Gabby on Geno

Did Gabby say her and Paige are 10-12 years apart? Because if I'm not mistaken they are only 5 years difference in age.

Nice quote about Geno from Gabby. I did do a double take when Gabby talked about her and Paige being "10, 12 years apart." I thought I had lost track of time even more than I expected, lol. Biologically speaking, it's only 5 years, though it's more of you mark time from one player's rookie year to the other's (6 years different between rookie UConn years, 7 years between rookie WNBA years).

I read one time where Gabby can solve a Rubik's cube in under 30 seconds, but looks like she misfired on that age gap...!

They were born in the fall of 1996 and 2001. They left UConn in 2018 and 2025.

7 year difference in graduating year, 5 year age difference. The 2 year discrepancy in year graduated vs. actual age difference is that Paige stayed 5 years to Gabby 4 years and Paige turned 19 during her freshman year, so she was a year older than most college freshman.

I am surprised she, and others, use the word hate. Is that a result of his sarcasm? Or the sensitive nature of the relationship? Watching the Tour de France, there are very tough coaches and circumstances but "hate" is never part of the dialog. Is it just a figure of speech or something deeper about American sports?

I read her use of the word "hate" as being more in the casual/colloquial way of using it. As opposed to the literature/academic/law enforcement version.

Here the players are at UConn, playing basketball at a level that is not just passion, but also obligation and labor. They spend so many hours a week playing, practicing, and thinking about the sport that it's more like a job. And their "boss" is a stern taskmaster to say the least, and one who won't hesitate to criticize their work. And it's probably the most strain they've been under, physically, in their entire young lives. It's not easy psychologically either, with all the pressure and competition for your spot in the lineup.

Some negative emotions about parts of the process are to be expected, IMO.

In fact, it’s one of the head coach’s roles to be a lightning rod for those emotions, to clear them out of the way so the players can focus positive emotions on each other.

It's just that the CoViD year seemed like 5 years...:(:(
