Geno on Blanca

.-.
LOL, Svengali at work:

I thought that was a statement Geno wanted Blanca to read. Well, a national television audience and a sold-out basketball venue gathered to watch the top freshman in the country play. They saw her but, to their surprise, she was not on the USC team. She played for UConn. Give her the playing time Jazzy gets (which she cannot get at UConn) people would see just how much better Blanca is, and Jazzy is very good.

Let’s hope UConn runs into OK in the Big Dance. I can only imagine what Geno will say about Aaliyah Chavez……..Tackling Fuel?
Well, when will Sienna Betts make her long awaited appearance for UCLA? That could be a direct matchup we could watch as @FanSince17 notes, if we play OK Azzi may have Chavez and/or Verhulst with KK taking the other. Either way, they will be shut down.

Not only do I agree with that, but I'm thrilled she's starting to get the national attention she deserves. In every post game thread chat, when I talk about Blanca, I say that IMHO she's one of the top 5 freshmen in the nation. Who knows what the conversation would be if she were a starter and playing 30+ minutes per game like Chavez (30.5) and Davidson (32.7)?

I remember reading that some "experts" thought that the younger Betts was a bit overrated coming out of high school.........I think big sis is.........time will tell....

I suspect the younger Betts could develop even better than her sister. Though Cori may not be the coach to make this happen. After 2+ seasons at UCLA Lauren is still less developed than Brink was as a sophomore at Stanford. The transfer got her a lot more playing time but the cost of that may be that she is still a quite limited player — excellent at what she does in the paint and a good passer out to the perimeter. But there is very little else to her game at present. I have a feeling Sienna will do better what with her greater foot speed and the beginnings of a midrange game.

Isn't Lauren Betts a pretty good shot blocker? In the National Semi-final, ESPN was expressing that idea.
BTW, I am not defending her...at 6'7 I think that she doesn't dominate the game as much as I would expect.

Is Davidson really that good? She has 177 points on 178 shots which is pretty abysmal. 26 blocks is impressive.
I think Davidson is an outstanding talent. What I don’t like is that USC HC Lindsay Gottlieb is running the same “ball dominant” offense she ran with JuJu Watkins, only with Davidson running the show. Davidson is not Watkins and I think she’s taking and missing a lot of shots. Next year should be interesting assuming Watkins is back healthy along with Davidson, as well as incoming #1 recruit Saniya Hall.

Svetlana Abrosimova was a star forward for UConn women's basketball (1997-2001), known for her all-around game, helping the Huskies to a national title (2000) and earning three-time Kodak All-American honors, with career averages of 14.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and 3.7 APG, scoring over 1800 points and grabbing over 800 rebounds before her career was cut short by injury in her final season.
Career Highlights at UConn
  • Scoring: 1865 points (14.7 PPG).
  • Rebounding: 814 total rebounds (6.4 RPG).
  • Assists: 473 total assists (3.7 APG).
  • Awards: 3-time Kodak All-American, NCAA Regional MOP (2000), Big East Player of the Year (1998-99).
  • Championships: NCAA National Champion (2000).
Year-by-Year Breakdown (Partial)
  • 1997-98 (Sophomore): 14.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.7 APG (538 points, 235 reb, 114 ast in 37 games)
  • 1998-99 (Junior): 16.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 3.7 APG (564 points, 226 reb, 127 ast in 34 games)

Legacy
  • Inducted into the UConn "Huskies of Honor" in 2006.
Svetlana is the only person that I can think of that Blanca reminds me of....

Either way, Geno found another gem.

Once Juju returns, Davidson will have a much easier time scoring as she will no longer be the main offensive focus for defenses......

Indeed. I thought that would be included among the excellent things she does in the paint. Sorry for not itemizing them. More striking, do me, was how mediocre she was whenever she was required to defend outside the paint. In the final four game, whenever switches brought out to guard Sarah or Paige she looked hapless.

.-.
Well, to do that she'll need to become the best offensive rebounder in the country. 😉
I wonder how Gottlieb is going to handle JuJu, two # 1s and Kennedy Smith? I’m guessing “Let’s get JuJu her 28 points, then the rest of you can start shooting”. “The rest of you, concentrate on two things! Play defense and…..you guessed it! Get the ball to JuJu!” Somehow, I don’t think that will play well with Jazzy & Saniyah. We will see, I suppose. Meanwhile, Blanca may be better than all of them imo! We’ll see when they’re all seniors but my bet is on Blanca!

Mine as well !!! 😁

Per 100 possessions:

Blanca Quinonez: 30.9 pts, 8.7 rebs, 5.7 assists, 4.5 stls, 21 field goal attempts

Though to be fair to Jazzy, I'd add in blocks.
One more thing: I'd be curious to know fg, 3 pt, and ft percentages in addition to assist to turnover ratio.

Does anyone know JAZZY's WINGSPAN?? Seeing her block so many
shots caught my attention!!! THIS comparison will be one that I will be
watching in the future. FYI: (since you asked, Basingstoke): JAZZY's Stats from the USC webpage, as of today, 12/13/2025: 12 games / 12 starts, FG% .407, 3 point % .274, Free throw % .633, PPG 16.8, rebounds/ game 6.7, with 45 assists and
37 turnovers for a 1.2162 a/to ratio. She also has 24 steals in 12 games,
30 blocks in 12 games, i.e. 2.5 blocks per game. Some have described her
as a HIGH-VOLUME shooter, but then again, she seems to be carrying
the TROJAN team (somewhat). I do appreciate the "per 100 possessions"
stat. Sometimes I just think of the "eye test". "I" think Jazzy is very good!
