But if this team manages a NC it will among his greatest coaching jobs ever.
But if this team manages a NC it will among Geno's greatest coaching jobs ever.
There is NO WAY GA's name should not be on the list. Geno has done a great job this year with No All-American , a Freshman , The BE Tournament Championship , and garnered a No.1 seed in the NCAA Tournament ........... Now thats coaching my friend. Problem is, Geno has set such high standards that even he has trouble matching his past accomplishments. Kim Mulkey should win it if she goes 40-0 , with or without Griner. But if she stumbles , COY could go to any of the finalists , and that list should include GA.
1. Diana>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>EDDHayes was listed as a Second Team All-American by ESPN. In the preseason, multiple UConn players were listed in the Top Five of their respected positions.
And you are talking about one freshman, KML (for the most part). Hayes is a senior. Faris and Doty are upperclassmen. Hartley and Dolson have a year under their respective belts.
Look at this team and then look at the team in 2003 outside of Diana. I would submit that 2003 was a much greater coaching job by Geno. In away, that 2003 team was like a version of Delaware - one superstars with a lot of roleplayers (though most thought, at the time, that Turner and Strother would turn into stars).
That being said, I think Geno has done a great job because he replaced one of the two best players in the history of the program and is playing without a power forward. I would have had him in my top five candidates, for sure.
I understand they can't give it to Geno every year, but why not wait until the season is over? Does the NC mean nothing? The vote is taken before the finals.
I am a little perplexed as to how Kim Mulkey got into this equation? She has a player that on her worst day is still 6"8, able to dunk and the only college player still in contention to make the Olympic team along with one of the best point guards to back her up. I bet many Boneyarders could coach Baylor and win most of their games. Coaches such as Tina Martin, Brenda Frese, Katie Meier all had great success through team coaching, by building teams that were far weaker at the beginning of season and ended up with very good teams at the end...rather than relying on team exceptions. Kim Barnes Arico, who really created something speacial, once all her players where healthy, took an unranked team into UCONN and beat them, something that happens every decade or so.....Or how about Matt Bollant which the last two seasons compiled the best record of any Division 1 team in the country. And the team did it without someone 6-foot-8 jumping center for them or a speedy guard to distract from her. Yes, the argument comes up about strength of schedule, but then why is Tara on the list. COY says given where you started the season, how well did you do this year compared to expectations…and starting the season with 6’8” center and winning all your games, was not surprising to me…it was what I expected...not COY. Congrats to Jim Crowley for making that list as I try to provide support for the rest of the best....
And rare. Even with tremendous talent.Geno won when he had Maya, right?
Going undefeated is impressive.
It should Crowley or Mulkey.

That's hollywood; this is real.I agree, but this happens with Academy Awards as well. How many Best Picture Oscars are awarded to films that years later don't look so good but were more of a fad among critics at the time?
.

Agree!I think that when it comes to working with what you have, nobody laid a finger on Kim Barnes Arico this year.
Working with what you have is not as important as having what you need, i.e. recruiting. Having brought the right people into the program to begin with should enter into that honor as well. You could have great coaching skills, but if you can't attract the talent you won't get far, eh.Agree!
