Hope Muffet gets it. That would help soften the blow if Notre Dame doesn't win the National Championship.

Someone else has to win it this year. Look out for the Godfather next year!

I am a little perplexed as to how Kim Mulkey got into this equation? She has a player that on her worst day is still 6"8, able to dunk and the only college player still in contention to make the Olympic team along with one of the best point guards to back her up. I bet many Boneyarders could coach Baylor and win most of their games. Coaches such as Tina Martin, Brenda Frese, Katie Meier all had great success through team coaching, by building teams that were far weaker at the beginning of season and ended up with very good teams at the end...rather than relying on team exceptions. Kim Barnes Arico, who really created something speacial, once all her players where healthy, took an unranked team into UCONN and beat them, something that happens every decade or so.....Or how about Matt Bollant which the last two seasons compiled the best record of any Division 1 team in the country. And the team did it without someone 6-foot-8 jumping center for them or a speedy guard to distract from her. Yes, the argument comes up about strength of schedule, but then why is Tara on the list. COY says given where you started the season, how well did you do this year compared to expectations…and starting the season with 6’8” center and winning all your games, was not surprising to me…it was what I expected...not COY. Congrats to Jim Crowley for making that list as I try to provide support for the rest of the best....

Geno won when he had Maya, right?

Going undefeated is impressive.

It should Crowley or Mulkey.

But if this team manages a NC it will among Geno's greatest coaching jobs ever.

The Naismith nominating committee will look foolish and shortsighted when Geno is cutting down the nets in Denver with this young Huskies team!

Chucke, which team would that be? UCONN...that I would have to agree would be one of Geno's best efforts, especially given how the Brackets could end up....Miami, ND, and Baylor...

There is NO WAY GA's name should not be on the list. Geno has done a great job this year with No All-American , a Freshman , The BE Tournament Championship , and garnered a No.1 seed in the NCAA Tournament ........... Now thats coaching my friend. Problem is, Geno has set such high standards that even he has trouble matching his past accomplishments. Kim Mulkey should win it if she goes 40-0 , with or without Griner. But if she stumbles , COY could go to any of the finalists , and that list should include GA.

It's interesting that UConn doesn't have any of the best players, a coach who hasn't done one of the best coaching jobs of this season (obviously, he's one of the most respected coaches in his professsion on a year in/out basis), and yet somehow, this team is co-champion of an extremely tough league and a national #1 seed. Someone must have done a really good job to get UConn to that point.

Hayes was listed as a Second Team All-American by ESPN. In the preseason, multiple UConn players were listed in the Top Five of their respected positions.

And you are talking about one freshman, KML (for the most part). Hayes is a senior. Faris and Doty are upperclassmen. Hartley and Dolson have a year under their respective belts.

Look at this team and then look at the team in 2003 outside of Diana. I would submit that 2003 was a much greater coaching job by Geno. In away, that 2003 team was like a version of Delaware - one superstars with a lot of roleplayers (though most thought, at the time, that Turner and Strother would turn into stars).

That being said, I think Geno has done a great job because he replaced one of the two best players in the history of the program and is playing without a power forward. I would have had him in my top five candidates, for sure.

1. Diana>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>EDD

2. Diana's supporting cast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> EDD's supporting cast. To your point, Annie, and BT may not have become the players many thought, but UD doesn't have any high-profile kids other than EDD. Annie was a high school #1. She never became a prima donna, but she was a terrific supporting player her first two seasons, and a luxury to have in that role.

In 2003, Geno had the NPOY. This year, he may not have a first team AA, even the 10-member WCBA/State Farm team. Now, in 2003, UConn won the NC and is not favored to match that feat, but Geno's done a pretty impressive job getting this team this far.

The vote is taken before the finals.
I understand they can't give it to Geno every year, but why not wait until the season is over? Does the NC mean nothing?

Tara lost 2 pgs (Green and Camp) and a wing player (Ruef) to injuries, and graduated Pedersen and Pohen - who were 4 yr starters and all time 3 pt shooter in Stanford history, which is saying something. And 6 of the 11 teams we played out of conference are in the NCAA tourney.

I agree, but this happens with Academy Awards as well. How many Best Picture Oscars are awarded to films that years later don't look so good but were more of a fad among critics at the time?

I think that when it comes to working with what you have, nobody laid a finger on Kim Barnes Arico this year.

KBA does not belong anwhere near NCOY, IMO. Nice win in Storrs, some other solid wins in league, but some bad losses too, injuries notwithstanding.

Not sure that Crowley belongs in the NCOY discussion at this point, either. They went 29-3 against what RPI says is the 111th ranked schedule in the country and lost their league tournament to a pretty mediocre Dayton team (who they barely beat during the season). Jeff Sagarin's Predictor model has the Bonnies at #51 nationally. If they make some noise in the tourney, I'll change my tune, but not at this point.

Nobody expected anything from St Bonaventure this year and they had a superb season. He'd probably get my vote.

Agree!
Working with what you have is not as important as having what you need, i.e. recruiting. Having brought the right people into the program to begin with should enter into that honor as well. You could have great coaching skills, but if you can't attract the talent you won't get far, eh.

Kim Barnes-Arico or Doug Bruno come to mind for me, long before McGraw.
