The benching of a soon to be 6 gold medalist in basketball, the only ever, was atrocious. Even the TV analyst said she needed to go in the game to calm us down and lead. It was a glaring slap in the face and one a great coach like Geno would never abide. I remember when Tamika Catchings was on the team and she clearly was nowhere near her former self but she started and then came out. It's what you do. If Reeve was so unsure of winning that game (she almost didn't) that she couldn't put her in for a few minutes then she shouldn't have been the coach. Classless move that will be remembered by many. I'm sorry she is Pheesa's coach because I can't root against her.

Sounds like you don't understand how anyone could possibly have a different opinion than yours. There are actually many.

For me the "goat" is not just about basketball skills. It's about character too.

That's why I would choose Stewart and Maya 1 and 2.

Not once ever did I ever hear Maya use verbiage like that and I never saw her trash talk her opponents. Never saw Stewie do that either.

But I am entitled to my own opinions. Maybe if you had young girls who watch/idolize these players you would understand a parents point of view.

When she said "do you wanna film me taking a ....." I Won't repeat the word. My wife had to rewind it 3 times to see if she actually heard what she heard.

If you think that is appropriate or G-Rated content for an 8 and 10 year old then we have a difference of opinion big time.

Personally it doesn't really offend me because I could care less.

But it's the kids who look up and follow these players. It's the kids who imitate these players. That is an issue.

According to Di, the "best 4 years of her life" were spent playing b'ball in Russia. Not sure I like the sound of that.
That being said, the doc is interesting and surprisingly touching. I'm happy for the rich, full life our girl is having.

I get it. When she and Sue were in Russia, they were treated very well. Salaries were more on par with M professional players in the US, they were treated like royalty and given gifts, etc. When your job is basketball, it's hard work, day in and out, so the extra "stuff" they got, made it worthwhile to travel across the globe (to cold weather) to play.

In all fairness though, Diana played 20 years in the WNBA. Maya only played 8 years. (4 championships in 8 years too)

Maya came in as the best player and she left in her prime as the best player.

Sort of like this guy named Jim Brown that my father used to always tell us about as kids...

Tons of great running backs/players came into the NFL after Jim Brown... No matter who it was, Tony Dorsett, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders or whoever...My father always responded with "Jim Brown was the greatest of all time"..And he retired young..

So then I watched some video of this Jim Brown guy and I said you are right. Jim Brown really was the goat...

Agreed. A true mensch through thick and thin. The documentary itself is superlative--nothing glossed over, a deep dive into PED allegations, DUI, last Olympics; there is bravado, for sure, and that is a beautiful thing, because, as Sue says, in sharing her infectious enthusiasm for the game, she uplifts everyone around her.

I agree with 80 percent of this. I think Maya wasn’t the best player in the W until her third year (not close as a rookie, and I’d argue Tina nosed her out her second year) and I think longevity counts in the GOAT discussion. But I’m old enough to remember how great Jim Brown was.

Re: Longevity

Maya had her reasons for leaving/retiring early. Jim Brown probably had his reasons too.

Many players in ALL sports seem to surpass the records/legacies of the real "goats" because they decide to play forever and sometimes they pad their numbers....

Baseball and football are perfect examples. How many running backs have surpassed Jim Brown in numbers because they played forever. Emmett Smith is a perfect example. But he was not better than Jim Brown.

Same thing with people like Barry Bonds surpassing Hank Aaron. No way Bonds (who cheated) was better than Aaron. Or Ruth..

I think Diana made a huge mistake being on that last Olympic team at 42 years of age. She complained about not be allowed to play but she should have given up that spot to the younger kids in the first place. Just my thoughts.

She accomplished everything on the court that was necessary so there was no reason why she couldn't have the class to let Clark or one of the other young kids get their chance.

Diana had a lot of pull and a lot of say with regards to the sport. So she could have said let the young kids take my spot.

Can you imagine someone on this board saying Diana had no class lol...(I am waiting for the insults and the how dare you's)

That's how I feel about that Olympic situation.


That's the difference between her and Maya in my opinion.

God only knows how many records/championships/mvps/Olympic Gold medals Maya would have gotten had she stuck around..

She had a higher calling though no doubt in my mind.

I agree. I remember yelling during that game for her to play Diana. I just couldn't believe she was on the bench. In that last episode I loved DT's attitude at the trolls, etc. - she just doesn't care. And half the time she didn't know anything about it. Loved that.

Players don't choose to be role models - it's the fans that put those expectations on them. Some are OK with it, and some aren't. They don't have to be. That's not why they play the game.
