Wow...no Griner. Shame on USA Basketball for choosing the Friday before the Final Four for making this announcement. She must be greatly disappointed. And I am disappointed for her that this announcement would put a damper on her FF experience.

How do you know they are not simply waiting until after the final four to announce that it is Griner? This could very well be the case.

I think she will be there. She is the most unique player in the world. If it is her, I wish they would have announced it with the rest of the team. Don't give her any extra motivation.

I think USA basketball is taking advantage of the relatively high profile weekend for WCBB to make this announcement, and I don't think it's fair to put the whole USA basketball team on hold for just one player.

Besides, I think we all know that the player to be named later will be Britney, and deservedly so. I wouldn't be surprised if she has been given private assurances of that. OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if she were just focused on the NC this weekend, and the committe is just trying not to pose any distractions to that - at least until next Wednesday morning.

Or it could motivate her.

Five more days...that's all the other players would have waited. I am extremely upset with USA Basketball. I hope it motivates BG to go out and kick ass like never before.

That's what I was thinking. If she were, in fact, excluded from the final team, she wouldn't have a unique opportunity (for a college player) to learn and compete, that might be to Baylor's detriment next season, but a pissed off Griner could well be to everyone else's detriment this weekend.

really .... what is the purpose of announcing 11 and leaving one for later? Why not wait until you can announce all 12?!?!?

Yeah - I don't know why any other 12th player would not have been named except Griner. It is also possible that Griner has asked for some time to consider - eg until after her season is over.
I am also curious - usually they have named 'alternates' in case of injury during the run-up to the competition. That way the players get to do the training camp with the team and are not coming in cold later in the year. Any idea iof they will name alternates?

CONGRATULATIONS TO SWIN CASH!!!

Lost in all the drama about who the 12th mystery player is, Swin Cash is on the team! not only did she make it ahead of Pondexter, but Dupree as well. I think it's totally deserved and guarantees that on a team of 12, 5 will be UCONN players. how cool is that???

BTW as a side note, congrats to all the players who made the team. it's a HUGE honor. but it will be particularly special for Swin, Sue, Diana, Tina and Maya to not only be at the Olympics with great friends, but being coached by the best coach in the world, and their former college coach!

I am not surprised that Swin made it. She is so versatile and experienced. She deserves to be on this team, as do Maya, DT, Sue and Tina.

Normally the last one annouced is a college player, like an intern to the Olympic team, e.g. Christian Laettner, Rebecca Lobo, Candace Parker, etc. Griner maybe unique, however she is a still a college player.

Swin is healthy and plays as hard as anyone. Even Catch, Angel, and Maya don't outwork her. Congrats to Dr. Swintayla Marie Cash!

Whatever the reasons that the announcement was made today,it really bothers me:mad: IMHO this Final Four should have been the lone focus until after Tues! There are many
potential impacts to this announcment today! All could have been prevented! Extra motivation for her and her team, added pressure,# of Ct players impacts other teams positive or negative play.
There is no positive to this other than USA Committee getting attention! Leaving it at 11 makes the Griner being picked/or not the story throughout the Final Four!!
I cannot/DONOT believe Geno was in favor of this, but it was not his decision! It will make for another storyline!
For this 5 days it should be about Women's College Basketball BEING CENTER STAGE!
That can include Kim M. being diagnosed,Pat,but not the USA 11 announcement!
:mad::rolleyes::confused: Pissed off

From Jim Fuller:

June 18 is deadline to name 12th member and three alternates to U.S. #Olympic women's basketball team

Geno Auriemma on Olympics: "Wednesday morning when I wake up I'll be at training camp and I'lll be in London mentally and emotionally."

I couldn't agree more. IMO, USA Basketball made a very poor decision.

Why?

Leaving spots open is nothing new for the U.S. The Americans only announced nine players initially for the 2008 Games before filling out the roster nearly two months later. They also unveiled a core of players in 2000 and 2004 before filling out those teams later.

The Americans have until June 18 to select the final player for the London Olympics.

Jim Fuller with quotes:

Geno: "Of all the people picked for that (Olympic) team, I am probably most proud of how Lindsay (Whalen) got on that team."

Swin Cash on being on Olympic team with former #UConn and #WNBA teammate Sue Bird "I just can't get rid of her."

Geno Auriemma on 5 ex #UConn players on Olympic team: "They deserve this. They deserve this honor. "

Former #UConn star Swin Cash on making Olympic team: "It was really emotional for me because I knew what it took to get back there."

First 11 includes only 3 pure posts: Fowles, Parker and Charles. And both Charles and Parker could play the 4 and in Parker's case the 3 as well.. Looks to me like another center is needed.

# 11 will be Griner, I am as certain as can be without inside information.

Swin is both grateful and funny. Lesson: If you hang around Sue Bird enough, something good will happen to you.

Yeah, you're right. It couldn't possibly be disappointing not to be named to the Olympic team during the announcement at the Final Four where you are playing.
