GENERAL COMMENTS:

It was great to see Azzi Fudd get her sea legs under her and have a break-out come-back game. That only bodes well for UConn in the future. I don't think that Azzi just yet breaks into the starting lineup. I think Geno will want to see some consistency in her play before he makes a change to the starting line-up. I think her minutes will continue to increase until he is confident to make that change. That being said, I think Geno will go with the same starters and he will continue bringing Azzi in off the bench for significant minutes. Keep in mind...soon we will be seeing the return of Ayanna Patterson and Aubrey Griffin both of whom will also need minutes to establish their comebacks. I will be posting this game analysis as well as Saturday's game against Louisville this weekend. I will be going to Chile to teach martial arts seminars and to conduct Blackbelt and Master tests. I will be leaving on Monday the 2nd and returning on Monday the 9th. Thank God my wife will be recording the games for me...because I will have little time while I am in Chile to be scouring the internet trying to find a feed for the game.

Holy Cross Is not going to be an exciting team to watch. They average 62 points per game, they turn the ball over 16.2 times per game. One bright spot is they have played some pretty good defense so far this year forcing 16 turnovers with about 8 steals per game, but they haven't faced anybody like UConn. They average about 7 three-pointers per game. They are not that good of a rebounding team only grabbing 32.1 rebounds per game.

It appears due to injuries that Holy Cross is somewhat depleted and as a result, will be playing a 4-guard line-up against UConn. They have a junior-laden starting line-up made up of 4 juniors and one sophomore. They will start: Simone Foreman 5'9" Junior, guard; Kaitlyn Flanagan 5'8"
Junior, guard; Kendall Eddy 5'7" Sophomore, guard; Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly 6'0" Junior, guard; Meg Cahalan 6'2' Junior, forward. Lindsay Berger seems to be out of the line-up...she may be hurt. She is a big piece of their team she is a 6'2" forward who averages 9.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and they will miss her if she is not playing against UConn.

UConn should win this game easily and it will be an opportunity for everyone to play. Geno may use the second half to work on some sets in order to get ready to play Louisville on Saturday

PLAYER ANALYSIS:

Ice Brady 6'3", forward vs. Meg Cahalan, 6'2", forward
- Meg averages 1l.l points, 4.3 rebounds per game. Ironically she is Holy Cross' best three-point shooter making 1.86 threes per game. She can also be somewhat of a facilitator tied for second on her team and averaging 1.6 assists per game. Ice is currently averaging 6.3 points. 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. With this line-up Holy Cross may try to run against UConn...however, I am not sure how successful that would be as Geno has a lot of options where he could go small and run with just about anyone in the country. If Geno decides to stay big at this position he could always bring in 6'5" Jana El-Alfy. This would be extremely challenging for Holy Cross and I would expect our post-players to have a very good day. Given Ice's size and agility around the basket and with Jana waiting in the wings to come into the game, Holy Cross will have much difficulty in the post. ADVANTAGE UCONN

Sarah Strong 6'2", forward vs. Simone Foreman, 5'9", guard
- Simone is Holy Cross' most consistent player averaging 14 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.0 three-pointers. Sarah will have a size advantage on Simone and Sarah's numbers thus far in her rookie season are fantastic. She is averaging 14.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 steals and is averaging 1.3 three-pointers. This match-up by the numbers looks to be intriguing but it would appear that Sarah will prove to be too big, too strong, and too talented. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Paige Bueckers 6'0, guard vs. Kaitlyn Flanagan, 5'8" guard
- Kaitlyn is Holy Cross' 2nd option for scoring and she is their floor leader. She averages 11.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.6 steals, and averages one three-pointer per game. Kaitlyn will have her hands full with All-American Paige Bueckers. Paige has set the pace for UConn this season averaging: 22 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 2.2 three-pointers per game. Paige will probably only play slightly more than 20 minutes in this one but it will be good enough:
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Kaitlyn Chen 5'9", guard vs. Kendall Eddy 5'7", guard
- Kendall has broken into the starting line-up probably due to injuries. Kendall has started in the last two games. She is averaging 9.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 three-pointers per game. Kaitlyn still seems to be struggling to find her stride but her year-to-date stats nevertheless match up comparatively with Kendall's. Kaitlyn is averaging 6.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. While statistically, Kendall may average more points per game...the competition level that Kendall has faced is not comparable to what UConn has played so far this year. However, I think Kendall may end up being one of the bright spots for Holy Cross in this one. ADVANTAGE - HOLY CROSS

Ashlynn Shade, 5'10", guard vs. Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly - 6'0", guard - Mary-Elizabeth has started the last 5 games for Holy Cross. She is averaging 5.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1 three-pointer per game. While Ashlynn too has not hit her last season stride she has played exceptionally well, playing the third most minutes on the team while only turning the ball over .67 times per game. Her game stats are respectable as she averages 7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.0 steals, and hits on 1.3 three-pointers per game. Ashlynn will play Mary-Elizabeth tough on the defensive end and she will drive Mary-Elizabeth crazy with her constant movement. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

BENCH:

UConn's bench is extremely deep this year and with Azzi starting to round up to form...Geno can afford to go deep into his bench without losing too much. UConn will bring 28.6 points and 16.3 rebounds off the bench not to mention size and talent advantage. Unless some of Holy Cross' unavailable players become available, With only Simone Lewis, Jamie Bachman and Lauren Huber available Holy Cross will only be able to bring 5.9 points and 7.3 rebounds off the bench. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

COACHING:

Two hall-of-fame coaches and a cracker-jack coaching staff...will pretty much ensure that there will be precious few if any errors from the staff.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

INTANGIBLES:

The game will be played at Gampel in front of the students. The team will be looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd. UConn is too big, too talented and seasoned to let this one get away from them. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

UConn - 95
Holy Cross - 44
MOV - 51

Thank you again sensei @cferraro04! As always, this is very appreciated. I now know much more about Holy Cross thanks to the analysis you have provided.

The primary question for me is what you address in the first paragraph, namely whether Azzi will be a starter right away or whether Geno hold her back a little longer, perhaps out of an overabundance of caution. This question will be settled just before the opening tip. I am eager to see what his decision on this is.

Enjoy your trip!

Only one slight correction for you, it's Kaitlyn Chen not Caitlyn. Enjoy your trip and keep up the good work.

I didn't finish my post. To continue, this should be a buffet for the whole team, everybody eats. I expect that this game ASHLYNN will break out and be like the ASHLYNN at the end of last year. She is too good a player . Right now I say her defense is of the highest peak of her career so far. JANA should dominate the boards and PAIGE will do her PAIGE thing as always and the game will be a classic of UCONN dominance. GO FRESHMEN!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!.

thanks, MSGRET...I will correct in the next analysis which I will have to put up on the board tomorrow since I am leaving for a week out of the country. I hope that: 1. folks here will keep the analysis thread active and high up on the page by posting on it...which I think won't be a problem given what Louisville brings. 2. I hope that my prognostication can be carried over to the prognostication thread as I will be unable to copy it over there. Thanks in advance for your help.

One other correction. Chen is FAR better than Eddy. It’s a huge disparity in favor of Chen.
Not having seen Eddy play...I had to rely on what is on paper...I understand that statistics are static and not fluid and that statistics are two-dimensional data...which doesn't consider team dynamics, break-out games, slumps, coaching decisions with regards to minutes played, level of competition each team has played, playing for a new team, and getting used to the system and their role and the effect returning players from both teams will have a single game. I may have done Kaitlyn a disservice in this particular match-up and in this case, I hope I am proven wrong. Additionally, I think these match-ups will not endure through this game as I think Geno will substitute quite liberally in this one.

How is this for on paper. Chen was an honorable mention all-American last season.

I have a feeling that Azzi will start and that Geno will work on some sets with her and Paige to create some unstoppable situs for future opponents.

Ashlynn was pretty invisible the other night but she and especially KK will be required to run after Hidalgo in the upcoming ND game...Their last 2 games (losses) showed that a quick guard whose primary assignment is harassing her can disrupt the ND offense.

Don't disagree that Ashlynn was low on stats the last game, but when I watched it again, its no wonder Geno gives her so many minutes. I would net it out by saying she makes the other team expend more energy. Always at top speed, plays strong defense, good passer, and makes the other team play up on her, trying to take away her 3-pointer (i.e. opening up shots for other UConn guards). There ought to be a stat called "Geno minutes" to rate how coach feels the players are performing.

Definitely agree that Ash and KK have an important role this year, especially in the 'tougher' games. Kudos to Geno to know when to use them. Will be fun to see these chess matches in their future.

Don't know if Azzi with start. She probably won't in order to keep her feeling well and rested. But it's not because Chen is a better option. In crunch time, Azzi will be playing and Chen sitting.
With all of Geno's guard options, he really needn't play anyone in particular. Coach used 3 guards at the end of the Old Miss game.

I don’t agree with that analysis.

I think Geno wants two with point guard skills on the court. KK is the one that could potentially sneak her way into the starting lineup or crunch time. But she has not done enough to supplant Chen yet this season.

In my opinion, Shade will sit for Azzi. Azzi will start over shade at some point. Azzi will play crunch time for shade at some point. I am not sure it happens against Holy Cross. But why wait?

I just checked the NCAA women's Division 1 stats (from 7days ago, i.e. rated once a week on
Mondays I believe). KK Arnold was #1 on the Assists to Turnover ratio at 9.50! A misprint???
Maybe not. She has limited minutes, but when she is in there her passes are on target! BTW,
UCONN as a team is ranked #2 in A/TO ratio at 1.87, TCU was # 1 at 1.97. Others on the
Assist to T.O. list: Sarah Strong, tied at #13 at 3.43 and someone called BUCKETS at 3.38 at # 15.
These things can change a lot early in the season due to limited sample size and strength of
the opposition. I just looked up the stats due to the comment in the thread that " KK is one
that could potentially sneak her way into the starting lineup " see above and thread # 15 above.

This is the first time in 3 years that GENO has had a full team to choose from to put on the floor. Last year he only had 7 players he could count on, so his choices were dictated by circumstance. All the producing players will get their share of playing time. In reference to ASHLYNN, she has been a defensive whirl-wind of non-stop defense. In my book that counts A LOT.The whole team is feeling it's way and it'll work itself out. GO FRESHMEN!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!

.-.
The interesting thought is maybe KK and Azzi are sort of a package deal when it comes to starting. Here is why I think so. KK has yet to establish her scoring but if Azzi comes into the starting line up, you don't need Chen's scoring in the starting line up. Therefore, one could put Azzi in the starting line up and also bring KK for defense and pushing the ball.

Then Chen and Ash move to the second line.

I'm beginning to think the March starting line up will be KK, Azzi, Paige, Strong, and Jana.

huskyd- - - Just IMHO but if Azzi does start vs Holy Cross it will be for Ashlynn not Chen!

Arnold - A/TO is at 19/2 - 9.5
Strong - A/TO is at 24/7 - 3.43
Bueckers - A/TO is at 27/8 - 3.38
Chen - A/TO is at 23/12 - 1.92

Kendall Eddy, a sophomore, is #32 in white. This is from last week.

Eddy is averaging 9.9 PPG on 39% shooting. Has 11 assists versus 20 turnovers. She is only starting because a regular starter, Lindsay Berger, got hurt.

huskyd- - - Just IMHO but if Azzi does start vs Holy Cross it will be for Ashlynn not Chen!
Agree, RV. I meant in a situation that needs some scoring, Azzi is the logical choice. Chen and Ash are two different players, and Geno doesn't use Ash to play the one.
PS/I'd like to see some more point production from Ash than we've seen lately.
Wait! Hold the presses. You meant Geno would have Chen running the one with Azzi and Paige both on the court? Yes. He's already done that: let Chen distribute to the shooters, etc. No use for Ash in that situation.

.-.
I don't think Geno brings Chen to UCONN to sit on the bench. She is a proven player and the season is young. Reminds me of Kia Nurse as a Freshman supplanting Saniya Chong, a popular Sophomore (if I recall correctly) and prolific scorer, as a starter three games into the season. The naysayers didn't let up until Kia graduated. Everyone has their favorites but if Chen is starting, Geno must have his reasons.
