Is there another game/activity that can drive you more in to self-doubt than golf?

No defense, no shot clock and no teammates to blame. Just you , the ball and a club.

I was out earlier today and was trying out new golf balls I got as a birthday gift- Taylor Made Pentas. Nice golf ball and a better golf ball than I usually play.

Problem is the ball seems to have a dead spot on swings where I'm going 75%-80%.

I have a mixed bag of clubs- Nike Machspeed Square driver, Adams 16 and 19 degree hybrids, Wilson Ci7 irons and Titliest Vokey wedges. Across the board on my iron play the ball seemed normal distance wise, and it seemed to work good on chips and putts. But any time I tried to feather an iron in to the green, it'd come up 10 yards short.

Over the past few years I've played

Taylor Made Pentas
Nike One Tour
Nike One Tour D
Nike One Speed
Bridgestone e5, e6, 37
Bridgestone 330
Bridgestone 330s

and out of all of them, the Taylor Made's are the only ones that do it. Happened with my Wilson irons and my Vokey wedges so I'm leaning towards it being the golf ball and not the club.

Irritating. I'm seriously contemplating donated the rest of the golf balls to a friend and starting from scratch.

You should save them to throw at your new pit bull when you are training it to be properly socialized. Then feed them to it, like croutons in the human body part salad that comprises the major part of their diet.

Have you tried the Titleist Pro V1's? It may be the golf ball or not but I've been shooting 3-4 strokes better with these than the Titleist NSX Tour, Callaways and Taylor Mades.

if your swing speed isnt over 105, penta's will go nowhere.

i bought a sleeve when they came out.....never again.

Always used the ProV1's and X's but as I grow old and swing is slowing I have found others which have better results. Most recently the T-M RocketBallz are a nice combination of distance and spin around the green for me. I know that's "highly unusal" for a guy who has the R9 driver and 5 wood along with a Rocketballz 19 and 25 degree hybrids and R7XD irons all down to the Serah Williams, the Rossa Ghost to boot!...........really never like the TM balls until this........try it Chin.....

F'en golf - drives me crazy. I never get why I can't be better at it. So this year decided to hold off on the greens fee's to suck cluelessly and invested in a 2 day golf camp up at Mt. Snow. I figured that even if I continue sucking, I'd rather know why and work on it versus blindly sucking, for peace of mind. Have since golfed one of the better rounds of my long career of sucking.

Hard to believe that any ball would be 10 yds short. If it is a high iron you are hitting that is short you may be coming over the top a bit or casting the shorter shafted irons. What does your divit look like?

No, I'm talking shots square in the middle of the grooves with a divot the size of a dollar bill starting right where club impacts ball. It's like the ball goes water-logged.

Just hit one more club. Getting old sucks.

Hi Chin,

You may want to try the Sirixon Z star X. I'm a 7 handicap that has played Pro-V 1's for years. I switched over about a month ago and found these balls to just as long with great control around the greens. The big difference is in the reduced driver side spin. I normally drew the ball about 10 yards with the driver, but was always a hairsbreadth away from a hook. These balls allow me to consistently hit a virtually straight ball and my "hook" swing is now a draw.

Danzz hit it right on head about the shorter irons. I have a tendency to de-cellerate and cast my wedges causing the shot to be weak and right.

If I could putt, chip and had better course management; I'd be pretty good.

You absolutely need to match the ball to yourself. Clubhead speed, launch angle, desired ball flight... all governed by you, the club and the ball. I've switched to a ball I like to putt with, although I've been re-testing putters so it may not last. Easiest way to save a few shots for me. Luckily it's also playable for chipping, irons, and off-the-tee. I'm not young enough to make it spin backward or go 300yds (or even 250). I've been mostly using Srixon Soft Feel (? may not be the real name), or Bridgestone E-5. Also OK with Titleist, but I don't usually buy them. Tried the Penta, but it didn't much for me either. I have some new 330's, but haven't settled in enough to try them.

Jay Moreli is a top flight teacher and a great guy. Jay gave me a copy of his book which is also very good. The Mt. Snow golf school has a oustanding reputation, excellent choice and good luck.
