"Dangerfield shrugged off the fact that of all the great guards who have slipped on a UConn jersey, none of them accomplished what Dangerfield did on Friday by handing out nine assists while going 6 of 7 from 3-point range. Not Sue Bird, not Diana Taurasi, not Jen Rizzotti, not Moriah Jefferson.

“You have to pick your poison,” Dangerfield said. “They couldn’t stop anybody down low and they were leaving people open on the 3-point line as well so it was pretty much a game for everybody.”

Sophomore guard Crystal Dangerfield continues to open eyes for No. 1 UConn

“Looking at her, she is a different looking basketball player from Year 1 to Year 2,” DePaul coach Doug Bruno said. “She buckled herself down, (willed) herself to have a great sophomore year, she has done the work and put herself in the position to be another one of the great point guards they have had at that size.”

And here is Doyle's version of Crystal post DePaul: UConn Takeaways: Crystal Dangerfield's Evolution

At that size? I think she's one of the greats at any size, really!

I did not interpret it as a slight. I think Bruno was being incredulous that Geno can take these somewhat atypical small guards and do so much with them.

By "at that size," Doug may have been thinking about this kid who terrorized teams for her final 3 seasons:

Here you go:

UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who won his 999th career game, didn’t hold back when addressing Dangerfield’s role on the nation’s top-ranked team:

“There may not be anyone more critical to what we are trying to do than Crystal,” Auriemma said. “She makes shots. Right now we have Crystal, Kia (Nurse) and Lou (Samuelson) make shots, and that is tough for most teams to deal with. She sees so much, she has a great feel for the game and her instincts are good, so when the floor opens up like that, and she can have a lot of open spaces to work with,
she is pretty dangerous.” (Yuk yuk :D )

Looking forward to the Boneyard threads about UConn Mount Rushmore and UConn PG Rankings - at the end of KLS's and Dangerfield's UConn careers.

Just remember to apply the same National Championship criticism that you apply to Maya Moore. After all, she only won 2 NC. ;)

Some fans tend to forget that Maya's teammates included Kelly Faris who would or could not shoot from distance, Lorin Dixon who was not guarded, and freshman Dolson who was out of shape until her junior season.

How much credit should KLS get for a NC game that she did not play in, when Breanna and Moriah won their 4th consecutive NC? How much credit should Pheesa get for that NC?

Dangerfield has not won a NC yet. Hoping she wins 3 straight. Long way to go just to get the first.

Auriemma has said he didn’t trust her enough to play her on the big stage in Dallas. Just over eight months later, he won’t take her off the court. She’s too important.

This bit about Geno NOT TRUSTING Danger is a bit misleading. Danger was in the bow wow house for much of the year , had a concussion for a few weeks--so her time was almost non-existent--near the end she got PT in good NCAA games --including the 17 minutes of the final game--17 minutes???
If Geno TRULY distrusted Danger--she'd have been sitting collecting blisters and splinters--17 minutes in the toughest game of the year--does not spell out mistrust. I could point to other FROSH and a Senior who had either NO Time or minimal time--as provf of Geno's trust.

And the dopes on a certain board will be talking Final 4 We're Back tonight.
I already posted that return match up on Vol Nation----in the NC game--never too early to predict. Only two options---being right--being wrong.

That comment wasn't about Bruno--it was about Danger--ANYONE when speaking of good for her size---stand back CUZ Uconn nations thinks DANGER as a PG is 7 ft tall. Bruno is not the insulting/slighting kind of guy.

And the best part is stealing her from Vol country!

It’s always interesting to know when a seminal event causes a player to push themselves to another level of performance. For Gabby Williams, it was the realization that she was not ready to play in UConn’s OT loss to Stanford during her freshman year. For Danger, a similar realization that she was sitting and watching UConn lose the national semifinal to MS St.

Here’s a fantasy to consider. Go back to the last minute of OT in the national semifinal game, but instead of Saniya with the ball in her hand, replace her with this year’s version of Danger and tell me who wins the game.

I get the positive support for Crystal. She deserves that. But as to your question, it’s still MSU. Saniya had a very good senior year. She was somewhat harder to shoot over, was a decent scorer, had a very good ATO ratio, played tough defense, could shoot the three-ball and was unselfish. Saniya’s qualities seem pretty much similar to Danger’s. Both great kids and very hard workers.

Would be great if Vanderbilt could be arranged. 1/2 Hour drive from Murfreesboro. They seem to hate us for some reason, though, regardless of Geno BFF Jim Foster's stay there. Maybe Stephanie White would be amenable to a nationally-visible OOC game in a couple years. ??

In one of the media sessions this fall, Geno and/or Crystal clearly said that he didn't trust her enough in crunch time in the NC game. He doesn't like negative surprises. He was comfortable with Saniya, but not with Crystal.

Ah, but while all of the things you say in support of Sanyia may be true, if you're the opposing coach and players, with the ball in their hands, who scares you the most? Sanyia or Crystal?. Crystal brings speed and energy to the UCONN game that Sanyia just doesn't possess. On that last shot that Sanyia couldn't make against MSU, this year's Crystal draws the foul, makes the shot, or even more likely finds the open player who does make the shot.

Chattanooga is less than 2 hours (100 miles) down the road. Geno's buddy Jim Foster is still the coach there.

You want to see an old man cry?? Danger did however get 17 minutes in the final game. Trust or what every one may want to call it--Geno played her.
Had anyone--even this year's experienced Dangers against the very experienced William (Morgan)- face guarded her effectively-could have ended more happily for the team. Keeping the ball out of Morgan's hands MAY have disrupted the Mss players enough to allow Uconn to "run their stuff"..
