Francensa on Johnnies

Didn't listen to much but did hear him say how UConn was switching like they haven't all year.

I repeat ask - has Hurley held out on stuff intentionally? Between the switching, shutting down the high hedge, running transition - they were doing things in this game that we really haven't seen all year. Kudos to him if he's that good a coach he can run vanilla stuff for the bulk of the year to only flip on a dime in game 28.
Caught some of the pregame show on NBCSN and one of the guys mentioned Hurley told him he had a few tricks up his sleeve.

He says we are a 3 seed, and may have played ourselves into a 2 seed if we keep winning. But reiterates that we are a 3. Then says we have no shot at a 1.

And he says it with conviction, like don't even doubt him.
I think you should pretty much take his word as gospel because he never misses. I mean this guy correctly predicted Uconn would become irrelevant post Calhoun. Oh wait, never mind. 🙄

I’m not a big seed guy 7 and under, 8-9 sucks
1-2-3 is all good . That committee pretty much gets embarrassed annually with their seeding anyway and embarrassing them is fun.
We’ve won as a 1 ,7 , 5, and a couple of others.
Your seed guarantees almost nothing even the 1-16 game isn’t a lock
Playing at the top of your game it much more important and for us to do that
Reed has to dominate as our physicality is my concern
Seeding numbers are interesting .
However the number of pts we have being greater than the number of pts they have as time runs out are the numbers I really care about.

Hurley is uber-competitive so I don't think he would intentionally withhold anything earlier in the season. These seasons are too short for that. I read this morning that Kimani was the assistant that had the scout for this game. I would suspect that this was a change from the first game.

Agreed, plus Hurley is known for adding things later in the season to cover flaws, or just change things up.

Dude doesn’t know college basketball if he thinks we aren’t worthy of a 1.

Mike was correct that AK, Solo and Mullins aren’t reluctant three point shooters. Fortunately they were mostly in control last night.

Matt Norlander's column this morning reported Kimani had the scout.
The thing about the NCAA is that we have the best scouting and game planning. All that’s needed is maximum effort, especially from Tarris.

We just stomped his team, and then laughed at them

This is the type of venom he used to display in the 90's

He wants the 80's back

"Chris Mullin is not walking through that door, fans. Walter Berry is not walking through that door, and Mark Jackson is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they’re going to be gray and old."

Pitino can do the rest of the rant for him.

Championship seeds:

1999 - #1
2004 - #2
2011 - #3
2014 - #7
2023 - #4
2024 - #1

He def messed up with the seeding of Uconn. That was a wtf moment for sure. His age shows from time to time now, but overall hes still got it. Cant hate on it, as hes been doing it longer than some of us have been alive. He was very pro us in '24. He said we had zero weaknesses mid season in '24 and picked us to win very early on in that season. Enjoy it for what it is, he def makes more mistakes now, but hes the GOAT, like it or not, and when hes gone, their wont be anyone like him. PS: he pisses me off ALOT, but i still respect it.

Haaaaa. 100% on NY radio none the less.
Just remember that the SF Giants did move from NYC. Of course, you’d have to be at least 75 to remember them in NY.

I will give Mike credit for an interview he had with Coach Calhoun when JC was at St. Joe’s. JC stated that his two favorite players were Reggie Lewis and Kemba due to their love of the game.

When Francesa started at WFAN, he had an incredibly deep knowledge and understanding of college hoops. It dwindled as he became a “star” and spent far more time talking about what NYC fans care about, which is pro sports. And then add losing your fast ball as you age, and here we are.

But don’t doubt what he knew at the beginning.

Was going to post something like this. He paid attention closer than most fans and had access too. This was pre internet which made getting information, watching games, etc easier for everyone. I LOVED listening to Mike and the Mad Dog and was can't miss listening just before or after a big event. They were extremely entertaining and part of the culture - even finding their way on to an episode of the Sopranos. Mike F. is definitely way past his prime and gets tons of stuff wrong - you can tell he doesnt pay close attention anymore.

He s right that the johnnies have many holes. And Hurley just put the blueprint on the table.

Can Pitino even go back in his lab and really change much? I don't sense he's the kind of coach that can. He needed to take all the Jackson/Sanon NIL and thrown it at the best PG he could get. Those two guys are a waste of NIL, could have found cheaper replacements. They are shiney names/HS prospects, but not winning players.

I can't believe the Yarders dont remember that Fatscesa spent the better part of the 90's eviscerating Calhoun for "never being able to get his talented teams over the hump to the Final Four/Natty," then got out the knee pads for JC on March 30, 1999. Mikes Zaun should have parodied that.

I listened all day as a kid. Mike and Chris, Howie Rose, Ed Coleman, and then would call in to Steve Somers at night but only because that's where I can get my calls heard...after his 1 hour monologue (which he was really good at)

Didn't Mike and JC have a huge fight in the early 90s? I think it was when Rod Sellers got involved with Laettner.
