Wow...no Griner. Shame on USA Basketball for choosing the Friday before the Final Four for making this announcement. She must be greatly disappointed. And I am disappointed for her that this announcement would put a damper on her FF experience.
I think she will be there. She is the most unique player in the world. If it is her, I wish they would have announced it with the rest of the team. Don't give her any extra motivation.Wow...no Griner. Shame on USA Basketball for choosing the Friday before the Final Four for making this announcement. She must be greatly disappointed. I think USA basketball is taking advantage of the relatively high profile weekend for WCBB to make this announcement, and I don't think it's fair to put the whole USA basketball team on hold for just one player.
Besides, I think we all know that the player to be named later will be Britney, and deservedly so. I wouldn't be surprised if she has been given private assurances of that. OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if she were just focused on the NC this weekend, and the committe is just trying not to pose any distractions to that - at least until next Wednesday morning.
Five more days...that's all the other players would have waited. I am extremely upset with USA Basketball. I hope it motivates BG to go out and kick ass like never before.
That's what I was thinking. If she were, in fact, excluded from the final team, she wouldn't have a unique opportunity (for a college player) to learn and compete, that might be to Baylor's detriment next season, but a pissed off Griner could well be to everyone else's detriment this weekend.Or it could motivate her.
CONGRATULATIONS TO SWIN CASH!!!
Lost in all the drama about who the 12th mystery player is, Swin Cash is on the team! not only did she make it ahead of Pondexter, but Dupree as well. I think it's totally deserved and guarantees that on a team of 12, 5 will be UCONN players. how cool is that???
BTW as a side note, congrats to all the players who made the team. it's a HUGE honor. but it will be particularly special for Swin, Sue, Diana, Tina and Maya to not only be at the Olympics with great friends, but being coached by the best coach in the world, and their former college coach!
Whatever the reasons that the announcement was made today,it really bothers me IMHO this Final Four should have been the lone focus until after Tues! There are manyI think she will be there. potential impacts to this announcment today! All could have been prevented! Extra motivation for her and her team, added pressure,# of Ct players impacts other teams positive or negative play.
There is no positive to this other than USA Committee getting attention! Leaving it at 11 makes the Griner being picked/or not the story throughout the Final Four!!
I cannot/DONOT believe Geno was in favor of this, but it was not his decision! It will make for another storyline!
For this 5 days it should be about Women's College Basketball BEING CENTER STAGE!
That can include Kim M. being diagnosed,Pat,but not the USA 11 announcement!
Pissed off

Why?
Leaving spots open is nothing new for the U.S. The Americans only announced nine players initially for the 2008 Games before filling out the roster nearly two months later. They also unveiled a core of players in 2000 and 2004 before filling out those teams later.
The Americans have until June 18 to select the final player for the London Olympics.
