th year, but realistically I don't expect her to since she should be a top pick in the 2023 draft. Her first year SC and Oregon were the very heavy title favorites entering the NCAAs but then covid happened so it's hard to hold 2020 against her since there has only been 1 NCAA tournament in her 2 seasons.

'Could' Geno have JUMPED THE SHARK as far as coaching in "Today's Game" ? Yes, Geno is one the greatest Women's Basketball Coaches in NCAA History (Tara is still going as well). However, has today's game have passed him by? Or maybe this team truly misses SHEA RALPH ??

Yup, he hasn't been in a Final Four in quite awhile. Oh wait...
And BTW, who is his closest competition for current consecutive FF appearances? Elite 8? Sweet Sixteen?
I say no and he's never seen a shark to jump.

And for a newcomer to the BY, that didn't take long...

I believe that I would rather see an average coach with great players than, a great coach with average players.

Maybe she was the interpreter between 67 year old Geno and 18-22 year old players. My employees in that age bracket are certainly hard to understand, mainly that they use every second of sick leave and vacation time. I have managers in place that are younger than me and can bridge the gap.

well the 2 games Uconn lost last season Shea Ralph was not in either, might be something to look into. I guarantee you the guards miss her.

Ty Harris and MHH were also on that team. Future WNBA player with the best player in the game and defending national champions and you can't do better than that? Come on. Lose to that UConn team? Sure. Get annihilated like they did in an NCAA tournament Elite 8 game? No, especially not after already losing to the same team by 25 points earlier in the season.

I hadn't realized until this morning that UConn never lost a game with Shea Ralph as an assistant coach. I hope she includes that on her resume.

Just for the record they didn't play USC(University of Southern California) they played SC (South Carolina)
Just for the record the University of Southern California did not have the USC as their first logo, it only became USC because of football in the 60's. While the real USC (University of South Carolina) has always been USC. The first USC is three quarters of a century older established in 1805 then that one from California established in 1880.

1801, but close enough. The first classes were held in 1805.

You can say that Dawn had a different focus than Geno. Throughout the tournament Dawn judiciously used her bench by limiting key players minutes to 25 to 28 minutes a game. This is wise when playing 3 games in 3 days. Geno says he doesn't coach for November, he coaches for March. He played his key players in excess of 30 minutes in each game. You saw a decided difference in the UConn performance as the game progressed. They were dominant early, even for a while, and UConn was gassed in the late going. Dawn coached to win the tournament, Geno coached to win THE tournament.
you right he coaches for March the past 5 seasons have proven that. Now if only he could coach for April like he used to.

I disagree with one particular season. Gabby & Kia Nurse junior season, USC was supposed to beat UConn. They had two true post players along with 3 good guards compared to our undersized post players. On paper, that should’ve been a win for Dawn but in reality, it wasn’t. So I won’t quite say that she didn’t have the player(s) to match Geno. But if you want to talk in the singular term, A’ja Wilson was “the player” that was supposed to propel USC past UConn but she went 0-4 ‍♂️
0-5

That was left for Bird Taurasi and Catchings.

Yes, I’m aware. In the Carolina’s, folks refer to South Carolina as USC as well. Southern Cal refers to themselves as “The Real USC”.

One player is not going to do that. UCONN had a full slate of great players and one great players against many great players is not something that will propel you......nice try though.
I’m well aware. I was replying to the previous post #thanks

Fixed... here in NC... South Carolina is South Carolina not USC.
