Free Throws

After last night's game (ND), UConn averages 9.22 free throw attempts per game which is 351st of 353 women's D1 teams.
So this begs the question: What is the prime cause? Officialting? The way we play? Surely, the coaching staff is more than aware of this. Have they commented anywhere on the reasons or is it something not considered important enough to be worried about at this point?

Geno addressed the lack of trips to the free throw line in the post game presser last night. The Huskies weren't aggressive enough. And, yeah, the no-call on King climbing up Paige's back didn't get called along with a couple others. To be fair, UConn flattened an Irish player a few times with no call.

Everyone hates officiating, so I'm voting for style of play. Paige seeks contact, but who else jumps out at you?

If hitting the back of the basketball metal rim, counted as a 1/2 point, in foul shooting, we would be number one in the Nation !

I think I would put it on the style of play. UConn is running a three guard line up plus Sarah who plays a game similar to a guard. The objective seems to be get open looks from three which they aren't hitting. With that said I do think Paige is fouled a lot when she goes to the basket and gets no calls. She is a star, she needs to get the benefit of the doubt.

Actually, according to the NCAA stats page, we've moved up to 350th. Sure there's room for improvement but we're headed in the right direction! By this time next year we should be 1st.

when you have a jump-shooting team, you're not going to the free-throw line. Besides the page, who else attacks the rim? Even the bigs except Jana are known for shooting jumpers, Sarah 3's, and Ice's mid-range the entire freshman class are all shooters. The bench is full of shooters. Azzi is a shooter, as is Ducharme, Aubrey attacks the rim, but she's hurt KK attacks the rim but is not a finisher. Next year's class has two players who attack the rim and a rebounder/shot-blocker..hopefully, we won't have to wait that long before we win again. With this team, we gotta make shots, and last night, we just didn't make them.

It's one thing to recruit players who attack the rim; but you then have to let them, encourage them. KK( who is getting much better finishing) and Paige are the only attackers on this team. UConn has been missing this
type of player almost forever. It's a huge part of the
game, especially at the next level , but for some reason UConn doesn't seem to want to take part. A need for "flashy" players, the kind that don't exactly fit the UConn image? Boy,the UConn men have certainly had some of those. Game passing by some people?

We saw that too. Particularly in the first 5 minutes or so. It was like anything goes. Then when the whistle did start blowing it was rather unpredictable. Equally baffling were some blatant no calls on travels and moving screens. Just frustrating. It's gotten so commonplace I don't think they can clean it up. I dislike this phrase but - "It is what it is".

You know, some will call this rationalization but once again, we had to go into a game against a top level opponent minus a critical player (actually two, I know Aubrey would not have played anyway, but still, down two of our best players) I will only count Azzi, but does anyone doubt that she could (likely would) have been the difference in who won this game?

I’m unsure as to why the basketball gods have taken against UConn for the past four or five years, but I can only hope that we have finally been punished enough, and we can hope to move forward now with a fully healthy team that wins or loses with a full roster!! Obviously, I hope for the “win” side of the equation but win or lose, I’d like to see us doing it at full strength!!!! I’m so tired of this!

This well-worn lament certainly does smack of rationalization when the opponent was also down a critical player, both this year and last year, and neither time did they have to use that as an excuse for getting whipped by double digits.

Kelis Fisher, appears to me, to be an effective "attack the rim" type of player.

I accidentally hit like, I disagree. Imagine we had Caroline, Azzi, and Aubrey all of the last 2 years.

You are not alone, ND still has Westbeld out and Karlen was limited as it was her first game back. Several times an ND leader has gone down in the NCAA tournament, Watson last year, Miles the year before that, etc.

The primary reason is that Paige, who is our number one player driving to the basket, gets hammered, and never gets a call.
It's not just driving to the basket. Watch Paige try to cut across the lane. She'll get hit/bumped/swatted 2 or 3 times before making it to the other side of the court. Is this contact ever called? I have yet to see it.

If only Paige got the benefit of the whistles like some former basketball greats did. You could hardly glance their way at some of them without picking up a foul.

So true.

Watching our games plus many other both men and women I might be mistaken but it seems that there seems to be a lot of moving screens that are rarely being called. Has this progressed into the same "no foul" category as "palming" which now is hardly ever called. I wonder if others have noticed this.

Sure, I’m not saying others don’t have injuries! The thing is, with us it’s been nonstop for 4 years! No one has come close to facing the amount of quality minutes lost to injury that we have over these past four years!
