I think you're arguing with imagined ghosts. I have no idea who even framed the argument you're making. I took issue with your idea that we should blame UConn football for being left out. That's crazy. UConn football is the only reason we were even considered. Were it not for UConn football, we never would have been considered. We would have been on the outs like all the bball only schools. Are you also arguing against Gene DeFilippo who noted UConn was a first choice over Pitt? Are you arguing over Jurich who also noted UConn was "penned" in? Who are you arguing with?
By the way, the year is 2013. Pitt and Syracuse have not been top teams for a very long time, more than a decade.
