Florida - Report Card

But that doesn't change the fact that Mullins had little if anything to do with us winning this game Tuesday night.
“Little if anything” is hardly a fact. In the 6-minute stretch when we went from down 3 to up 6. He made 3 shots in a row - all when Florida had the lead and the momentum. Those shots got us back afloat and started the pendulum swinging back our way. That’s pretty hard to do when you haven’t been in the flow of the game.

Think back to Arizona - we lost momentum and fell behind by 12. Then we rallied and came all the way back - got the lead - but came up short. If Florida kept things going, we’d have been in a similar hole and maybe had a similar ending, but Mullins helped stop their momentum in a key stretch so we seized control of the game back and led by 8 instead of trailing by 8. That mattered a lot.

It is a fair point that he didn’t play well or disciplined on D and we’ll see better games from him. But he picked up his first 2 on his second possession and his third in the second half immediately after checking in, so he never allowed himself to break a sweat and get settled in. A learning curve moment to be more mentally ready when he checks in (which won’t be so much of a factor if/when he becomes a starter)

Those three shots and his fifth foul were definitely part of the win. Without Mullins contribution Florida could have cut the lead to 2 or 1 by the time he picked up that fifth foul. However, had he truly been a factor in the game it wouldn’t have been such a close game. Looking forward to watching his game soar!

1. I didn't say anything about how he could have (and probably would have) positively affected our chances of winning the game against Arizona. No reason to use that as part of your defense for why he deserves an average at best grade for this particular game against Florida.

2. Ok, I will agree that his 3 baskets during that important stretch when we had stemmed their momentum and got into the back and forth was a positive... so that is why he gets a C. Otherwise, the grade would have been worse.

Bottom line: as one of our best and most important players in an arguably very meaningful game, he contributed significantly less than we need him to.

I figured someone would come to his defense, but I don't think it was needed. If we are going to win the Big East and get to the Final Four, Braylon will play an integral if not huge part in us getting there. Therefore he can't in effect take himself out of the game on multiple occasions because he makes a couple of poor decisions on defense within seconds of entering the game. He has to be smarter than that.

That is all I am saying. And that is, in fact, what happened.

Mullins has potential for sure. but fouling out in a big game? a lottery pick? lolz. he’s ramping up to be a McNeeley with no nba career in the doldrums of charlotte (yes I saw he’s projected maybe Dallas. hyperboles are way more fun)
He has played what, three games so far? He will be fine and won't always have to cover players that athletic and bigger than him

Yeah, a freshman fouling out in one of the first games of his career in a big game is a clear death knell to his pro career.

Ross did a heck of a job on Lee in the second half
He was part of the lineup that Hurley wisely put out there at the under 12 that lead to huge defensive stops.

Why do we ignore all the good stuff in deference to plays that are the easiest to criticize? I will probably hear "we are allowed to criticize the bone head in bound turnover" true, but you cant ignore how he handled lee. LEE was abusing us like that kid from NM state.

Ross is one of our top 3 defenders and the staff seems to agree.
Our bench can really discourage an opponent. Lee was abusing us and looked to be trash talking it up in the first half. OK Mr. Lee; Here's a fresh 6-7 guy. Let's see what you can do with him.

The more we win, the more fans with silly takes that visit our Boneyard

Enjoy the ride people, we're special. If you can’t do that, that's your problem and no-one else's.

And no, the Debbie Downers are not smarter than everyone else. I have trouble comprehending how any UConn fan can be a DD. Hopefully they're just young and naive

Being young is a good thing 😀
