UConn has played 11 games so far this season. The only game that was close was against Michigan. So I wonder why Gandy has only made it into two games. Many people may say that she is raw. I have been to three games this season and have watched her during pregame drills. The potential is there. And the smile is huge. With our 20, 30 and 40 point wins why isn’t she getting into games? A minute or two will at least have her running up and down the court. Instead of her just high clapping teammates on the bench after a Husky three-pointer is made. She isn’t injured.

No one on this forum knows the answer to your question. And no one is likely to find out the answer since it is highly doubtful that the media is going to ask Auriemma this question. Just consider it a coach's decision because I don't see him being willing to discuss it.

Practices are her games right now. Next year she should start to get a few minutes in the games.

Could be that due to her current level of play, they have decided to red shirt her this year. This will allow her to practice this year and still have four years of eligibility. It makes sense to do this, as if she only plays a few minutes a game, in reality, this would be a wasted year. Their looking long term and want to maximize her potential.

I don't think that works in a non-injury situation since she has already played two games.

Can’t be done, her redshirt is already blown.

No one knows the answer but Geno, but as a coach, having a raw talent like her, it would make sense to let all of her practices be her games so she can develop. Besides, I'm sure her teammates are the best competition she'll face this year. Can you imagine her going up against Sarah, Serah, Jana, and Ice every day in practice? Gandy will be just fine, and next year, if she comes off the bench in garbage time behind Jana, Vukosa, and Strong, she'll be just fine and right in time to be a big "pun intended" contributor to the team in major minutes. IMHO

BobbyJ: are you sure her redshirt is no longer a possibility?
If she has only played in 2 games...and those games were played before New Years
I thought the rules would still allow her a redshirt. I could be way off but I thought a redshirt
would be denied if she played [even one second] in a game the last half of the regular season...or
that same second in a playoff game....and she hasn't done that.

Who should be playing less? Caroline? Allie? Ayanna?

And I'm sure it's being developed in practice.

And the smile is huge.

In the past if you played in games you cpuld only redshirt if you had a season ending injury before X number of games.

Not sure if that’s changed.
@stamfordhusky would prob know

I think that's the medical redshirt rules. I think that there are separate hardship rules. The way the NCAA applies them has always seemed sporadic to me, but that may just be because I don't fully understand them.

There has been talk about using the college FB 4 game rule in hoops, however nothing has happened as of yet.

Yes, playing in even one game at any point ends the possibility of a redshirt unless for medical reasons. Coaches want to see the rule changed but it hasn't been done yet. This article is from Nov. 2023 and they're still waiting.

So she can play a few minutes and folks here can dissect how’s she’s not ready and criticize everything she does wrong ? She’s not needed this season and we have other players that need to develop more and be ready for march when it really matters .just my 2 cents
Geno said in a recent press conference that for people to get minutes, they need not only to be good, but that they need to be better than those who are ahead of them on the roster. There's no doubt that Gandy is "raw" but part of the reason why she is not seeing more minutes is the depth we have among our bigs. I'm sure that was made clear to her while she was being recruited.

This year is a year for Gandy to learn and grow physically and mentally. If she develops into a player who can help us, we will see her on the court, but that's likely not going to happen until next year.

I just looked it up. For her to redshirt, she can't play 1 minute of any games, unless she's injured.

This is what I actually thought when I wrote the post. And, it makes the most sense to not only Gandy but the team.

BobbyJ: Well...I shouldn't be surprised to be wrong...but I am. With the recent rule changes that seem
overall to benefit the rights of players [NIL being the most obvious...portal moves] I think the NCAA ought to
consider a redshirt rule change. In lots of instances it might well benefit a player's basketball improvement but also
her maturity and academic growth.

It is such a stupid rule. In football players can participate in 4 (or 3) games and maintain their redshirt status. Which is overly generous but much of that time is a few reps in blowouts -- not competitive minutes.

I should add: That the moment a basketball player sues this rule will change, especially now with money involved.

Bobbyj, you’re right. Should have researched the rules before posting. “NCAA rules state that any player who enters a game, no matter the time, uses a year of eligibility.”
