Purvis was a disappointment compared to many peoples expectations. He was built up just like Cole is now was my point.
Co-signed. He didn't suck...but when the bar is set somewhere between the talent of Ray and Michael Jordan courtesy of Mr Ollie...he didn't come anywhere near the hype.

I'm cautiously optimistic on Cole but the Big East ain't the MEAC so I have tempered expectations. Not looking for 20ppg, just some solid leadership.

I'll never understand people acting like Purvis wasn't good
Probably just depends upon how you are defining good.

The narrative on this board is that the AAC is a total garbage conference, and Rodney didn’t make an all AAC team in his 3 years, so....

Yup. If he stays 4 years he could have 80+ wins under his belt.
Here are the average # of wins for our point guards since 1990.

Smitty - 22
KO - 23
Doron - 29
Khalid - 30, with a championship
Taliek - 23, with a championship
M Williams - 26
Kemba - 27 with a championship
Shabazz - 26 with 2 championships

Not dissing Gaffney in the least but he has a long ways to go to approach the success of the players mentioned. Just like the team has a long ways to go to be in the same ball park. I don't think many younger fans realize how good we were for 25 years. We were top 10 for most of those years. JC was one heckuva coach.

I think me and you see wins differently. Kemba was a part of more than 27 wins. I think you know what i meant but want to disagree just because.

We lost one of the best defensive duo’s ever in Gilbert and Vital , PT at guard will somewhat be determined by
who can get after it the best . As ineffective as Gilbert was at PG Hurley had him on the floor at critical times just because he could disrupt.

Tbh, if you look at the best 2 backcourt defenders in the team the past 20 years, it's not even clear that Gilbert and Vital were above average.

Here's my list of the top 2 backcourt defenders on the team each year(some may disagree):

2001 - 2003: Talik, Gordon
2004 - 2006: Marcus Williams, Denham (for my money this is the only group Gilbert and Vital are definitively better than defensively)
2007 - 2008: Dyson, Price
2009 - 2010: Dyson, Kemba
2011: Kemba, Shabazz
2012 - 2014: Bazz, Boat
2015: Boat, Purvis
2016: Jalen Adams, Purvis
2017 - last year: Gilbert, Vital

I never really got the hullaballoo with AGs defense tbh. Yeah he pressured the ball well, but it always seemed to me that he got scored over at the rim a lot because of his height.

He wasn't BAD at.defense like Bouk or anythong. Just not great

Greatly exaggerated. He was fine, pesky, but he got beat by bigger guards constantly.

He was a solid on ball defender and at times was really good at moving his feet, getting pressure on guys without fouling, disrupting plays etc. But the advanced stats show he wasn’t a great defender. Per last seasons team stats, he was 6th in defensive rating, 4th in defensive win shares, and 7th in DBPM. I’ll give you that it felt like at times he was smothering dudes and frustrating players, but best duo ever? Come on now... and to me, duo is any two players, not just back court. That list would include Emeka, Hasheem, etc etc.

Unless I'm confused, I think the discussion was about best backcourt defensive duos.

That may have been what the OP was going for, but was not what he said. He called Gilbert/Vital one of the best defensive duos ever
