OT: Freshman track & field runner sets school record

Her time was 4.14 and change. Yikes! She is only one year out of high school. Comparing
what she just did as a frosh at UConn means we are very very fortunate to have her.
My guess [bet] is that she had many offers for track scholarship from elite schools
in that sport. It will be fun to see how she progresses in different events over the next 3 years...
maybe making a splash nationally....more than "maybe"

BTW: that time would translate to around a 4.33 mile. My guess [again my bet] is that many
track coaches at major programs shed some tears when Brooke said "UConn"!

When are the track/field nationals coming up? Go Brooke!

Just checked:

Men and women championships June 10-13 at University of Oregon in Eugene...
pretty much their version of THE center of the sport...a la UConn and hoops.

I looked her up, and her time at the nationals last year was 4:22. Eight seconds better in one year. That’s equivalent to going from 10 to 9.8 in the 100.

She’s from Glastonbury. Her family can still go to all of her meets

Both the men's and women's track and field teams are reasonably competitive. There is a knowledgeable track and field YouTube guy a couple of years ago (I believe it was 2024) who had the UConn women 10th in the country where dual meets are concerned. So if track and field operated the way basketball does, they would be a Sweet 16 team and hope for a mild upset to get into the Elite 8.

However, that isn't how track and field works. It is only the elite athletes that matter for scoring at nationals. And UConn does not have many athletes capable of placing in the scoring at a national level so UConn ends up far further down the list at the NCAAs championships.

From casual observation there is the occasional UConn athlete -- usually in events like the 1500m -- that make the final. It is very early in the season for everyone so best times can be funky, but if she is building toward June then watch out.

I hear ya -- My team won the state championship my senior year. Only five of us took medals, with IIRC three other than relay runners.
