Finally Geno's Take On Azzi and Leadership

That standing around thing:

"Last year a lot of our offense was Maya and one other person," he said. "And a lot of times it was Tiffany, sometimes it was Bria (Hartley), very rarely was it Kelly. Now when I watch us play out here, it is Stephanie (Dolson). It is way more times Tiffany. It is way more times Kelly, and Bria is kind of the way Bria was last year."

"The players expect to share more of accountability without Moore. Hartley said in the past when the Huskies got into trouble, many of them would stand around, knowing they had the luxury of watching Moore bail them out. That's what happened against Notre Dame in the national semifinals, and Moore couldn't win that game by herself, Hartley said."

Hartley didn't make that up. I recall Geno saying that in several postgame chats with media, whether corridor chats or press conferences. Couldn't find Geno's press conference after the 2010 semi loss to Notre Dame.

Leaders aren’t born. Some people are born with traits or characteristics that help them be better leaders. Just because someone has charisma or is verbally motivational, doesn’t necessarily mean they are better leaders. There are numerous ways to motivate, persuade, and drive others to be great or build the team.

There is an art and a science to leadership. The best leaders are great at understanding both.

I do agree that you can’t force someone to be a leader if they don’t want to be. It can blow up in everyone’s face. However, if they want to do it, they’ll need to be challenged to improve their shortcomings.

I think all of us can agree that Geno is great at pushing the right buttons to help our players grow into the best versions of themselves both on and off the court.
I agree with most of this and Vince Lombardi conditioned us all to believe everything he said was gospel. "Leaders aren't born they are made." You can train people to lead in a structured environment, like football and basketball and the military. But there are many stories coming out of the military of privates in combat taking over a unit an exhibiting exemplary leadership.

I agree with this. Any excellent unit/organization has both great formal and informal leaders. Rank/position doesn’t necessarily mean they’re great leaders.
