I sort of agree with Hawk on this. Lots of schools make the mistake of hiring the successful coach’s assistant or former player and it rarely works out. Roy at UNC was probably the best example but he was also a proven commodity who had won the Championship at Kansas. Ollie is probably more the rule than the exception. As the old coach’s talent leaves he struggles to replace them.

More likely he poorly judged the role of a head coach in recruiting. Inexperience.
I think you and Huskylife hit the nail on the head. I think when he won the championship, KO thought he was already at the level of Izzo, K, Cal etc and that enough top recruits would basically come to him. There are no short cuts to success, and he needed a lot more years of experience, AAU relationships etc. He needed to embrace the grind and seemingly hasn't had much interest in that.

Further evidence that "literally" may be the most overused and least understood word in the English language.

literally

[lit-er-uh-lee]
adverb
1.in the literal or strict sense: She failed to grasp the metaphor andinterpreted the poem literally.
What does the word mean literally?
2. in a literal manner; word for word:
to translate literally.
3. actually; without exaggeration or inaccuracy:

You want to pack XL and Gampel? you make the people happy. who is literally everyone clamoring for? Danny Hurley.

@SirHypeAlot is suggesting that he is not exaggerating, exactly everyone is clamoring for Danny Hurley.

It is a correct usage of the word.

Roy won at Kansas? Asa player right? Never as a coach.

Huh?
I'm promise not "clamoring" for Danny Hurley.
I think I'd have to qualify as a component part of "everyone."
Doesn't that alone make the usage incorrect, even if everyone else is clamoring for Danny Hurley, let alone anybody else not clamoring?
And, what if I'm non-clamoringly or partially in favor of him? Or ambivalent or lukewarm, or even against him?

That makes his argument wrong, not his word choice.

---Other candidates: (originally posted above)

Jeff Capel - didn't light the world on fire at Oklahoma:

Season Team Overall Conference Standing Postseason
VCU Rams
(Colonial Athletic Association) (2002–2006)
2002–03 VCU 18–10 12–6 T–2nd
2003–04 VCU 23–8 14–4 1st NCAA Round of 64
2004–05 VCU 19–13 13–5 T–2nd NIT Opening Round
2005–06 VCU 19–10 11–7 5th
VCU: 79–41 (.658) 50–22 (.694)

Oklahoma Sooners (Big 12 Conference) (2006–2011)
2006–07 Oklahoma 16–15 6–10 T–7th
2007–08 Oklahoma 23–12 9–7 T–4th NCAA Round of 32
2008–09 Oklahoma 30–6 13–3 2nd NCAA Elite Eight
2009–10 Oklahoma 0–18* 0–12* T-11th
2010–11 Oklahoma 14–18 5–11 8th
Oklahoma: 83–69* (.546) 33-43* (.434)

Plus, there was speculation that it might be related to media reports that Tiny Gallon had received an impermissible extra benefit from Merrill Lynch employee and this was confirmed when subsequently released phone records tied him and Taliaferro and the NCAA confirmed it was investigating. In August 2011, Oklahoma admitted that Taliaferro had committed 2 NCAA violations in the Gallon case; Capel was not implicated in the violations. Now he's associate head coach at Duke and we find out that the FBI is looking into that program. I'd definitely ask for an explanation and have a get out of jail free card inserted into his contract in the event that he's implicated in the Duke scandal (just feels good to type that.)

All the Hurley talk doesn't even get me to the edge yet. Definitely hold mode with him as it relates to UConn. I desperately want to see how this year plays out for him. At this point I would take Ollie and opt for another year over Hurley.

Now if someone were to start improvising and being a bit more creative with a search...that is different.

Say:

Head Coach: Isaac Chew
Assistant Coach: Ulric Maligi

That would be an interesting team.

I'd take Thad Matta in a heartbeat if he was feeling healthy.

Chew & Maligi. Could be a dynamic pair. Somewhere...

Matta can coach though. Looks like could be Ole Miss? No?

His health is a huge question mark though. I don't think we can afford to roll the dice on that one
