if we land either hayes or Obepka i would be very happy...
four guards = fast play with tons of points. would be like the old days...run and gun
Landing one would help this team have a shot to compete in the BE most nights. Landing both would help us forget all about Oriakhi & Scoe. I can't see us hanging in games late if we don't pick up at least one ready to play big. This assumes that Olander can stay out of foul trouble and give us a lot of minutes at the 4 and some at the 5 when needed. This also assumes Wolf can stay healthy, play at this level and not be the prototypical green post player who gives us 5 fouls in 10 minutes.
Losing Scoe is a huge blow since he was that flexible 4/3 combo that could give us a lot of minutes at the 4 if needed. Even with Scoe we needed to bring in another 4/5 combo or true 5. It's just hard to compete with out at least 2 experienced bigs. You need 3 who can rotate in and out of the line up and that 4th big to be ready to fill in to keep those 3 fresh and/or out of foul trouble. It's scary to think that Daniels could now find himself having to play some 4. Yikes!
Let's hope the staff can sell that Scoe's departure frees up a ton of PT at the 4 & 5 with Hayes and Obekpa. If both put immediate PT high as a priority and aren't as concerned about missing post season play for their first year, UConn becomes quite attractive. With Tyler as the only post player with experience who's not going to be able to play 40 minutes a game, (let's say he plays on average 25 to 30 minutes) what recruit wouldn't see a huge opportunity to get some of the 50 to 55 minutes up for grabs. Will either of these players be afraid to compete with Wolf? With Scoe, I can see them seeing that 50 to 55 shrink more to 25 to 30.
Let's hope losing Scoe can end up helping this team in the long run by landing one or both of these bigs.
