Has Blanca signed yet?
Good question. I don’t know quite how the process works for an overseas athlete playing in the Italian professional league. As of this year, athletes no longer sign LOI’s. What Gandy & Kelis signed were NCAA Financial Aid agreements that bind them to UConn for one year only.

I'm so excited for her! Talk about a whirl wind. Hopefully, it all pays off for her
I'm with you! Uconn now has two 6'5" centers for the future.Lara Somfai went to Standford, but Olivia Vucosa is still out there. In the future we can put on the floor two 6'5", a 6'4" and two 6'2"s. The future is really shinning for UCONN the next 4-5 years. JANA, SARAH and GANDY on the floor next year at one time. What a dream scenario! GANDY is in the mold of SARAH, only bigger with the same intensity and skills. Again I say I hope I live long enough to see it happen.Welcome to Uconn GANDY and have a great career!. GO FRESWHMEN!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!

I think that you have conflated Gandy and Blanca. Gandy's height and Blanca's skill set.

Gandy in the mold of Sarah? Bigger....yes. Intensity...maybe. Skills...if Gandy shows Sarah's skills in her first two
games next November I'd be thrilled....but shocked.
Gandy might be in the mold of Jess Moore. Jess was also a little raw coming into UConn. The two have similar height and mobility but from what I've seen this summer, Gandy might have the edge on aggressiveness

Right now, the difference in skills between Gandy and Sarah is as wide as the Pacific Ocean. It’s unlikely Gandy will ever have the same skills, but if she ever reaches 75% of Sarah skill level, it would be a big win for UConn.

In at least her first year, I doubt she will see much playing time. And it’s very unlikely she will even play one minute at the same time that Jana is in the game.

NOTE: ICE BRADY is 6'3" and scored 9 points with 3/5 shooting (one three pointer) , 9 rebounds (three offensive), with
three assists and two blocked shots in 24 minutes of playing time against UNC last night. ALL IN A DAY's WORK!
WELL DONE, ICE !

I think of Gandy as something like Kiah Stokes: a rebounder and defender. Any points are a bonus.
I think this might be the best comparable from past Huskies. Stokes was a low volume high efficiency scorer who relied pretty much on put-backs and layups. I think Gandy at a minimum can score the same way, with some potential for being more than that. I also think Gandy has demonstrated that she might have some pretty good passing instincts, perhaps being better than Kia in that area.

As far as defense and rebounding are concerned, I expect Gandy to be quite good at both, but Kia was probably a 10 on both, maybe Gandy could be a 9 in those categories. Overall if she turns out pretty similar to Kia, that would be terrific, and well ahead of what might be expected based on her HS rankings.

By the way it might be a good trivia question but Kia was that rare player that was never a regular starter in college, but had a long WNBA career. She had Stephanie and/or Brianna ahead of her, making her a super sub her whole career at Uconn.

minor correction Old Husky (from another old husky):

Kia was that rare player that was never a regular starter in college, but had a long WNBA career.

"Has Had" might be more appropriate.

I know that everyone is waiting impatiently to hear that Blanca has signed her financial aid package and will be a Husky next season. Since the coaches can’t discuss Blanca publicly unless and until they have her signed agreement in hand, I will point out that it takes 6-20 days for mail to arrive from Italy to the US…..:(

There’s a thing that’s been used for many years called a fax machine that is very effective. ;)

Yes I know, and nowadays you can pdf a document via email. I’m just trying to put a somewhat positive spin on an otherwise concerning lack of information.

From the few videos I have seen, this assessment is spot on. Quick feet, great arm length, and exceptionally aggressive on defense. The only defensive difference I have seen is a nit, but an important one. Kiah Stokes was outstanding in her ability to keep her arms up and not slap down on the ball. Paricularly for a center, Strokes rarely drew fouls when attempting to block shots. The past few years, we have had several bigs, including Jana and Ayanna, that tend to slap down and draw unnecessary fouls. Hopefully Gandy will model herself after Stokes.

It's like Bill Russell used to say: don't swat the ball, just tap it up so you can grab it.

Gandy will hopefully make another big leap in her basketball growth this coming season..........at this point, she can rebound, block shots and runs the floor well but has limited offensive skills which will hopefully be developed in the coming months and years.....a baby hook and midrange jump shot will turn her into the two-way weapon that UConn needs.....

Since a NLOI is really not necessary, all she really needs to do is sign her financial aid docs prior to starting classes. Although schools usually check out the academic records while deciding whether to offer, maybe there’s some delay on that end.

Kiah is one of the best natural shot blockers I have ever seen, male or female.....her impeccable timing is not something that can be taught but the shot blocking form you mentioned certainly is.....

The midrange jumpshot is the real dividing line between good and great. It's what Iriafen added to her game last season and it had an impact. And I love a good baby-hook. So few players do this anymore.

the baby hook is an effective and fairly easy shot to learn for a 6'5" post.........I'm hopeful that Geno and the other UConn coaches have advised her to work on it this season.....

One additional issue. If a student athlete is under the age of 21, which Blanca is, a parent or guardian must also sign the financial aid form. I assume that means getting signatures from Blanca in Italy and one of her parents in Ecuador?

I hope so too. Liv and Aaliyah and Dorka never seemed to use it if they learned it. But both Ice and Jana have scored on hook shots already this season.
