Geno VS Dawn

Maybe Dawn's team is better, maybe more experienced, maybe tougher

Geno has time to fix all of that

I think that what worked for South Carolina was their defense, the relative freshness of their rotation, and their fewer miscues in the second half, compared to UConn’s reliance on a shorter rotation after having to do that also against USF, their fatigue, and a corresponding increase in their miscues in the second half. I am also pretty confident that if a couple of Paige’s shots in that fourth quarter had found the bottom of the net, the momentum could have swung the other way. I would not reach a conclusion that Dawn outcoached Geno.

I disagree with one particular season. Gabby & Kia Nurse junior season, USC was supposed to beat UConn. They had two true post players along with 3 good guards compared to our undersized post players. On paper, that should’ve been a win for Dawn but in reality, it wasn’t. So I won’t quite say that she didn’t have the player(s) to match Geno. But if you want to talk in the singular term, A’ja Wilson was “the player” that was supposed to propel USC past UConn but she went 0-4 ‍♂️
Just for the record they didn't play USC(University of Southern California) they played SC (South Carolina)

But he doesn’t go after a lot of the same girls that Dawn goes after ‍♂️. We just got one kid who verbally committed to USC but signed with UConn last week.
You thought KK Arnold was committed to SC? There is exactly one SC fan who said that. Truth is nobody knows. Another speculation is that Fulwiley is the silent so KK wasn't a take. That's another RUMOR that was passed around. We don't know who the birdie is...we can just assume we will one day find out.

Dawn coached to win the tournament, Geno coached to win THE tournament.
Or maybe Dawn coached to win them both. She played a lot of reserves many minutes all through the first part of the season. When they got to a big game they were a big reason that SC won because they CONTRIBUTED when they were in there. That experience could also pay off in the NCAA tournament.

You can say that Dawn had a different focus than Geno. Throughout the tournament Dawn judiciously used her bench by limiting key players minutes to 25 to 28 minutes a game. This is wise when playing 3 games in 3 days. Geno says he doesn't coach for November, he coaches for March. He played his key players in excess of 30 minutes in each game. You saw a decided difference in the UConn performance as the game progressed. They were dominant early, even for a while, and UConn was gassed in the late going. Dawn coached to win the tournament, Geno coached to win THE tournament.
I do believe that's the plan, but sometimes players also wear down over the course of a season, especially underclassmen. With as many injuries as we've already seen this season, going 2 deep at every position is a nice luxury to have.

Your analysis is correct but I don’t buy your conclusion. Both have deep benches. Both wanted to beat each other. Both wanted to with the tournament. One succeeded. One didn’t. “THE” Tournament had little or nothing to do with either coaches
strategy. Coaches learn from each other. Maybe this was a teaching moment for one of them.
Did you happen to notice Geno seated on the bench smiling during the 4th quarter. He didn't appear to be too upset about the final score. I had checked the game times of the two teams before the 3rd game and when I saw him smile, I remembered his words, "I don't coach for November, I coach for March". "THE" tournament is the center of everything UConn.

Dawn is the future.Geno will not win another title. He can’t get the recruits Dawn gets.
The future right now is Vanderbilt. Stanford level academics, UConn level coaching, and world class facilities all in the greatest town in the South.

Yes Gino always got the top recruits now it is 2021.He is the top dog but things are changing.Of course he was getting the top recruits when he was winning all those championships. The Megan Walker class was a complete bust.Azzi is rated #1.Let’s come back at the end of the year and see how accurate those rankings are.I am not a Notre Dame fan but I have to call it as I see it they have a better freshman class.Olivia Miles a point guard with swag scored 26 yesterday against Georgia. There other freshman Sonia Citron played on The National Junior with Azzi.Citron made the all tournament team.Azzi had a forgettable tournament.Let’s come back at the end of the year and do a re-ranking of of the 21 class.I do like Brady for next year she has post moves can hit a jumper from 15 feet out big body. Not as high on Patterson as many people are just because she can dunk.

You do realize how silly the narrative you're pushing sounds. Yes Geno is coaching for March but you don't think Tara, Dawn or every other elite programs aren't as well. SC was a one shot away from what could have been a shot at their 2nd title, Dawn and her team have made it clear what their goal is on numerous occasions.

You lost us at “Gino”

Of course your right. I did not disparage any other coach. It reflects Geno's attitude towards losses as he endeavors to educate the fan base. Don't get worked up over losses. They are part of the game. And as UConn fans we realize that. this whole thread is from posters who either have a short memory or don't understand Geno and UConn. Listen in 2012-13 UConn lost to Notre Dame here and there and in the Big East final. In the final four we beat them and won the Natty. Losses in the regular season are ok, wins in the regular season are fine. March, it all revolves around March. Early losses are good for UConn. We don't try to lose but it's upon the teaching and attitude changes that come from losses that build national championships.

Of course, Coach Dawn out coached Coach Geno. Gotta give Coach Dawn her respect as a Coach. She made adjustments and her players adapted. Nothing more to say.

It doesn't matter that we lost one game. Or possibly two or three (for the year). Geno's often said we need to get our butts kicked. Maybe this will light a fire. I don't believe it's Geno's coaching. I believe our players just didn't execute. They made some silly plays and didn't seem completely on point. With that said, this post is ridiculous. Geno has never used a "Ball" for an excuse. That still rubs me the wrong way. Geno owns up to his teams short comings and gives credit to other teams when they deserved it. Dawn is a great coach and I do like her, but she's no Geno.

Dawn coaches that way regardless of if it is a tournament or not. She goes out of her way to get players minutes although sometimes it messes up flow and chemistry. In the game against Elon, SC was outscored in the 2nd quarter because she wanted to get her younger players in the game to gain more experience.

I’ve seen plenty of Geno’s smiles over the years. Most of them reflect anything but happiness. Sorta like a “ They Aren’t freshmen. They’ve played hundreds of games. Practiced thousands of hours. And they come here and play like this? I shoulda gone swimming with the Stingrays”…smile.

Figures a SC fan would take my post seriously.

But while we’re on the subject, Dawn had A’ja 4 years and couldn’t beat UConn once with her even after Stewie graduated.
The only year A'ja had enough talent around her to beat UCONN was her Junior year. SC lost by 11 at UCONN. Her senior year the talent level dropped significantly. It was even worse the year after she left. Then we got the number #1 recruiting class to go along with a few good players that did not transfer out. We are now 2-1 against UCONN and the two wins were not even close. The talent level is now equal and we will see how it turns out over the next few years.

I dont think it's out of line to say Dawn outcoached Geno this game. SC was down 15-28 and then finished the game outscoring UCONN 58-29, including 16-3 in the 4th. SC made the adjustments needed by clamping down on defense, dominating the glass and exploiting matchups and was the clear cut better team when the buzzer sounded. The rosters that had comparable talent evidenced by last year's OT game, both teams making similar tournament runs, and both squads returning everyone It doesn't mean she's a better coach overall nor does it take away from Geno's abilities or accomplishments, but yeah, she definitely got the better of him in the first match up.

It doesn't matter that we lost one game.
I thought the SC game was an excellent loss. It was early in the season and provided valuable information for future practices/games. Although Geno likes to win, I suspect he also enjoys the problem solving when play breaks down.

Geno is Geno. He’s obviously a brilliant coach, but he’s human like the rest of us. He is great at coaching in most things, and not so great in a few things. He’s not had to be brilliant at in-game coaching due to lack of opportunity compared to other teams; hence, it’s not his strong suit. Periodically, everyone sees this weakness exposed.

As much as I have enjoyed undefeated seasons, I’m also glad that pressure has eased.

Well it could be that Geno also had some plays that might have worked against SC but the execution failed??? Especially in the 4th quarter...
So maybe Geno out coached Dawn???
Usually adjustments after Half time are done by better coaching and adjusting to what the other team is throwing at you. Uconn did not adjust and seemed lost in that fourth quarter. That's when the coaching should make a difference. And making the right substitutions.

I was just curious how many thought that Geno was outcoached by Dawn. The reason I ask is the SC player saying at half time that Dawn talked about a few plays that may work against Uconn in the 2nd half. They obviously did.
Old Russian proverb: Talent and Size will out. Meaning they will win every time. If out coaching means she got Boston and Geno didn't--maybe. I won't take the "Uconn kids were tired after 3 games in 3 days and the tough uSF game. This is the staff that condition players to run 40 minutes every day.
Paige is a super talent, a dedicated player, I could list the others but why do it? USC has a hard to beat combination of very very good guards, excellent posts, good wings. Uconn has extremely good guards, 2 or three with not enough PT this year so far, Dorka is another in her learning curve, Griffin hurting, Muhl hurting, ONO played her best game in a Uconn uniform. When a team see's the potential for losing emotions are tiring. Those plays those things that worked so well in 4 other game suddenly not working--takes the wind out of your Sails No, Geno wasn't out coached. His team wasn't outplayed. Boston, Henderson, Cooke were just better this one day. I suggest it won't happen again.

Dawn's not a better coach, but has lately been the better recruiter. Plucking Boston from Geno was the steal of the century. She's amassed a very imposing, deep physical lineup.
