She was. Probably based on practices. When things got tough in games, he did put her in though.Wasn't she a regular occupant of the "dog-house" her first couple of years

Jana never played high school basketball, it was always international basketball, two different types of play. She played a more physical type of basketball compared to high school. Nika had problems when she initially played, so did Anna. Jana was taught to stay down low in the post for most of her basketball career. One asset Gandy has is she always is moving to the ball. In many ways Jana could take a lesson. Both take up a lot of space down low but Gandy moves to where the ball is going. Jana tends to get fixed on a spot and while she owns this real estate, it sometimes appears that she is still recovering from last year's injury and isn't quick to the ball. I can see Gandy getting minutes as a frosh when defense and rebounding are needed in short bursts.
Maybe, 10 feet?? I like to expand my and Gandy's Horizons.Gandy is a true post player. I doubt she’ll ever shoot from beyond 5 ft. Next year Jana might play a bit at the 4 if Gandy is in the game.
Maybe on the opening tapEnd of 2024 stats for Gandy (7 games): 20.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1 assist, 2.1 blocks. Next game is tomorrow

I'm from N.J., so I just have to root for this young lady!

Is there video? Sounds like an awesome game.Gill St Bernard’s played the country’s #3 ranked team Morris Catholic (#1 in NJ, obviously) and lost 53-65. Gandy had 15 points, 10 reb, 2 assists, a block, and a steal. She could have had more points but was only 3-7 from the free throw line. Morris Catholic’s 6-3 center, Morgan Fulston, had 0 points, 6 reb, and no trips to the free throw line

The way basketball positions are evolving, Gandy might become the next unicorn. We shall see. She is still raw and depending on the coaching and training that she goes through over the next few months and years, who knows. We might see Gandy playing as a Wing (3) at some point. Who knows. It all just depends on the development of Gandy and the rest of the team and the vision of the coaching staff.Gandy is a true post player. I doubt she’ll ever shoot from beyond 5 ft. Those stats for Gandy are pretty good in isolation, but taken in context and with a closer look are even better. First they were against a very good team, but even more so, she completely dominated her 6-3 C opponent. That bodes well for how she could do against the kind of bigger and more talented C's she will face in college.Gill St Bernard’s played the country’s #3 ranked team Morris Catholic (#1 in NJ, obviously) and lost 53-65. I am not sure this means anything in terms of how she will do in college. For perspective, Gandyis already 19 years old, older than Sarah Strong in fact, and she was playing against an inexperienced player who is three years younger than her. That player typically does not score much against anyone, having scored as many as 10 points only once all season despite having had a height advantage in almost every game. Also it appears she is rarely involved in any offense in the paint, as she has shot only two free throws for the entire season. Those stats for Gandy are pretty good in isolation, but taken in context and with a closer look are even better. I agree. And that's how these big kids get overrated based on stats against inferior competition in HS and then are expected to be stars when they get to college. Remember DeBerry?I am not sure this means anything in terms of how she will do in college. I am not saying that Gandy might not turn out to be good player, only that for performance against this sophomore doesn’t really tell us anything.
I think the point of @HuskyNan ’s post of the Morris Catholic game was to show how Gandy does against a really good team (#3 in the country), not the particular matchup against one player. For a direct measure of Gandy’s ability, all we have so far is our own eyeball assessment of how she moves on the court. Stats against weaker teams don’t tell us much. But this game gives us slightly more useful stats. Gandy’s line in this game was 15, 10, 2, 1, 1. But everything is still guesswork for now. The one thing I cling to is that she seems to be very coachable.I am not sure this means anything in terms of how she will do in college. Based on stats? How does this make any sense when you've never seen the 6-3 opponent play and she's obviously less developed than Gandy and 3 years younger? Those stats for Gandy are pretty good in isolation, but taken in context and with a closer look are even better. You're talking to a crowd that expects Jana, a freshman, and Ice, a sophomore, to dominate against all comersBased on stats? How does this make any sense when you've never seen the 6-3 opponent play and she's obviously less developed than Gandy and 3 years younger?
And if they don't then it becomes a recruiting failure because, after all, the stats and HS rankings guarantee they should be great. You're talking to a crowd that expects Jana, a freshman, and Ice, a sophomore, to dominate against all comers
Still, in looking at Gandy's stats, she's remarkably consistent, scoring 11,21,18,25,20,26,26 against her opponents. Rebounds 12,5,10,12,8,15,16. (the 5 was against #2 in NJ Rutgers Prep) To me that indicates she gives her best effort every game, regardless of opponents.
To be fair to Gandy, and the girls going to other top programs, unless they play in one of the better AAU programs or a high school that recruits, like a Montverde or IMG, their high school competition is not going to be much of a challenge for them. I do look for things like consistency, effort, and how their fundamentals improve while I watch them. For Gandy, I give those things a thumbs up. She also brings athleticism to the center position - she and Jana could be quite the twin towers down the road. And if they don't then it becomes a recruiting failure because, after all, the stats and HS rankings guarantee they should be great.
Exactly, and this is misunderstood by many fans. The summer circuits, Nike, Adidas, UA etc. are the best HS age competition in the world. The international teams that USA BB competes against during the summer are a noticeable step below these US summer leagues. There are scattered individual players that are widely recruited but the depth of talent is just lower. That's why El Alfy looked so good in those summer tournaments and looks fairly average against this college competition. She has to get a lot quicker and play a lot smarter. I like that Auriemma is using limited PT to force both El Alfy and Brady to work and improve their games. He won't risk losing a game OOC, no matter what he tells the media, to provide OJT. As he says, 'force me to play you' or you'll have to wait. These aren't practice games. I also think you're correct about Gandy's compete level. To be fair to Gandy, and the girls going to other top programs, unless they play in one of the better AAU programs or a high school that recruits, like a Montverde or IMG, their high school competition is not going to be much of a challenge for them. If UConn wants to really compete against UCLA, South Carolina and other teams with big frontcourts they will need Jana to step up.........the only way that is happening is if she gets more minutes per game during conference play......if at that point she hasn't progressed than the small line up will have to suffice for this season......Exactly, and this is misunderstood by many fans.
