6'0" 205 lbs, runs a 4.5 forty and averaged almost 14 ypc at FUMA and doesn't have any other offers?

Here is a blurb from Scout -

As a senior, Williams attended Emmaus (Pa.)he totaled 130 carries for 1,283 yards and 18 touchdowns. Ran a 10.5/10.4 100-meters.

As a Post-Grad, Williams had 35 carries for 480 yards and six touchdowns.

See this is why you can't really put too much weight on these recruiting websites. 10.45 speed in the 100m? Maybe. NOT.

You'd find him a lot easier in the USA track and field olympic qualifiers if that were true, rather than a football recruiting website.

For reference sake, a 10.45 in the 100m he would have placed either 2nd or 3rd in the big east finals in May 2011, against much more physically mature runners.

(Kashif Moore ran a 10.79 and placed 15th)

This young man is fast though. Very fast for his size and weight.

The kid was clocked in a PA regional track meet as a 12th grader, officially timed, in the 100m in April 2011, a month before kashif ran that 10.79 and came in at 11.05 seconds.

He has run a 10.4 100 meters. That is flat out flying.

This is a rough conversion, 100-meter time converted to 40-yard dash time;

10.2 --- 4.34
10.3 --- 4.38
10.4 --- 4.43
10.5 --- 4.49
10.6 --- 4.54
10.7 --- 4.58
10.8 --- 4.63
10.9 --- 4.75
11.0 --- 4.85
For all the board regulars, this topic gets brought up every year around this time-the meaning of Track & Field times, the distinction between "fast" and "quick", etc....Without rehashing every little nuance that can come up I do want to point out something for any newcomers to the board that might not know specifics about the reporting of Track times-if a Track & Field time is listed only to the "tenths" spot (like a 10.4 in the 100meter dash), that means it was timed by hand. If a Track & field time is listed to the "hundredths" spot (say, a 10.47 in the 100m), then it "should" have been done electronically and can be counted on for greater accuracy. Sometimes coaches will report a hand time to the hundredths and that is not allowable, but obviously no one on these boards knows if that happens when a time is reported to the hundredths. Over the years I have seen coaches who simply suck at hand timing and get wacky results despite honest efforts to do it right, and I have seen coaches that frankly, I question their ethics since I see them constantly submit hand times for kids that FAR EXCEED what the kids end up doing at States with electronic timing.

Not commenting at all about this kid's ACTUAL speed since I have NO IDEA, but for the newbies, a 100m time listed to the tenths place needs to be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. Some of my kids run 11.1 hand times and consistently beat other kids who supposedly run 10.6 hand times.

As for this specific young man-welcome aboard! The staff must have been impressed if he committed all the way back in June.

Wait a minute ... are you suggesting that not everything written on a recruiting site is not entirely accurate? Blasphemy! Every 5 star is a true 5 star, every 2 star should either start hitting the books or reduce his dreams to playing FCS or BigEast. What next, you will tell me that every HS kid can not run a 4.5 fourty? Wait, let me guess the TE who de-committed in favor of a late OU offer will get bumped to 4 stars? C'mon!

Pack on 20lbs of muscle and you got a back with some ass, maybe a shoemate with better Hands.

Maybe because he committed in June when people came calling he said "thanks but no thanks"

Stats were skewed by a couple of long runs.

Yeah, if he got tackled after a 5 yards instead of going for 70 yards, he would have only gotten 5 yards.

(and BL, Even if RE was still coach)

Well, according to at least person on this board, those 70 yard runs will skew his numbers and make him look better than he actually is. So buyer beware.
If you understood math or statistics you'd agree with me... but I'm happy he's coming anyway. At least he can outrun the defensive ends we have.

I'm a math major and work in probability/insurance, and I think your point is absurd.

But keep saying it, and maybe someone will start to believe you know something!

If you could succinctly make the point that you'd prefer a Emmitt Smith style RB that always gets 3-5 yards over a Barry Sanders type RB who may lose some yards and then break off a couple of 50 yarders you'd sound reasonable.

Unfortunately you haven't done that.

Guys that win the NCAA and compete for the Olympics run about a 10 flat. 10.4 is flying.

Yup on all of that, especially the welcome aboard part, and that goes to every single one of the 2012 recruiting class and I hope more to join in.

As for the numbers I"ve put up. Heres' the eastern PA high school regional results from april 2011.

and the big east results from May 2011.

One of my biggest, little pet peeves on Edsall was the way he shunned track and field. Where the hell else are you going to find the fastest runners?

Recruiting services? Pennsylvannia kid? Fork Union? 10.45 handheld v electronic? Under-the-radar? Something wrong? Doesn't mean much. Better question is who did UConn have to beat out for this kids services. Indiana U in PA is not impressive. Other schools mentioned (West Virginia & Rutgers) are more impressive. Too bad UConn hadn't beaten out the likes of Penn State or Georgia or South Carolina.

All in all sounds like this kid has the potential to come in and at least be a Lyle McCombs-like back. Don't know if he has Todman or Donald Brown-like talent. Time will tell.

Sounds like a solid player. Looks good on tape. The thing that is interesting to me is that he may have been on board since June....so he was not a replacement for M. Dobbs. I would guess that we are still recruiting at this position.

Save that sentence for your clipboard. You can say this about every RB we recruit for the next 25 years.

It takes an unbelievably skewed sense of entitlement to say "at least he can perform like a freshman rusher who passed 1000 yards and led his conference" as if it is no big deal.

Read carefully counselor.

TDH said he has the "potential" to end up being somewhere between McCombs and Todman/Brown.

I'll gladly carry the "unbelievable skewed sense of entitlement" banner on that one.

I expect all of our RB recruits to have that level of "potential".

While it gets old being one of the only posters who is free to admit mistakes, I think your reading of TDH's post is a better reading than mine was. My bad and apology.

I'm just wondering.....how do we know McCombs won't turn out to be a DB or JT? Now I'm not saying I think he will, but he's off to a better start than both of them.

If Williams came in and rushed for 1100 yards his freshman year there isn't one of us on this board that wouldn't sign for that right now.

No worries. And I agree with you that no one should expect every RB to come in and perform as well as McCombs did. But I think they should have the potential to do so.

We're not even halfway through a week without any bowl game to discuss, no transfers and no basketball to boot as well. By Friday posters will be getting slammed for misusing punctuation?

OK now I'm worried. Did they post the results of my last physical? Am I terminal? At a minimum, I'm having trouble believing what my eyes are seeing.

Thanks, Chin for the observation. Curious Biz, considering that LM was the featured back, what part of his 4.2 yds/carry do you consider on par with Brown's 5.7 in '08, JT's 5.1 in '09 & 5.1 in '10 when they were the featured back? Neither one was as a freshman.

Don't get me wrong, I really like McCombs. He had a terrific year. But, to date he's not either Todman or Brown expecially in the ability to break a big gainer and take it to the house. So landing an RB who has potential to come in and at least be a Lyle McCombs-like back is a reasonable expectation. Now landing a Lyle McCombs caliber at the QB position?? Now that would be entitlement. Dan O's obviously don't come around Storrs every decade.

McCombs had a very nice year. That said, I do not see him in the mold of DB or JT. He's not as fast or strong as either of them. LM really struggled this year gaining any yards after contact. In that sense alone he is no where near the back DB was in college. I have to believe this staff is looking fast and furious for a back to compliment LM.

That all said, kid has all the respect in the world from me. He was very productive and tough and I would never have believed he could hold up under that work load through a whole season given his size. Very nice back.

JT went down on the suggestion of contact during his freshman year. Comparing McCombs as a freshman to soph/junior year JT is not accurate.
