Five impact transfers for the 2014-15 college basketball season

After watching a lot of NC State games, it is obvious they do not develop their players at all. Purvis commented soon after his arrival in Storrs that everything was much more intense. Going into halftime and at the end of games during the season, Purvis walked and talked with Shabazz, trying to learn all he could. From the little bit I've seen, expect a much different player as he seems to have already learned to harness his speed and play with much better control. And he's been working on his outside shooting. We're in for something special with him playing with Boat and Tsam (not to mention the others) next year. He's been a point guard, but I bet he'll play more shooting guard while being able to handle the rock enough to take pressure off Boat. That's the versatility that Coach O. wants in players. But, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's one and done for us.

2. More importantly, Purvis is missing about 4-5months this offseason due to surgery. Young guys developing their game need that offseason to learn/prepare. Look at what happened to Omar with no offseason; I think it'll take Purvis a little while to get back up to speed. Note, I don't expect remotely close to an Omar type season for Purvis.

3. He wants to learn the point guard position, one of the reasons he came. That takes time, as he's a natural two. No better place to learn than under Ollie. He won't truly get the feel for the point until Boat leaves. Boat is (hopefully) going to be our Shabazz--the man--next year.

I'd argue that it is easier to pick up the PG spot in college than in the pros. Nobody in the pros wants to turn over the key to the team to a guy who isn't top notch. Everybodies' fighting to put food on the table, and they need the ball in the right spots.

jmo though. He could turn out to be the best in the country. Which would be nice.

Saying one and done in regards to Purvis is different than saying AD was a one and done. I have no idea if he will be, but he's gonna be a 3rd year soph, he's not a freshman stepping right on campus, he's well seasoned. Based on the fact that the staff is trying to lock down another high level PG/combo, they seem to be recruiting with the possibility of him leaving after one year in the back of their minds.

But still he wasn't considered a shooter coming in and 38% was kind of over achieving a little that year. He is known for his Athleticism, intensity, slashing ability, finishing through contact, defensive prowess... We will need to work on his handle and his shot. Right now he's like a Ron Artest type player.

Maybe he knew it was a weakness of his game, worked on it, and improved?

1- Purvis's situation is totally different from AD. He was never expected to stay in college more than a couple of years. He'd be a one and done for us, but he already played a year in the ACC so only a one and done for us.
2- He'll miss some time, but he already made huge gains working last summer and in practice a large part of the season. Before the season even started his scouting report had him at greatly improved. The shoulder surgery was done during the season so that he would get plenty of development time in before next season. It's minor surgery for an injury he's had since high school. Another clue that they don't develop or take care of players at NC State is that they knew of the shoulder injury and never bothered to get it fixed.
3- He's actually a combo guard and slated as a shooting guard for the NBA. (Played more of a pg role in high school down the road from me because he's that good and had plenty of good players on his team.) He likes to play with the rock in his hands so he can drive the lane and he's already vastly improved his outside shot. He'll be taking plenty of threes next year. He came here for the two years of development (one year playing) to get to the NBA and to get away from a coach that basically didn't want him (bad decision). In our offense he'll get plenty of time with the rock because Coach O. likes versatility. He'll need to play some pg to take pressure off Boat, just like Boat did for Bazz.
It would be great if he does stay more than a year. But, I lean toward Coach O.'s stocking up on guards to replace the ferraris that leave.

If he does leave, that would have meant he'd of had a monster year for us. If he puts up 18ppg, 5ass, 6reb, 2stl a la Bazz, I'll take it in a heartbeat and wish him godspeed.

I have heard a lot of talk over the years about guys who would be one and done for us, and outside of AD, it never happens. Purvis does already have 3 years in college though, as you say.

And for the record, I don't know why people are saying I was comparing him to AD. I only threw AD in there because he was our only one and done. That's it. Obviously the situations are different.
