As long as she's working hard in practices, I see no reason why she can't play the last two minutes of a 45 point blow out in Big East play......if Geno pulls the starters during the middle of the third quarter, everybody should get a few minutes, including Gandy......

I believe IMO that it bothers Geno that he can't get everyone "adequate" playing time, otherwise he wouldn't mention it so much in his pressers. I also believe that he has a responsibility to these players that he has recruited. I might even go so far as to say that that responsibility supersedes record, and championships. I could put up a decent argument for that. There are 200+ schools in America she could be playing for.
We all know the quality of UConn, in a hundred ways, but kids want to play.
Did they overcompensate for half a decade of injury after injury? A lot of talk on BY about Kelis as well!

Absolutely not. This is not a T-ball team

Was she promised playing time? No.

She was promised an opportunity to get better and learn and be part of this experience. I presume she is getting that.

I appreciate your response. I do think we also have to think about the young people too. They're kids. (Trust me, I idolize this program and Geno)

Geno has quite the dilemma, which will even get worse when Morgan and Ice return. Do you take away minutes from players 6 through 10 so that lower performing players( and some fans) are happy? When you take those minutes from 6 through 10 that is less experience for those that might be called on in March/April. Geno by all accounts is an extraordinary human being but I suspect he’ll put up with some hurt feelings because he recruited these kids to win championships.

Geno isn’t getting paid millions a dollars a year to coach a park and rec league team. This is D1 college athletics. It’s big business and worth big dollars. Geno gets paid to win, period. Nobody is guaranteed playing time. In the modern era, the player has plenty of options and is free to navigate the situation however they choose.

Can’t be done, her redshirt is already blown.
i'm not sure but perhaps someone can answer this. If a player on the roster does not play a certain amount of minutes can they consider it a red shirt season???

Only if they play ZERO minutes for the season. Any time played in any part of the regular or postseason uses a full year of eligibility. A medical (or illness) waiver is the only way to get that year back to use after a player's 4 years of eligibility has expired.

…unless they’re injured. Then, they can have played up to 30% of games

At the open practice I attended right before Thanksgiving, there was a lot of scrimmaging and Gandy was on the team with the male practice players. That is getting her some good reps against Serah and Jana. She is not working with her teammates in game simulated situations and learning defensive rotations and offensive sets though, but she is getting experience just being on the floor and simply learning how to play basketball at this level. The other stuff will have to come later, I guess. Even Serah has said that she (Serah) is struggling with all that.

If Geno were to put Gandy in for a few minutes, he would have to take someone out. That would probably be Jana, but she has only played a total of 54 minutes over the last five games. I assume that is what Geno is thinking, Jana isn't getting nearly enough minutes as it is. And Ayanna, who is finally healthy and is significantly ahead of Gandy in development, is hardly playing at all.

Geno may also feel that he owes it to the other reserves on the court to have everyone out there on the same page and familiar with offensive plays and defensive options so that they can get the most out of their limited court time.

Playing her a few minutes in a couple of games early in the season is a head scratcher. I wonder if Geno has second thoughts about that.

Yes, that's why I mentioned the medical waiver.
Just spelling out the details. There is some confusion because a lot of people have heard a player can redshirt if she plays less than a certain number of games but I just wanted to be clear that’s only for medical redshirts

Yes, they're confusing it with the football rules that allow up to 4 games before losing the year. As the article I linked in post #17 mentions, Coach Tom Izzo and most other coaches thought that the rule might get changed to include basketball in the last year or so but they're still waiting because of some (supposed) complications involving NIL among others.

He was asked a general question about playing time in the Marquette postgame presser.

It’s been decades since he lost his mind in a press conference
Speaking to him, one-on-one, if you say the wrong thing he is very capable of being rather caustic. Suggesting that he should play someone more minutes is dangerous territory, depending on his mood.

And it hasn't been decades. Didn't he go off on a reporter for the UConn newspaper reporter just 3 or 4 years ago? Made headlines when it happened.

you idolize Geno and yet you seem to know nothing sbout his coaching history and think he’s completely unconcerned with her well-being.
Little harsh. It’s an example of how it’s hard to banter about stuff sometimes. You don’t know me.

Nan she played in two games...is there a deadline to declare a medical redshirt? Is it at the 30% mark?
If she was going to completely red shirt, as Jessica Moore did, she would not be able to play any games at all. If she gets injured before the 30% cutoff, then she can apply for a medical redshirt.

If I were to guess, I would think you focus on the word T-ball in the above highlighted. For me, I focus on team. I wager you understand the impact one pouting player has on the whole-team dynamic. How whenever you walk past them you are on eggshells. If giving Gandy 2 minutes can help the team dynamic, then by all means give her the two minutes and applaud her hustle and cheer for her just like Azzi's three and KK's slash to the hoop. Because at the end of the day it counts towards winning a tough one. And I think you know Geno knows that too.

You are wrong about me and you are wrong about Geno. A pouting player has a better chance in getting kicked off the team than she does in playing.

It amazes me the number of things supposed long time fans get DEAD wrong about Geno in this thread. He has been very vocal and consistent in his core beliefs.

And In all my years of following sports I have not seen a coach who is more keyed to his players emotions and what motivates them, and the extreme importance of morale and cohesion.

I just read that in college football, you can play in up to 4 regular season games, and any preseason or post season games, and still redshirt. If that is true, it means that those rules allow a football player to play in 33 1/3% of regular season games ( usually 12 games) and all post season or preseason games. Since women don't play football, there is a gender inequity in the rules since a football player can play and get paid 5 years and a woman only 4. The reasons behind this stark disparity are often stated to include: 1) Having players learn their skills 2) Having enough practice players 3) Encouraging academic focus and achievement. As to the last one, try not to laugh out loud.....too late!

When you say “ I do think we also have to think about the young people too. They're kids”, you’re saying that Geno isn’t considering that.

That’s fine; not everyone likes Geno.

I think there’s ample evidence to prove that’s a false assessment of him, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

It’s not an opinion that seems consistent with “idolizing him.”
