I guess that's why Burton last year and
Smiley this year are at the edge at 250 lbs. They can drop back in coverage as big line backers or rush like a blitzing line backer . I get it and it makes sense.
Pretty certain Smiley was out for the UAB game. That would not be unrelated to UAB's QB's ability to scramble, as his replacements are much larger and less mobile.

Duke’s offense will be a challenge but I also don’t expect them to shut down UConn’s passing offense.

Duke is mid-tier ACC, maybe a top 40 team and rightfully favored by 9. But if UConn can avoid turnovers & force 1 or 2, this is a very winnable home game.
I wouldn’t label Duke as mid tier in the ACC this season. If they can beat Virginia they have a decent chance to win the ACC.

-> UConn’s Joe Fagnano and Duke’s Darian Mensah are both among the best in the nation in every major statistical category through 10 weeks as Fagnano looks for his fifth win at home and Mensah bids to lead the Blue Devils to bowl eligibility.

It will be a tall task for the Huskies’ defense to stop the Duke redshirt-sophomore, who was regarded as one of the best transfer portal additions after starring at Tulane last year and is finding just as much success in Durham. <-

-> “I think that this quarterback (Mensah) is outstanding in the pocket, finding passing lanes, moving around in the pocket and still keeping his eyes down the field,” UConn coach Jim Mora said. “And then they’ve got a good group of receivers, so they’re playing with a high level of confidence right now. When a quarterback can find a rhythm because his offensive line and his backs, and his tight ends who are also involved in pass protection, are doing a good job for him, then that just builds confidence.” <-

I think the whole ACC is a mid tier teams compared to P2. Currently SEC is so deep coaches are getting fired for only having a 500 record. Those “mid tier” SEC teams would dominate the ACC. To think UVA could be the representative for the CFP for ACC tells you all you need to know about the level of play in the ACC.

I doubt it… The "horde" is a shell of its former self across the board. Joe Arruda from the Courant was there - not sure where the other person was from. I'm sure WBB playing tonight in Annapolis drew bodies away. Heck if the other person was from Hearst that is pretty much all the print media in CT.
Joe Zone maybe? Sounds like his voice in the background. Does he go to pressers?

Yup, but I remember that day when Cincinnati came into the Rent on a brutally cold Senior Day with UConn needing a win to go bowling. The Cincinnati coaches including Mr. Weist, wore short sleeve summer shirts. UConn came out bundled to the tops of their helmets and threw a turd in the punch bowl with HCPP grinding his teeth and looking at his shoes in frustration.

Gotta think that day is in our distant past. But it is still a nightmare that recurs on occasion.

Liberty and Houston are not cold weather schools. Cincy is. And that game is ancient history.

Love you guys... i don't share the hope but will be happy in the (very very) off chance we pull this thing off.
Duke is way better than us, PERIOD.

Doesn't mean they are guaranteed to win, as we've seen in CFB this year.
Thankfully, the game is played on the field and not on the message boards. Anything can happen on gameday. As a Jets fan, you seem to have a lot of doom and gloom. I like our chances as in every game UConn has been in it till the end

not doom, just a realist.
I am also hoping for the best outcome.

Yes I understand my reply was more towards I understood the theory of 335. It makes sense the type of players MB is recruiting.

This post has me questioning reality, haha. I could've sworn I saw him out there because I thought there were a couple different stoppages for him when he was down on the field. But then I checked the official box score from The American and didn't see him listed. So I checked ESPN's game log and didn't see him listed for either the BC, Rice or UAB games, even though I knew he played in at least the BC game.

I found 2 sites that said he played against both BC and UAB but didn't record a tackle: sports-reference and something I had never heard of called statmuse. I think this is accurate, like I said I thought I remembered seeing him out there against UAB. But I may be wrong. I could've sworn I heard the announcers call a sack for Wright last week when it was actually awarded to Harris. So maybe they just botched who was down on the field a couple times too

Hehehe. Sorry, did not mean to exceed your memory capacity. But the physics, physiology and psychology involved have not changed in 20 years.

This is a classic trap game for Duke. They are still basking in the Clemson win. Playing at the Rent. Looking forward to Virginia and a possible ACC championship. This is a perfect setup.

I am quite sure Smiley played. I seem to remember him being injured and coming off the field against UAB.

Smiley went down in first half, don't think he got back

Manny Diaz about to be on College Sports Today on SXM radio

Eyerore,

Let me break it down in simple terms for you.

Different era, different coaches, different weather.

Same physics, same physiology, same psychology. Add the fact that this UConn team is bipolar. We do not know which team will show up even if the weather is beautiful. So, nice try. My point stands and your infantile attempt at making an issue out of nothing is an epic fail.

It seems like this has happened a few times. He tries to give it a go but can't.

My thought has been something is not right with him. I think the DL would look different with him out there, but it does show how thin the margins are with our limited depth.

IIRC, I think he got hurt — ankle — during the BC game. I don’t think he’s played much (if at all) since then.
