I saw something this year where they stated a lot of the early plays that Josh McDaniels runs for the Patriots are designed as experiments to see how the defense reacts to different situations. They use the information they gain to determine what to run later in the game. Hopefully UConn has some sort of methodical game planning like this. A couple of failed plays early is ok if they gain information from it.

That's right. This is why often times you hear coaches/announcers saying that "the first 15 plays are scripted" for a game. This is to read the defense, and make adjustments for later in the game.
