First Practice Video with the newbies

I'm a Husky BB fan for as long as Geno's been the women's coach and Calhoun the men's coach. I'm a reader, not a poster ( as is indicated by my message and reaction numbers ) but trust me I have plenty to say. Today I feel compelled to post message # 20.

Namaste folks, everybody has their opinion, and none of them are right or wrong. The Boneyard is a tremendous tool to read them, think about and cordially discuss them, and compare them to your own.

I'm sure I can safely say that I speak for most of us in that I'm stoked for the upcoming season, maybe more than ever before. Let's all be as excited as we should be, it's a great time to be a Uconn hoops fan! There's no need for aggression, man.

I was so excited to see Ayanna out there moving smoothly. That young woman has been through the wringer and seems to have maintained a terrific attitude throughout; if she has retained even a fraction of her athleticism through her injuries, I think she will be a real asset to the Huskies in the upcoming season. Let's go, Yanna!
Great to see her moving well too. She may have been called for a foul on Sarah. Now that she has her mobility back, she can work on her timing and get more game repetitions.

Why do they need the Male practice players for a scrimmage?

Has Sarah put in some gym time? She looks a bit slimmer and more muscular to my eye. Or it could just be the moment the photo was taken...
I thought the same

Also, Ziebell appears to be wearing facial protection of some sort.
Yes, I believe she had surgery on her nose which had been broken. However, unless she was having breathing troubles, with three years to go she might have wanted to wait. :)

Aluminny69- - - Men perform at a faster, more aggressive rate of speed that women usually do so the girls have to perform faster and more aggressive to keep up with the men!
I've often wondered what restrictions the boys are under. I wouldn't want to be the practice player who injured one of the girls.

I also thought it would be fun to be a male practice player. You could learn so much basketball just from watching Geno. However, I'd be afraid that, at some point, my competitive instincts would take over, and I would ignore any "restrictions."

I should add, back in 1965-1969, there were no girls in the gym playing any sports. They didn't even have coed dorms until 1970.

I think that to qualify as a leader you have to be on the floor and as much as Caroline is loved her history of playing in games for the past two years is very limited. To have someone who has just joined the team and is unfamiliar with her teammates is a little farfetched. The one player I see as a leader is KK. She has played as much or more than any other sub and I think she will be a starter from day one of this season as long as she continues to improve playing under control.

It is not my intention to be argumental here, but Head Coaches are "leaders" in every sense of the word and they are never "on the floor".

Paige was most definitely was a leader when she couldn't play due to injury. Some people are simply born leaders and Caroline is one of those people. She is loved and respected because she knows this game inside and out, and all of her teammates are very well aware of the talents she once possessed (and hopefully will again next season). She wants to be a coach. If she can make it back to playing 20+ minutes per game, her leadership will be shown in many ways. However, even if she can't comeback that far, her leadership presence and guidance will be felt, heard and respected from the bench. She is a complete student of the game. That's most likely why she is holding the clipboard in the photo above. KK could also be a great inspirational leader as her enthusiasm and determination to "win" is contagious. Azzi simply can dominate with her exceptional skills (and most likely will) lead by example and perhaps not in expressing direction or guidance verbally. And, we don't know about Sarah as a sophomore.

But one thing for sure, none of us are going to have anything whatsoever to say in determining who the "leader" (if there is to be only one) will be.

Yeah, I don't think so. Sorry KK is the team jokester, as such not a good choice for team leader. She has one advantage, she has the ball in her hands, however I think it ends there. In my mind I think Azzi wants to be team leader and has the chops for it. Don't be surprised if we see Ash take a huge step giving Azzi great backup as a leader. Don't count out Sarah either.
One thing is very clear, and that is that at this point nothing is very clear. We can pontificate from here until November, and that's what we do here on the BY, but that's all we can do. Ok, one other thing is very clear, the leader will emerge early on this coming fall. It will happen before we even know someone has stepped up. We didn't know Paige would be the leader her first year, we watched it happened right before our eyes. I look forward to watching who emerges this coming season, while I probably end up laughing at myself for missing on my picks.

I won't be surprised. In fact, I'm expecting it. She had a significant sophomore leap in all the categories Geno wanted from her -- 3pt%, assists, steals, turnovers, while maintaining her scoring and rebounding, and generally raising her defensive profile and intensity. I think we'll see another leap, and this time it will probably be in her scoring and rebounding.

Yeah, I think you have to say last year's MOP of the national championship game, who could have turned pro but returned to seek another championship has to be the early clubhouse favorite for "team leader." I agree that it doesn't come naturally to Azzi, but Geno and Chris will work with her.

The powers that have stripped me of the ability to give likes or other things. But I like your reply very much, I agree that Geno and Chris will work their magic, and Azzi will gain her voice. It may be that the strong personality that was Paige stifled Azzi to a point. It will be fun and interesting to see how things turn out.

Yes, and her rebounding in the 2nd half of the season was on the rise. While there are some players with more natural talent, some quicker, some faster and most are taller it is very rare indeed if any of them best Ash. No one out works her, no one out hustles her, she is one of a kind.

Kk may be an effervescent jokerster off the court but she's an game/ pace changing shark on defense. So whts wrong with loosing up with a couple videos and interviews in between games as long as she's all business on the court, after all ...they're in college

So does having a sense of humor disqualify a player from being a leader? Azzi has been around for three years and has not shown any inclination of stepping up to be a leader and Sarah is virtually silent most of the time. I think too many people underestimate KK but time will tell.
