Final BE OOC thread 25/26

Nova even having a shot likely starts tonight against Wisconsin. Lose there and they’ll need two wins against UConn and StJ.
Nova's out of conference schedule sucked for them this season. BYU in basically a home game for BYU, at Michigan, and Wisconsin in Milwaukee. If they scheduled better they would probably be a tournament team.

Providence sucks because of Kim English but they have a lot of talent and will play spoilers to any teams trying to make the tournament. That team with a good coach is an easy tournament team that could win a game or two.

With 37 at-large bids and maybe 2 of those coming from outside the 5 major conferences, Big East should get 4, maybe 5, bids.

People focus so much on the big East bubble teams’ problems, but all the bubble teams have warts. Otherwise they wouldn’t be bubble teams.

Guess most feel the league worth is based on 60% bids received, 40% final four and better finishes.

1985 proved you only needed 3 bids to get us 3 of the final four. Exceptional year, not duplicated again, but set the standard for league dominance since it also was all BE final and thus winner (Nova).

So while before the dance we can quibble about how many bids we get, once we are seeing Big East teams getting some success in the dance, we usually forget the number of bids anyway.

The problem is that other conference bubble teams have way more opportunities to build a resume in-conference. Non con was more important for the big east teams. It's not a lost cause for the Villanova's of the world if they lose tonight, but their margin for error is a lot smaller.

Love watching one of my favorite Big East teams (Seton Hall) play lockdown defense against one of my least favorite Big East team (Providence).

Also, very interesting that George Mason, Kim English's previous team, has a better KenPom rating than Providence.

Where did Shaheen even pull this roster? They are long armed and quick.

I think if Shaheen was coaching the Providence roster they would be better and make the NCAAT. Playing against Seton Hall and their athletic defensive muck it up style will be like going to the dentist.

English has done well recruiting, but he has to prove he can get his players to play at their level or above it. Providence has some dudes.

They’re going to keep trying to make Corey F a point guard no matter what.
I wonder if he would have been better at UConn if he had stayed. He probably wouldn't have played much his first 2 years but at least he would have been on 2 national championship teams rather than mired in mediocrity at PC.

I have a very hard time watching how this game is called. They call fouls on Wisconsin, the ticky tack stuff on the perimeter that hardly even matters. Nova's guards are blowing by and aren't impeded by the very small contact at all. But down low, Wisconsin is hammering Nova hard, with no calls.

It is just crazy to me that hard hits don't get called while touch fouls 25 feet away are called.

Lewis may be my least favorite Big East player. He is so phenomenally selfish that I don't know how anyone plays with him without losing it. In the second half alone, there have been half a dozen times where Brennan screened for Lewis, then slipped to the hoop uncovered and Lewis didn't pass it. That drove me crazy as a player and when I was coaching.

Nova has the ball with under a minute left up 3, Lewis misses the front end of one and one. Nova up 2 doesn't squeeze the defensive rebound on the ft miss and then Matt Hodge throws it right to the Badgers player for the layup

Hodge committed the cardinal sin of saving it under his own basket right to the Wisconsin player. And before that Acaden blows the front end of the 1n1.

Come on Nova, don't blow this.

What just happened in the last minute? Lewis should a 1-and-1 with no offensive rebounders, conceding the rebound to Wisconsin. Then Villanova just save the ball under their own net right to Wisconsin. You never save the ball blind back under your own net. either make sure you are passing to a teammate, or you throw it way up court.

This feels like so many Big East games this out of conference season, the Big East team loses in heartbreaking fashion at the end of the game.

He was grossly selfish. Just hogged the ball the entire shot clock for the last shot. He also heaved two 3 pointers down the stretch, when he shoots a poor %, that were really uncalled for. Then he made a nice steal, misses the front end, then hacks his man on the other end as he's driving into a big. Not a great stretch run for him. Doesn't have what I would call PG first instincts.

I had a pickup rule that I would set 2 screens and slips, and if the guard didn't pass to me on the first two, he didn't get another screen, the rest of the day.
