Final BE OOC thread 25/26

Pitino is a shadow of the coach he was at Louisville. Post NIL/Transfer Portal, college coaching is game planning, game coaching, and motivating players. Recruiting doesn't really matter anymore. SJU proved it can raise money to compete, so it doesn't need Pitino for that. He has gotten out-coached in every game against a quality team this season, but SJU still managed to beat Baylor and Mississippi because they are better than those teams.

The offense is a train wreck, and the defense is OK, not great. Some players, like Hopkins, are not playing hard. Pitino is disrespecting the rest of his team by allowing Hopkins to play this lazy. Hopkins should be buried on the bench.

There is too much talent for the wheels to come completely off like they did today. The second half of this game is an embarrassment to SJU. Virtually any coach in the county would be on the hot seat if their team spent what SJU spent and started like SJU has this year, and in particular, played like this in a very big game.

Pitino should be on the hot seat if he doesn't make a deep run in March.

Pitino is an absolute embarrassment. All concerned about inviting Dayton to the BE and what we are doing. Meanwhile he has FLOPPED every single big non conference game for 2 years.

Seton Hall has a ton of fight in them (they match Shaheen's image well), but they are very limted. They should make the tournament, but I don't see them doing much, if anything once they get there. Rick may be able to get this St John's collection of players to look like a team by March, but even if they can get into the trournament they aren't going far.

If any of our other eight conference mates can get into the dance (I believe at least four or five have already played their way out) it will be for a very short run.
They are tiny - ball pressure will only go down far. Built more like a feisty mid major.

St Johns really blew this one. Credit to Kentucky for making shots but this was more an implosion from the Johnnies than a great turnaround by the Wildcats

Any BE team that's projecting to end around the bubble needs to be really careful. St Johns is definitely still good enough to beat anyone in the conference. But they've been so miserable OOC that those home games may against them may slip to Q2. Could become must-wins for the Seton Halls, Butlers, Villanovas etc

He won’t be on the hot seat. Who else are they getting?

His issue is he’s taking the cheap route to roster building because he has NIL and he’s old. His culture is not designed to force in to first year guys out of portal.

College is a lot like the NBA/NFL now. A program wants an X's and O's genius, not a big name that can draw players. Recruiting is irrelevant. Find the best game planner and game coach they can get from a mid-major, and keep the NIL faucet open.

At this point in his career, Pitino is one of the worst coaches in a major conference. Keeping him around will result in reduced contributions to the program for talent. Time to move on.

Sadly St John's needs to hope that Pitino can pull some miracle over the next couple of years. Once Pitino is gone, they'll be back to where they were from 2002-2022.

What’s the best out of conference win for the rest of the conference? St. John’s over a middling Baylor? Butler over an average Virginia?

UK, best team $22 million can buy. If you were a donor wouldn’t you be apprehensive giving for another season? Not exactly a great ROI.
I jinxed it.

Let's turn this question around. Does Mike Repole ask for his money back? Not donate again? I'm sure he's thinking, "Why did I trust Pitino with my money?"

Really? Recruiting doesn’t matter?

Bad take.

Seton Hall over NC State? They were ranked 23rd, with a current NET of 36. Virginia's NET is 21, though, so maybe Butler's win is the right answer.
Oh yeah forgot about seton hall. Not exactly a great out conference showing this year

They stink.

And a fake “good” BE season won’t change that.
It's still a little early but Is superjohn going to admit he was wrong? All summer he posted how good St. John's was going to be and Pitino could fix anything after people asked if this roster fit well together. So far they're not looking so hot. But there's still 3 more months to get their act together. It's possible.

Clear case of Pitino over estimating his system with guys that don’t match. Not all that unlike Hurley last year.

For me personally, there is nothing they can do in conference to prove to me they’re good. The BE is that unimpressive

Even if they very annoyingly swept us, it would just mean they're our kryptonite. If they can't beat anyone else of note, how can you take them seriously? They'd have to make a deep NCAA run.

I mean we lose to Seton Hall every year. And they’ve been dreadful
