It was like the Cougars uniforms were trimmed in national flag blue...

It was technically the right call but it prolly should have been allowed to play on. That being said Houston was getting raped on shots all night with no calls.

Well, I thought losing to Florida was the only option. Thanks Houston! Now it’ll still be 6-5 in UConn’s favor.

Duke had the ball up 6 with 47 seconds left. It wasn't the all-time epic choke but it was still crazy. Houston never should've been there but they were always there. I could see it happening in real time and then when Duke needed to make the shot I knew it would be what it was (make or miss.) Flagg is awesome but he has flopped in his three opportunities. Scheyer still sucks.

They were up 14 with a few minutes and 9 with 1:25 or so. That’s not an epic choke?

It was definetly an epic choke job.

I would go a step further… A collapse… which is choke (2) …. There is no way on earth they should have loss that game. Reminded me a bit of the Seton Hall game this year which will haunt us for eternity.

But this was the Final Four - losing like this will be talked about for decades to come.

But the whole apocalyptic take for Duke in big scheme of things - only 1 team wins it all and there are what like over 300 teams? I don’t see the loss as totally unexpected but it’s just he way that they lost.

I am sorry Sampson trying to make it like “no one gave us a chance…” It’s like dude you weren’t a Cinderella….. It was a #1 Seed taking down a #1 Seed, Save the drama, and play in the NC Game….

Duke scored 8 points in the final 9 minutes and had a 14 point lead that seemed like it was 25. It was in every sense a colossal choke

Eternity? The Seton Hall fail was an awful, sort of sickening loss at the time, but it didn't cost us more than a seed line in the NCAA tourney. We had our shot against Florida, and couldn't put them away. I can't imagine most of us will think about the Seton Hall debacle much beyond the next couple seasons. For a while, sure, but it'll fade.

Duke, on the other hand... that's a landmark loss for them. Duke fans will remember where they were when they felt those feelings of "oh no" the way I can remember where I was for my top-five most painful sports fan losses.

Our 2014 team beats this Duke team, Flagg might have 50 but everyone else would be shutdown, Proctor would be shutdown by Boatright.

Pages 5-7 of this thread are funny to read knowing the result!
Did not watch the game. Boycott Duke games. Never want to contribute to their media ratings.

Knew this thread existed. Around midnight I checked the score. When I saw Duke lost I came to this thread to read comments. The comments from pages 3-7 are priceless. Made better by the reactions after the Duke choke. Love this Duke loss. And this thread was priceless entertainment. Should be pinned.

Just saw the last play again - aside from the miss - Flagg hooked the defender and should have been called for that also. If he had made that shot that would have been a legitimate gripe. Glad it went down the way it did.

Flagg did hook him, call was borderline any sports fan likes to see a play on in that situation. Kind of like a ref throwing a flag in the Super Bowl on a ticky tack holding call on an end of game play, which they let fly all game, wasnt the reason Duke lost though.

Duke went 10 minutes without scoring we didn’t even do that this year and they were still in comfortable position. The story will be about Duke as it always is, but give Kelvin Sampson and his guys credit, he outcoached Scheyer the entire game and had a great feel for the game as well knowing when to use his timeouts and when not to use them. Was there luck involved of course, reminded me a bit of the Pats-Falcons Super Bowl where seemingly everything had to go right for Houston and it did, putting immense game pressure on Duke.

The thread on their board comparing collapses is entertaining…especially since for many 99 stands alone!

Well, let’s be honest the pivotal call which gave Houston the opportunity to go up by a point without taking any time off the clock wasn’t a foul.

It wasn’t close to being a foul.

If that was us, we’d be lighting up this board like crazy…

But like the Seton Hall game there were so many bad plays all around the loss it’s hard to get too worked up about 1 atrocious call (We had that in our game.)

Epic Fall by Duke but IMO only the way they lost and I’m not buying the Sampson faux “We shocked the world take.”

Then you have to give Khalid crap for his “shock the world” statement too. We were a pretty good team in 1998-99 too.

It was definetly an epic choke job.
I assume he meant "wasn't the all-time choke job" as in "wasn't the single worst ever," because otherwise this was about as bad as it gets. To be up nine with two minutes left and manage lose in regulation even AFTER your opponent gifts you a free point on a technical is staggering.

I could well be wrong but I believe there was a bit more to KEA saying that than merely a run of the mill team who was a massive underdog beating a seemingly unbeatable opponent.

When Muhammad Ali beat Sonny Liston the first time (as a massive underdog who should not have been much of an underdog) he exclaimed "I shocked the world!" a few times. I imagine that Ali was a supreme heroic figure in KEA's eyes and he in part was emulating him when he said it (again, I could be wrong on this).

Everyone within that basketball team fully believed they could go toe to toe with that Duke team and if they played their game, come out on top. About eight or nine years after that game I brought up to JC his comments "maybe they beat us 99 times out of 100 but we only had to win one game" as I felt we'd beat them more times than they'd beat us. He told me "if you have a good line you use it". He didn't mind playing up to the general public but he also knew it wasn't an upset in any way, shape or form.
